Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Hello all - bit of late post but day 1 b2b
600 ish
Well done everyone

Bottl · 20/02/2023 19:55

Well done for getting so far into the day without caving @beststepforward !! What had you planned for dinner?

I had scrambled egg around 4pm but it's giving me reflux. Perhaps that's why I want to cave in! Also hearing the devastating news of the earthquake has made me want to comfort eat

Hohoholdthesherry · 20/02/2023 21:46

Evening, got through to 24 hours fasted and had my evening meal - 800 calories but that is what I'm aiming at for the moment, as I have been very run down since breaking my hand so wanted just to ease into it. Omelette and leftover chilli without carne (beans and lentils). Was delicious! Next fast Friday

mumlikeaboss · 21/02/2023 09:24

I'm guessing not many fasters today... You all did it yesterday! 😁

I said I'd try for a FD today but I have a sneaking suspicion it ain't going to happen 🙈 Woken up SO grumpy and hungry and full of several pounds of TOTM bloat 😭

Grr got so much to do today, too.

EatYourFive · 21/02/2023 09:43

@mumlikeaboss I am fasting today, even made the kids some pancakes for breakfast and didn't have any myself. C'mon join me, let's do this! 😁

harriethoyle · 21/02/2023 09:57

@EatYourFive will keep you on the straight and narrow @mumlikeaboss !!

I'm back tomorrow, good luck both

OP posts:
mumlikeaboss · 21/02/2023 10:09

Aw thanks both! I need a couple of drill sergeants 🤣

Have just had herbal tea so far, will keep going as long as I can...!!

EatYourFive · 21/02/2023 10:56

Thanks @harriethoyle!
@mumlikeaboss it's almost midday already, you can manage until lunch time and herbal tea can keep you going until dinner time! Maybe get something nice for breakfast tomorrow (I'm gonna buy some nice bread later) as a reward to keep you focused.

mumlikeaboss · 21/02/2023 11:53

Right. I'm still hanging on. Fingers crossed 🤞🏻

EatYourFive · 21/02/2023 14:12

Good work @mumlikeaboss! We can do this, just a few more hours until dinner time and an early night - well for me anyway, I tend to go to bed early on FDs to avoid any temptations!

mumlikeaboss · 21/02/2023 17:48

@EatYourFive thanks for your motivation! 🥰 I think I'll make it now.

I had 5-600 cals around 2/3pm because I hit the bottom, was exhausted and hungry and couldn't concentrate!! 😱 So had some corned beef, a nectarine, a handful of tortilla chips and a hot choc!! Odd assortment but it really kick-started me again and I had a really productive few hours after that, thank goodness.

Might get a bit peckish later but think I'll be fine because I can head to bed early 😁

Hope your FD has gone well too 🤗

Bottl · 21/02/2023 17:49

Hope you're both clinging on to your FD...nearly tea time!!!

Whilst I've avoided snacking today, my lunch went a bit pair-shaped so am considering soup for tea for a bit of damage limitation!! And maybe a mini-FD tomorrow to keep things under control.

Bottl · 21/02/2023 17:51

Cross post! This quite often happens to me and I can usually happily skip having an evening meal and be in bed nice and early to avoid any further temptation!!

EatYourFive · 21/02/2023 18:46

Yay pleased to hear you still hanging on @mumlikeaboss, almost bedtime now!! @Bottl I sometimes just have a bit of yogurt, boiled egg or something else small at dinner time if I have exceeded my calories earlier in the day.
I am about to have some fishcakes and sweet potato (air fryed) for dinner, total calories for the day should come to <650.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 21/02/2023 19:19

Well done everyone some fantastic fasts here
I'm kitchen closed on about 650 on day 2
Happy with that

mumlikeaboss · 21/02/2023 20:43

Yum @EatYourFive 🤤 and well done @absolutelyknackeredcow

@Bottl I quite often do a lunchtime window when I do OMAD, but I thought it would be much harder with the fewer calories... Surprised that it wasn't really! I feel fine!

Thanks for everyone's moral support 😘 looking forward to croissants for brunch tomorrow 😍

Seer · 22/02/2023 00:12

May I join please?

I naturally and easily fast on a 16:8 pattern most days (basically just don't eat breakfast) but feel I'd benefit from going back to 5:2 which felt pretty good for me years ago.

I've done a couple of "fasting" days this week: no breakfast, had a cup of vegetable boillon for lunch and then a dinner as usual. A bit like OMAD. I suspect I had around 600-800 cals but I didn't calculate. I was surprisingly not especially hungry come dinnertime.

My intention is a combination of health and weight maintenance (I'm also happy to lose a bit of weight).

Badlifeday · 22/02/2023 06:43

I normally post on fast days to keep my morale up but I think I need to focus more on the non-fast days, as those are when I'm failing and just eating mindlessly throughout the day!

harriethoyle · 22/02/2023 08:17

Anyone with me today?

@Badlifeday do you meal plan, even roughly, for NFD? If I don't, I find things go pear shaped...

Excellent fasting @absolutelyknackeredcow @EatYourFive @mumlikeaboss 👍

I have picked up a horrid cold, so am not fasting this week. Feeling annoyed.. but it’s life, I guess. Good luck everyone!

Hohoholdthesherry · 22/02/2023 08:42

@sweetgingercat I hope you feel better soon!

Anyone fasting today? Mine would have been tomorrow, but I have a hospital appointment and I usually end up hanging around in the café for a bit so I think it'll be too much temptation!

I originally thought I'd do Friday, but I don't think I've ever done a proper fast on a Friday - it usually turns into a mini fast when we pick up takeaway 😏Today I am at work til 1, a bouillon, then going for a walk before it rains, so hopefully that will take me through to 4-ish and then worse comes to worse I can eat then!

Hohoholdthesherry · 22/02/2023 08:43

@harriethoyle oops, missed your post - yes, me, I'm with you😉

harriethoyle · 22/02/2023 08:51

@Hohoholdthesherry if it's any consolation, I have NEVER managed a Friday fast. The very thought is anathema to me... Friday is wine day!

Glad it's not just me 😆

SydneyCarton · 22/02/2023 14:03

I'm in the office today so getting a FD in after letting it all go hang during half term last week. Unusually I'm also in on Friday so will do another FD then - Friday is usually a bit of an end-of-the-week blowout after 6pm, but we're in Lent now which for me means no booze and no crisps, so not much of a blowout! Two of the DC have a party on Friday evening which takes me out of the house from 9-ish to 7-ish, so if I can resist the leftover chicken nuggets and chips I should be OK
