Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Well done, @sweetgingercat
To avoid a repeat of the ridiculous on the spot marching of yesterday, I've just got back from a 2 hour walk with the dogs - weirdly, it took less time to reach my target walking on the spot Hmm.
DS finished off the leftovers in the night so at least I can forget about that now Grin

Greetings all - I've spent the last 4 days snowed in! Thankfully thawing now but RUINOUS for my waistline with wine and snacks a plenty... I'm almost looking forward to tomorrow's fast day! B2b tomorrow and Tuesday, 3rd fd Thursday and genuinely considering making Wednesday a mini... we'll see what the damage is tomorrow morning on the scales 😆

Hello Fasters - id like to rejoin please ! Gave up last September following a scary health diagnosis but am now fit(ish) again and would like to rejoin. I’m following a fibre rich, low fat, anti inflammatory and plant based diet (out go the daily diet bars and 3 cans of Diet Coke) and now fast weekly for 48 hours (water & broth fast) in prep for weekly chemo sessions as I think it protects the healthy cells whilst letting chemo soak up any sneaky buggery cancel cells that may have evaded surgery. I’m nearly finished chemo and preparing for “normal” life again but will be sticking to the weekly fast. I used to REALLY STRUGGLE with fasting and now it’s become something I almost look forward too (well the break-fast part is the best really!). I’m 5”3 and down from 64 ish kilos to 54 which is healthy bmi for my frame and I’d like to maintain now. Have started going to gym again and want to start lifting weights soon. Any other weight lifters here ?

harriethoyle · 13/03/2023 07:57

Welcome back @incognitodorrito ! Really pleased your health is in a better place, although it sounds like you've been through the mill. You can be our maintenance poster girl. I'm still losing and gaining the same 2 kilos...!!

B2B FD today and tomorrow - who's with me? @absolutelyknackeredcow @EatYourFive @sweetgingercat ?

Whilst I'm on the subject of health - can anyone recommend a youtube work out? I have a history of dementia in my family which I am desperate to avoid! and I've read several studies recently saying that dementia is less common in those who regularly exercise. My work schedule is punishing (out of the house by 7am and working from then until I return at 6pm) and by the time I have sorted dogs, supper, elderly DF, less elderly DH(!) I just have neither the time or the inclincation to go the gym or to an exercise class.

So yesterday I was scrolling through youtube and did a couple of Chloe Ting workouts - c. 25 minutes, but enough to get the heart rate up. Can anyone recommend any others? I think the plan is to try and do three a week which should be doable if I'm just exercising in the lounge...

Morning @harriethoyle. I'm in for a single and then b2b wed/ Thurs

sweetgingercat · 13/03/2023 08:08

Yes I’m with you @harriethoyle and welcome back @incognitodorrito I’m sorry to hear your life has been tough but great to hear you’re coming through to the other side…

Hohoholdthesherry · 13/03/2023 08:32

Fast day today for me, possibly back to back - but that will probably depend on whether I get good news at my hospital appointment, or whether my hand needs an operation - I'm still an emotional eater!

@harriethoyle I use the Fitness Blender videos, as they're not too difficult (to follow, some of them are very difficult to do) and loads of choice from short to long. And I like to put on my own music. They're on Youtube, but I usually go to their website as you can search by time, difficulty etc. If no one's at home I sometimes do the Caleb Marshall dance workouts (wouldn't one anyone to see me doing those ...)

Hohoholdthesherry · 13/03/2023 08:33

@incognitodorrito Sorry it's been a difficult time for you.

For weights, I have a couple kettlebells and (as I said above) Fitness Blender for weights.

harriethoyle · 13/03/2023 08:38

Fitness Blender looks great @Hohoholdthesherry - thanks!

Good morning, also here for my weekly B2B.

Nice to have you back @incognitodorrito, sounds like you have been through a lot in recent months!

@harriethoyle I'm the same as you, keep losing and gaining the same 2 kg so should also look into upping my exercise routine. Have been on a lookout for a good app but also interested in YouTube videos. I also have dementia in my family on my mum's side so another reason to try and stay fit.

Good luck today everyone, let's do this!

harriethoyle · 13/03/2023 13:14

@EatYourFive www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2023/mar/11/exercise-avoid-bangs-and-invent-fairy-stories-henry-marshs-guide-to-keeping-brains-healthy

This was the article which really made me commit to regular exercise - I've seen several studies but this article is very interesting and powerful I thought

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 13/03/2023 18:19

That's interesting @harriethoyle. I really have to start making more of an effort to properly fit in some exercise in my daily routine. I'm the same as you - work full time, get home at 6 pm, have to sort our dinner, feed cats and clean up and so on, with the occasional work trip thrown in, so really no time for gym or anything. At the moment my main form of exercise is my walk to work, about 30 minutes each way, but that's not really enough. I also WFH some days and don't exercise at all those days. I do some running but have been coming up with excuses not to run since around October..

Anyway, today was a bit challenging and I have been snacking a lot, including a packet of crisps. Therefore no room for dinner now.🙄 Kitchen closed at 650.

harriethoyle · 13/03/2023 18:51

650 great for a b2b @EatYourFive !

Kitchen closing here 661. Courgetti planned for tomorrow 😁

There is also a great article on bbc website on Michael Mosley lifting weights
Well done the Monday fasters
I'm closed at 550

EatYourFive · 13/03/2023 20:22

Well done @absolutelyknackeredcow!
Will have to look up the article. I am hoping to make some space in our basement for a little gym, although annoyingly DH is eyeing that exact same space for a drum kit, I can see some trouble ahead...🙃

TeaRose29 · 13/03/2023 20:41

Hello @incognitodorrito , sorry to hear you have been so unwell. I’ve been doing weights all my life - long before it was a thing for women to do them! Great for our bones. I would recommend a mixture of fixed and free weights in the gym, and to have a couple of sessions with a personal trainer to make sure your technique is correct - it’s quite precise, and you can cause yourself problems if you do it wrong.

Hohoholdthesherry · 13/03/2023 22:54

Done on just over my personal goal for a B2B of 800. So not too unhappy with - I just hope I can sleep despite the storm.

sweetgingercat · 13/03/2023 23:07

Kitchen closed at 605 here. I’m happy with that. And exercise is great, I started swimming more I. The summer and have been going about twice a week since then (except for when it’s been really cold because I’ve been a bit of a wuss) Makes me and my body feel completely different… we’ll done everyone! See you back here tomorrow for another!

harriethoyle · 14/03/2023 07:42

Morning campers- who's with me today? I think @sweetgingercat @EatYourFive @Hohoholdthesherry are... @absolutelyknackeredcow are you in the Tuesday gang? 💪

OP posts:
Hohoholdthesherry · 14/03/2023 08:09

Yes, I'm in ... unless I get not great news at my hospital appointment this morning - just a torn tendon in my finger, but it might need operating. I've always been an emotional eater, so I'm not going to put pressure on myself to fast, only to end up overdoing things this evening.

So I'll see how it goes!

Good luck to all the Tuesday gang 💪

harriethoyle · 14/03/2023 08:37

Good luck @Hohoholdthesherry hope your appointment goes well

Hohoholdthesherry · 14/03/2023 11:30

sweetgingercat · 14/03/2023 11:37

I’m in the Tuesday gang! There’s a slice of fish in the kitchen with my name on it! Good luck everyone!

EatYourFive · 14/03/2023 12:05

Hello I'm also in the Tuesday gang! In the office today so should be easier, no snacks around so will actually get to have dinner tonight!
