Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Still struggling here, today is hard work for some reason. Think I will go over 500 today. This is one of the reasons why I prefer B2B, the extra calories make such a difference!

sweetgingercat · 15/02/2023 15:24

I’m fasting today and also finding it hard because I’ve got three hungry teenagers here and cooking their food and not swiping a bit required loads of willpower at lunch. I managed with a salad! Roll on end of half term!

EatYourFive · 15/02/2023 15:28

I totally agree @sweetgingercat! Working from home and being constantly interrupted by kids wanting snacks/drink/lunch makes it so much harder! But couldn't take the time off as have to save my holidays for a big three week break in August!

EatYourFive · 16/02/2023 06:17

How did you get on yesterday? I finished slightly high for a single fast, 550. Wondering whether to do another day today but still have a cold so probably not really up for it. So it's two single FDs for this week.

harriethoyle · 16/02/2023 09:19

I finished on 608 @EatYourFive - back to my usual weight which I will yo yo up and down to on 2FD a week -which unfortunately is all I can do next week as well. Going to try and work in IF on Thurs-Sun to see if that helps. I don't think I can do three in a row and that's my only option next week, sadly.

mumlikeaboss · 16/02/2023 10:24

Mine ended up a mini fast again because DH cracked open pizza & garlic bread for dinner 🙈🙈

I am just rubbish at doing proper fasts in the 2nd half of my cycle... But hey, at least I'm trying 😁 and I got to nearly 6pm before eating anything at all 😇

I'm bouncing between 238-241 for the last week or so but it hasn't shot up higher than that so fingers crossed my FD attempts are holding it steadier than usual 🤞🏻

sweetgingercat · 16/02/2023 11:25

Just managed to squeak through yesterday by eating my salad at about 2pm instead of later which kept me going through the evening with the help of a very small banana.

Bottl · 17/02/2023 08:20

Checking in for my Friday FD. Got a bit of a tricky day ahead with lots of to-ing and fro-ing which always stresses me out but I'm hoping that'll distract me from my usual stuffing my face to get me through it Grin

Bottl · 18/02/2023 05:41

Yesterday wasn't the greatest fast but I had a very short night's sleep which is usually what happens when I've had a successful one so that's kinda good Grin

mumlikeaboss · 18/02/2023 21:20

@bottl well done 👍🏻 I nearly joined you for a Friday FD but fell into a KFC shop by mistake at lunchtime...

I was 236lbs this morning, which is the low end of my yoyo! Amazing for nearly TOTM.

Bottl · 19/02/2023 22:56

@mumlikeaboss - damn that sabotaging KFC Grin

I'm checking in ahead of tomorrow's FD.

Sorted through some clothes today and I have so many lovey things that I could wear when I was 2 1/2 stone lighter. My half hearted attitude needs to improve if I want to be in those clothes any time this year!! Being disorganised is my biggest downfall so I've made an effort to be prepared for tomorrow - leftover chicken, grains and salad for lunch and a small jacket potato with tuna for tea.

Anyone joining me tomorrow?

mumlikeaboss · 20/02/2023 07:20

Sounds good @Bottl

I'm aiming for Tuesday and Thursday this week as they're my busiest days.

harriethoyle · 20/02/2023 09:33

I'm with you @Bottl today and Weds and a mini on Thursday

OP posts:
Hohoholdthesherry · 20/02/2023 10:16

I thought I'd hop on here as I need the encouragement/moral support.

I'd lost 5 kg (of 15 kg) before Christmas, but it all went back on mid-January when I broke my hand. The first couple of weeks my only real entertainment was eating and watching TV ...

Trying to do 5:2 and then mixing up the rest of the week with some 18:6 and some days three meals a day, which is what has always worked the best for me. I need to get at 5 kg off in four weeks, when I should have the OK to ride my horse again.

Bottl · 20/02/2023 11:05

@mumlikeaboss i'll join you on Thursday - I have to pick quieter days because busy ones stress me out and I reach for food Blush

@harriethoyle good luck today. What do you do on a mini? Wondering if I should try and fit one on between today and Thursday but will be out on day trips with the children tomorrow/Weds so may not be the easiest days to make good choices!

@Hohoholdthesherry ouch, sounds painful!! Hope it's healing well. And good luck getting back into 5:2!!

mumlikeaboss · 20/02/2023 11:20

@Hohoholdthesherry mixing it up is a great plan 🤗 it's always good to be flexible and means it'll fit round your life better too.

@Bottl haha I have to do busy days so I haven't got time to eat!! If I have a quiet day, I will likely end up reading a book and mindlessly snacking 🙈🙈

Bottl · 20/02/2023 11:26

@mumlikeaboss which I guess is why this WOL works for so many!! Decluttering the kitchen probably wasn't my wisest move this morning but I have cleared a ton of mismatched plastic pots into the recycling - I just don't understand where all the missing ones disappear to.

mumlikeaboss · 20/02/2023 11:55

Ooh, love me a good decluttering session 🤩

Yes, what is it with plastic tubs/lids?! They dissolve into thin air, I swear!

harriethoyle · 20/02/2023 13:44

@Bottl how are you getting on? I am hungry but busy and VERY grumpy...!!

For a mini I try and stay under 1000 cals and usually achieve that by skipping breakfast and having something like soup or something light for tea; if tea stays under 500 cals I am usually OK, because my go to lunch on 80% of work days (FD and NFD) is 215 cals tuna sandwich. Also have to avoid booze which is something I try and do on week days but is more difficult when I'm travelling and am in the airport lounge, which is generally every other week...

DH just messaged to say he's made soup out of fridge leftovers so am hoping I can take advantage of that on Weds if I can find a sealed tub that won't leak in my work bag!

OP posts:
Bottl · 20/02/2023 14:27

@harriethoyle Not too bad, thanks. I'm also very grumpy but have been for days so can't really blame it on fasting. Could do with a little nanna nap to take the edge off Grin
Thanks for sharing what you do for a mini...sounds like something I could fit into a day out.
Hope the rest of your day goes to plan

@mumlikeaboss I'm rubbish at decluttering!! I try but there's just too much stuff

harriethoyle · 20/02/2023 18:43

Kitchen closed here on 513. How did you get on @Bottl ? Welcome @Hohoholdthesherry sounds like you've got a good plan in place. That 5kg will come off in a month with a bit of perseverance 🤞

OP posts:
Bottl · 20/02/2023 18:55

Well done @harriethoyle !!

I've just had my chicken and rice leftovers - there was way less than I remember putting in the fridge Hmm

Have been sleeping on and off all afternoon and woken with a headache so going to down a pint of water and then have some jelly for a bit of a sugar hit.

beststepforward · 20/02/2023 19:48

Anyone around? Back on fasting today after too too long. Feel like caving in and ordering a pizza but I need to do this! I've put the weight back on that I lost before Blush

Bottl · 20/02/2023 19:55

Well done for getting so far into the day without caving @beststepforward !! What had you planned for dinner?

EatYourFive · 20/02/2023 20:19

Good evening, nice to see so many of us here today! I'm fasting as well, kitchen closing at around 500, another FD tomorrow. Dinner was some leftover cottage pie - hopefully I overestimated the calories rather than underestimate them, find it tricky to guesstimate how many calories there are in something like that.
