Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

If I can manage on a tin of soup for the rest of the day, I might just sneak in within the calorie allowance.

sweetgingercat · 07/03/2023 08:27

Yes I’m in! Wow there are quite a few of us today! Botti, when you feel dizzy do you take any salted water? That can be a good cure for dizziness when fasting!

SydneyCarton · 07/03/2023 09:55

Have taken a break for a bit as not in the office at the moment - doing 16:8 today, so will be eating around 1-ish, and probably again on Thursday. Am planning to run Wednesday and Friday mornings before work, so I will need a bit of fuel to do that.

As I suspected giving up booze and crisps for Lent hasn't resulted in any significant weight loss as I have just been overdoing it with the biscuits instead 😬DP has given them up so there are plenty around!

harriethoyle · 07/03/2023 12:44

That's exactly my problem @SydneyCarton - I give up one vice, I find another! At least a gin is only 52 cals per measure...!!

@EatYourFive , my daughter (aged 22) is using an app called Beyond for a weights workout etc, which she is enjoying. Costs (me 😬) about £7 a month.

I try to fast Mondays and Wednesdays, but couldn't do yesterday as it was my husband's birthday. Also there was rather a lot of celebration food at the weekend, but it doesn't seem to have done too much damage, as I was 10.4 this morning (so half a pound off). Played tennis for 21/2 hours today and haven't eaten much. Will try to have a fast day tomorrow.

Well done everyone who is slogging it out today!

harriethoyle · 07/03/2023 18:46

Kitchen closing on 598, making 1196 for the b2b. Happy with that!

How did my fellow fasters do?

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 07/03/2023 18:52

Thank you @TeaRose29, will check it out!

Kitchen closing at 550, bringing the two day total to just over 1000, pleased with that. Now just will have to find the motivation to do some exercise, was planning a lunch time run tomorrow but it looks like it might snow, that's enough to put me off!

sweetgingercat · 07/03/2023 21:19

Well done everybody! B2b is definitely on my agenda from now on!

I haven't finished my day yet (I'm always a late eater) but I'm on 242 so far (after a nice avocado salad for lunch) and am not hungry at all due I think to eating almost nly chicken and fish yesterday.

I was intending to swim tomorrow in our local outdoor heated pool (we are so lucky!). I've never swum in snow before so I might give it a go!

mumlikeaboss · 08/03/2023 06:59

Wow, I missed all the activity on here at the beginning of the week! Well done everyone 👏🏻

I've had a shit show of a few days and haven't managed any fasts for over a week... 🙄 So I'm settling in for one today. Anyone else on a Wednesday fast...?

Have stress-eaten badly recently and am feeling fat and discouraged!!! 😩

mumlikeaboss · 08/03/2023 07:00

@sweetgingercat outdoor swimming 😍😍 you lucky thing, do let us know how it goes in the snow 🌨!!

harriethoyle · 08/03/2023 11:33

I bought biscuits for today's work lunch and can't stop dipping into them...!! Am going to undo all yesterday's good work!

harriethoyle · 09/03/2023 09:14

I am snowed in and I have decided not to fast today. I would just fail and then be cross. It's too cold!

OP posts:
Hohoholdthesherry · 09/03/2023 11:29

@harriethoyle very fair!

I've been on a 10-day hiatus while I went to help out my mum, who's broken her wrist, so am back fasting today. Anyone with me?

No snow here and it's fairly mild, so going to go for a walk at lunchtime to make sure I get a decent break (I often end up working through lunch on fast days, which isn't great).

sweetgingercat · 10/03/2023 00:52

I didn't fast today either. My partner who was away working this week suddenly turned up on Wednesday evening and said he had Thursday off, so I'm going to do a Friday fast tomorrow. @harriethoyle are you with me? Anyone else?

@mumlikeaboss we had about 10 minutes of snow here, so no swimming in snow yet!

Hohoholdthesherry · 10/03/2023 09:15

@sweetgingercat me again today!

Yesterday was a mini fast as DH brought pizza home with him. He's very supportive of fasting, I'd just forgotten to tell him I was doing it. But I'm happy enough with that, as still get the benefits from a 24 hour fast and still a lot fewer calories than if I'd not fasted before the pizza.

I find it a bit harder to fast after a big meal like that, but I will have half a stock cube as "tea" in the afternoon, which should help. No snow here - torrential rain, so I think it will have to be the exercise bike at lunch, rather than a walk.

harriethoyle · 10/03/2023 09:17

@sweetgingercat I hate a Friday fast at the best of times. but I've woken up to over a foot of snow and unable to get out to work or to see DH and DSD this weekend who are away and who I was supposed to be joining... so the only thing I'll be trying to do is not drink wine before lunchtime!!

OP posts:
Bottl · 10/03/2023 10:18

Morning everyone,
Sorry to hear the snow has scuppered your plans @harriethoyle
I'm fasting today and trying out an alternative - having breakfast and a light lunch then nothing for the rest of the day. Will see how that goes.

TeaRose29 · 10/03/2023 11:10

Not fasting today (although I will just eat lightly during the day) as we are going to a lovely French restaurant tonight to celebrate DH's birthday (again 😬). I haven't fasted this week, as I've had a lot of emotional challenges and just too much on my plate (no pun intended). Anyway, next week is looking good - planning to do a B2B on Sunday and Monday, and possibly Wednesday.

Snow now coming down heavily!

sweetgingercat · 10/03/2023 16:25

S

sweetgingercat · 10/03/2023 16:27

@Bottl just the two of us… I also had some fish earlier, to stave off any hunger and I’ll have my normal salad later today. I think it works well this way.

We can do it!

Hohoholdthesherry · 10/03/2023 19:34

Finished with homemade beans (chopped tomatoes, beans, sweetcorn and spices) topped with an egg, followed by a pear and some Greek yoghurt.

Happy with that!

Bottl · 10/03/2023 19:46

@sweetgingercat how are you getting on?

@Hohoholdthesherry that sounds delish!!!

DS has just tortured me with the cooking smells of his dinner - chicken and chorizo pasta. It smells absolutely amazing and when I sneaked into the kitchen to snaffle some, discovered he'd loaded it with chilli Hmm. I have the most ridiculously sensitive tastebuds and can't bear any spice at all so I suppose he did me a favour because I can't eat it. It still smells amazing though.

Hohoholdthesherry · 10/03/2023 20:36

@Bottl yikes, chorizo or bacon cooking would break me 😅

Bottl · 10/03/2023 22:45

The leftovers are taunting me Grin

We've signed up, through DS' work, to a charity daily step challenge. For some reason probably because I've spent much of today on my arse my step count was on 1,500 at 8pm so have spent a considerable amount of time walking on the spot watching tv. I did wonder if I could use the excess steps I've gained over the last 10 days or maybe try and double up tomorrow but decided that probably isn't in the spirit of it. I've already planned a long walk with the dogs in the morning to get the steps done as early as possible!!

sweetgingercat · 11/03/2023 08:37

Hi @Bottl loved the image of you marching on the spot in front of the TV!

Kitchen closed on 570 and I swam 20 lengths in the evening. It was the first time I exercised on a fast day and I really enjoyed it.

Having teenage boys round the house does not help! Mine had a KFC lat night and I had a small bite of his burger because it smelled so delicious😎
