Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

I had too much on yesterday, so am doing it today. So far only had Greek yogurt with a scoop of protein powder - around 350 calories. Planning on tinned tuna with light mayo for dinner. Boring but hey-ho.

Morning - i am on a Friday fast today which is my third of the week. I am in pre event mode and have lots on in the next few weeks which means I have to get them when I can.

Hi @absolutelyknackeredcow I am also on a Friday fast. Also the third this week. I find Fridays really difficult… but I’m hoping that with the promise of a delicious salad tonight, I’ll make it through. Good luck! We can do it!

We certainly can! I’ve had 80gms of smoked salmon and a few cups of tea! I’m feeling great. I’m not even challenged by the pack of chocolate biscuits my son has thoughtlessly left on the table! So far so good! How about you?

I am kitchen closed on 550 and pretty happy with that especially as I hate a Friday fast
I am back on Monday to do a 36 hour one ( I have got a dinner Tues eve ) and will need to do Friday again 🥲

Stuck to arounnd 800 calories on Thursday and Friday. Found Thursday really tough, felt v hungry and a bit light-headed. Food too carby I think. Yesterday I had yogurt with extra protein powder at around midday, and that kept me going fine until dinner at 7.30.

Half a pound off: now 10.3 1/2. Pleased with that.

Well done Tea Rose! I also find it easier to avoid carbs on fast days and if I avoid carbs the night before a fast day I always feel less hungry the following day!

I'm trying to make myself add in some exercise to get off my plateau. Fasting today and went for an hour long walk. Thought I was going to be sick after one steep hill, but it passed!

Ooh, a pound off today, am definitely going to try to keep up my exercise. Might also make me less likely to eat cake on my up days.

Good morning @harriethoyle! I will be joining you today for day 1 B2B. Took a break from fasting last week as I had to travel to Asia for work and I can't fast when travelling, especially with jetlag.
Luckily haven't got that much catching up to do, certainly not like after a holiday!

I am joining today - i am doing 2.5 this week
Have got a dinner out tomorrow so doing a 40 hour fast (so today and until midday tomorrow )
Then bloody Friday which I hate.
Not seeing much progress on the scales atm
I have also upped my exercise - mainly weights

@absolutelyknackeredcow same here, have hit a plaeteau. Really need to up my game and get back to running (keep coming up with excuses!) and should also do some weights and such. I don't have time for gym though so if anyone knows a good app for anaerobic stuff please let me know, happy to pay for some sort of subscription too if it is actually good.

Morning!
I'm joining you all for a Monday FD. I totally overindulged yesterday and felt awful so looking forward to undoing some of that today.
Also, ds has signed me up to a 10k steps a day challenge which has mostly been ok so far (except for having to drag myself out at 9pm last night to finish off the last 3,000) so it'll be interesting to see if this affects the number on the scales.
