Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Hello, hope it's ok to join. I'm 9 months post partum and weigh as much as I did at 4 weeks post partum after having the best of intentions and yo-yoing. But I'm feeling pretty rubbish about it all, so I'm ready to try something new. I started walking more at the beginning of the month, but it's not made much of a difference to the scales so I obviously need to change my diet too. So the plan is to do a combination of 16:8 and 5:2.
Here we go, day 1 starting with a fast day.

Badlifeday · 13/02/2023 09:57

Best of luck! Though I'd go very easy on yourself if you have a young baby, you've already a lot on your plate!
I find I've more energy on fasting days, I get through a lot (probably as I'm not stopping to eat!) though by evening time I'm usually ready for the day to be over and for tomorrow's breakfast.

mumlikeaboss · 13/02/2023 10:02

I'm attempting one today. Up to 15 hours, only 21-ish to go!! 😁 Could be interesting with the kids under my feet though (half-term)...

Got a carton of soup in the fridge if I need it.

Just a smidge under 240 this morning, which is higher than I'd like but still down a bit from yesterday's weight, thank goodness!! Looks like I'm holding onto TOTM bloat already 🙄🙄 so that's probably goodbye to any loss for the next couple of weeks 😤

mumlikeaboss · 13/02/2023 10:05

Ahh welcome @itsmschanandlerbong 🤗

Agree completely with @Badlifeday , take it easy at least to begin with if you're not used to fasting. 16:8 is a great way to ease into it.

Ditto I have more energy on fast days, but crash a bit in the evening - but TBH most days I'm pretty done by 5/6pm whether I've eaten or not!!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 13/02/2023 14:43

Afternoon all
Monday FD for me today and looking like I have company. ❤️💜❤️
Also fasting Thursday

absolutelyknackeredcow · 13/02/2023 14:44

Welcome @itsmschanandlerbong
We are a nice team

harriethoyle · 13/02/2023 17:47

How's everyone doing? @itsmschanandlerbong how was your first FD?

I'm on the train home, starving Marvin! Fish and baked beans await, probably c.6.45...

Kitchen closed on 550 - breakfast about to be made for tomorrow w

mumlikeaboss · 13/02/2023 18:23

20-hour fast until 3pm, then had soup and a few other bits and pieces 🙈 Kitchen closed but definitely over 500 🤐

Calling it a mini fast!! Which is fbm, considering hormones 😏

harriethoyle · 13/02/2023 19:15

Kitchen closing on 700 because my aldi baked beans are c60 cals higher than heinz! 🙈 it'll do though and it's an IF regardless...

Hello my BFFs (best fasting friends)! I've been on a naughty non-fast few months, enjoyed my Christmas and have come back, tail between my legs, to a Monday fast. Oh dear!

Seriously though, since fasting a lot through the first half of last year, I have fasted a bit here and there and swam throughout the winter, so I don't feel too bad...

Last week I did two and a half days fast, and this week I'm hoping to make it to three again. But it will be hard as it's half term and my other half is a way which has already meant a trip to McDonalds with my DC, fortunately I resisted!

Eating salad and fish tonight (old habits die hard).

It's lovely to be back and see so many of all the old fasters still here, encouraging everyone!

itsmschanandlerbong · 13/02/2023 20:41

Thanks for the lovely welcome! Ending today on 529 cals and just over 10k steps so I'm happy with that 😊 what do you all eat that's low calorie? Also can I check if black coffee is OK during fasting times? (ie if doing 16:8)

sweetgingercat · 13/02/2023 20:51

Welcome Mrs Bong!

My go to fast day involves
Smoked fish and salad with vinegar and tomato dressing (less oil)
Goats cheese - it's low cal
Boiled egg and kimchi with soy sauce
Miso soup
A few sugar free butterscotch sweets 8 cal each( I know I shouldn't but they really help).

harriethoyle · 13/02/2023 20:55

Hi @sweetgingercat ! Welcome back!

Great first FD @itsmschanandlerbong well done 😊

mumlikeaboss · 13/02/2023 21:58

Black coffee is absolutely alright 👍🏻 ideally without sugar or sweeteners of course! 😁

Low-cal foods... Depends how you spread your food through the day, I tend to either eat nothing at all or else have a small meal all in one go in the evening - to keep as much of the day as possible actual 'fast'. Soup is excellent at this time of year, you can get some lovely tubs of fresh soup and add a small bit of cheese (I think you need a bit of fat to help you feel full)... Or else you can't go wrong with lean protein and a big mountain of veg. Easy to tie in with family meals too, just skip the spuds :)

EatYourFive · 14/02/2023 10:22

Welcome @itsmschanandlerbong and welcome back @sweetgingercat!
I was also fasting yesterday, was planning a b2b and finished at around 600 yesterday but I have the winter lurgy so gonna skip fasting today. Will do another day tomorrow or Thursday instead.

I also like to have fish (usually air fried!) on fast days and just tend to save most of the calories allowance until dinner time and have a smaller portion and reduce carbs (more sauce than pasta with my spag bol etc). Just like @mumlikeaboss I also find it helps to have a bit of fat to make you feel fuller so I tend to have a little bit of cheese or a few olives to snack on.

sweetgingercat · 14/02/2023 19:30

Hi @EatYourFive good to be back here again.

I also think a bit of fat is really helpful and I've found cutting on carbs the night before a fast day is also good at keeping hunger at bay.

itsmschanandlerbong · 14/02/2023 22:34

Great tips about reducing carbs / eating fat during FD, I'll need to keep that in mind, thank you. Today wasn't a fast day but I ate well so day 2 has also been a success 😊

harriethoyle · 15/02/2023 07:54

Anyone with me for FD2 today? Usual tuna thin and fish and baked beans for tea. Although considering getting some bread and having beans on toast instead which will be 100 less calories albeit much more carby 🤔

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 15/02/2023 08:16

@harriethoyle I am joining you! Probably just a single FD as still have some cold symptoms. Will have a small portion of a gousto meal for dinner and otherwise just a few snacks to keep me going. Good luck!

mumlikeaboss · 15/02/2023 10:38

I'm fasting today. Should be okay, got a super busy day planned.

Got a carb hangover from yesterday tho 🤐

harriethoyle · 15/02/2023 11:40

@EatYourFive @mumlikeaboss I'm fricking STARVING today... Roll on 1pm lunchtime!

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 15/02/2023 12:38

@harriethoyle I am also struggling today. Was planning to skip lunch altogether but not sure I can do that today. Might have a miso soup to keep me going and to warm up a bit.

mumlikeaboss · 15/02/2023 14:13

@harriethoyle @EatYourFive Feeling any better now?!

I'm pretty hungry too... Off to refill my water bottle for the 3rd time!! 💦

harriethoyle · 15/02/2023 14:49

@mumlikeaboss marginally but not much! I am just in a hungry mood at the moment. Roll on tea time, and out for a good lunch tomorrow so that should keep body and soul together!
