Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Kitchen closing on 591 @SydneyCarton @Hohoholdthesherry how did you both get on?

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 22/02/2023 21:02

699 for me, sushi always has more calories than I expect. Watching Stacey sort people’s lives out to distract me for the next hour, then off to bed. Crumpets for breakfast!

Hohoholdthesherry · 22/02/2023 21:39

Finished up on around 600 - DH cooked and wasn't quite sure how much oil he used on the finish, but it's a win for me!

Bottl · 23/02/2023 07:36

Morning!
Thursday FD for me this week - DS has a day off work tomorrow and we're going out for lunch so switching FD to today.
I've got a pot of minestrone soup for lunch and a bag of stir fri mix for dinner...just need to remember to take some chicken out of the freezer to go with it!!

mumlikeaboss · 23/02/2023 12:34

Have a good FD @Bottl

Looks like I'm only getting one FD this week, ended up having lunch out today, waaaaaay over 500 cals and probably over 1000 too... Will try to keep it to one meal.

Busy weekend with lots of socialising, so I'll see you guys next Monday!! 😁

Bottl · 23/02/2023 21:27

Enjoy your busy weekend, @mumlikeaboss !!

My FD has been a bit of a flop. I wasn't off to a good start when I had my emergency mocha sachet at 11am. Ended up making myself an egg Mayo sandwich for lunch and then before I could stop myself, stuffed a flapjack into my gob Hmm
However, that was at 3pm so I've decided to ditch the stir fry dinner and am putting myself to bed shortly.

mumlikeaboss · 23/02/2023 22:59

Good damage limitation @bottl :) At least that's a nice short window.

I'm pretty chuffed because despite a hugely calorific lunch, I had a 2-hour window and even did a load of baking this evening without tasting any 😇

absolutelyknackeredcow · 27/02/2023 08:01

Any one joining for a b2b?
Now we are almost in to March I am on healthy eating mode as I have a big event at the start of April.
Plan is 2 to 3 fasts a week, tracked calories on non fast days and easier weekends. Lots of veg and water and less carbs and sugars .
I am aiming for 3lbs off my usual target weight (which I get to most weeks after b2b) so do need to rein it back on NFDS

harriethoyle · 27/02/2023 09:17

I'm with you @absolutelyknackeredcow also on a b2b. March is definitely more settled for me in terms of limited socialising and a couple of weeks where I can fit 3 fasts in. My birthday is on Thursday and we're away for a long weekend to celebrate but from next week I've got my game face on until Easter!

Bottl · 27/02/2023 13:09

I'm fasting today. Not sure I could manage a b2b on my busy work days but will give it some thought.

sweetgingercat · 27/02/2023 13:21

I’m also on a mission. I’m going skiing in fuve weeks and I want to be down a size. I’ll be doing 3 fasts a week, Mon, wed and Fri and swimming two or three days too. Hopefully I’ll join you guys on a B2B in a couple of weeks so I can drop Friday fasts! Guys… we can do it!

Also I did wonder whether it might be fun/helpful if people post a pic of their fast day meals. I am always on the lookout for ideas! No shaming or calories, just a pic and a description of what’s in it? Anyone interested?

Good luck today everybody!

harriethoyle · 27/02/2023 14:12

@sweetgingercat beware - I always put weight ON skiing! It's the hearty food and the apres ski which does it!!

No photo because I've eaten it but today's lunch was my usual FD: wholemeal thin filled with 1.5 tsp of mayonnaise and 1/2 tin of tuna. 215 calories and enough fat that I don't tend to feel ravenous until c.6.30pm most days. I did soup for a FD lunch last week and nearly passed out by 5pm!!

Tonight will be breaded fish with 1/2 tin of baked beans. Excellent winter stodge but only c. 480 cals or so. Will be 703 for the day which is OK for b2b.

OP posts:
Bottl · 27/02/2023 16:46

@sweetgingercat I'd love to see pics of FD meals. Mine are usually really boring because I haven't been very organised Blush
@harriethoyle I May have mentioned before but I often have a tin of minestrone soup on a FD. It's about 160cals for the whole tin (depending on which brand) and is pretty good at stopping me reaching for anything else before teatime!!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 27/02/2023 18:10

Hurrah @harriethoyle @sweetgingercat - Lots of us making March a healthy one
One miso noodle soup and three cups of tea with milk so far
I will be having 2 boiled eggs and skinny toast for tea with lab options and rich tea
That takes me to about 560

harriethoyle · 27/02/2023 18:53

Kitchen closed here on 670. Tuna thin and beef stew tomorrow for a similar amount I'd guess...

Yay we’ll done @harriethoyle and @absolutelyknackeredcow It’s fantastic when we can keep each other strong! I’ve had a boiled egg, kimchi and miso soup so far. Am about to prepare my usual smoked salmon and salad supper which will keep me under 500 for today!

sweetgingercat · 27/02/2023 20:03

What are lab options @absolutelyknackeredcow ?

absolutelyknackeredcow · 27/02/2023 20:23

Hahahah - meant to say an options
Options hot choc - my go to when I need something sweet

mumlikeaboss · 27/02/2023 22:48

Well done everyone who fasted today! I did not, planned a NFD but it turned into a major stress binge 🙈

So looking forward to tomorrow's FD now... And will do another on Thursday or Friday. 🤞🏻

Badlifeday · 28/02/2023 06:23

So enjoying my post-fast breakfast this morning.

harriethoyle · 28/02/2023 07:47

I had the worst night's sleep ever 🙈 and was ravenous this morning so I've had to have à piece of toast and make my peace with today being a mini rather than a true fd. Still aiming for 700 cals but won't have that 18 hour stretch without eating...

I'm gaining and losing the same two kilos each week. Bring on next week when I can fast three times!

OP posts:
mumlikeaboss · 28/02/2023 17:46

@harriethoyle yeah I'm struggling this week too... Exhausted and don't feel 100% 😪😪 Not pushing a fast while I feel like this.

TeaRose29 · 28/02/2023 17:49

Hello, may I join? I’m trying to get a few pounds off - 5’6” and currently 10st 4, down from 10.10 1/2 six weeks ago. Would like to be around 9st 6 (quite small frame). Didn’t think IF would be for me, as I’m very prone to hypoglycaemia, but I’ve been trying it and it has been working surprisingly well. (I sort of fell into it inadvertently- basically doing Dukan diet and some days just too sick of protein to bother to eat!). I’ve only lost a pound a week on average, but believe me, this is success for me! Plus, I was stuck for ages then in the last couple of weeks, when I’ve had proper fast days, is when it’s dropped off. Lowest I’ve been for ages, and excited to see where I can get to!

sweetgingercat · 01/03/2023 12:46

Welcome Tearose! This is a great group and very motivating!

Anyone joining me in a fast today?
