Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

@mumlikeaboss I get cravings and PMT round about the time I ovulate as well as before my TOTM. Joy! It feels like I have PMT half the month.

harriethoyle · 06/02/2023 21:18

Trains went tits up on the way home and dinner ended up being a station platform cornish pasty whilst waiting my connection 😭 kitchen closed on 850 rather than the planned 500. Grrrŕ...

Unexpected FD today as I woke up feeling grim (something viral, weak and queasy) so all I’ve had today has been a couple of pieces of fruit and some rice cakes. Starting to perk up a bit now and hopefully all right after I’ve had some sleep 😴

mumlikeaboss · 06/02/2023 21:53

@Onehappymam same here 🙄 grim isn't it!!

@harriethoyle 850 is a hell of a lot better than my effort today 🙈🤣

@SydneyCarton hope you feel better soon x

EatYourFive · 07/02/2023 07:36

@Bottl I barely touch my oven now and cook most things in my Ninja, it's the best thing ever in my kitchen!!!😁
@SydneyCarton hope you feel better soon and that's annoying @harriethoyle!

Day 2 b2b for me today, feeling strong!

SydneyCarton · 07/02/2023 08:06

Thanks @mumlikeaboss and @EatYourFive , much better today. Oddly didn’t feel anything like as hungry as I thought I would, but I have had my usual breakfast and will eat normally today, then do a FD on Wednesday when I’m in the office.

Badlifeday · 07/02/2023 08:14

Eating day here and hoping to not reconsume every calorie not used yesterday! At the very least I'm maintaining my 2.5 stone loss but really need to keep losing to make the horror of a fast day worth it! January was a bit of a non-event, let's hope February can be good for all of us ✊

Onehappymam · 07/02/2023 09:29

I’m the same @Badlifeday - been maintaining a 2.5 stone loss, gained a bit over Christmas, lost it in January, but just can’t seem to get to the 3 stone mark.

I bought an Instant Pot years ago after someone recommended it on here. It’s taken a few knocks over the years, so it’s looking a bit tired. I have an air fryer but it doesn’t have the pressure cooker function - I think this just might be the year that I upgrade to the ninja that does it all!

FD here today.

Yesterday’s NFD started so well. No breakfast, a light lunch, no alcohol, no dessert… then a biscuit here, a biscuit there, a bar of chocolate, then teen ordered a takeaway so I ordered a little something and picked at some other bits. Not good!

So today I’m making up for yesterday’s slip up. Today also marks 5 weeks of being alcohol free! Not something I ever thought I’d be saying.

Badlifeday · 07/02/2023 09:46

Over a month without alcohol is a big achievement!
i think I need to add more exercise in, to get past this sticking point and put less chocolate in my mouth

mumlikeaboss · 07/02/2023 09:59

Excuse the smells of a Maccie's breakfast wafting from over here 😳🙈

Confessing my ignorance too... What is a ninja?!

Onehappymam · 07/02/2023 11:58

Ninja is a kitchen gadget brand. They do a pressure cooker/air fryer combo that I have my eye on!

mumlikeaboss · 07/02/2023 21:00

@Onehappymam ahh! That sounds fab 🤩
I had an air fryer years ago and sold it because didn't use it much... Now want it back 😩😩
Wish I had worktop space for more gadgets, haha!

mumlikeaboss · 07/02/2023 21:05

Shouldn't have googled that, now I want one... 🤣 Not cheap though!! 😬

harriethoyle · 08/02/2023 08:23

Morning everyone, anyone fasting with me today? Only two fds this week because of a work course with an overnight stay tomorrow and Friday so won't lose on last week. Just trying to minimise damage from London trip 🤣

@mumlikeaboss I get cravings and PMT round about the time I ovulate as well as before my TOTM. Joy! It feels like I have PMT half the month.

That's interesting as I feel my PMT is often not limited to before my period. I really should pay more attention to what my body is telling me.

@mumlikeaboss - mine sits on top of my oven/hob. I would give it worktop priority over pretty much anything else in my kitchen. It is a bit cumbersome but totally makes up for it in its ability to turn my attempts at cooking into mostly edible delights!!! Grin

@harriethoyle - good luck with today's FD.

I woke up almost hoping today was going to be a FD. Should have done 16:8 because I know I wouldn't have got through my manic Wednesday afternoon with too few calories. Hey ho, will find a comfortable routine at some point, I'm sure!!

mumlikeaboss · 08/02/2023 11:29

I'm fasting today. Must make it work today because I messed up Monday's and I'm not sure I'll manage one tomorrow or Friday... 🙄

Weight is holding steady between 236-238, which I'm fine with 👍🏻 I'm in the lower end of my "yoyo range", but still another 7 or 8lbs before I hit new territory... I saw 229 for a hot minute over the summer, so I want to get under 230 and STAY THERE this time! 😆

harriethoyle · 08/02/2023 18:47

Kitchen closing on 777 - a bit high on the basis of a mis-labelled curry on MFP but still ok-ish. That's it for the week! Damage limitation next week 🤣

OP posts:
absolutelyknackeredcow · 10/02/2023 09:24

I'm on pre event fast - event is tomorrow - it will be my third of the week but having a quiet day so hoping it will be ok

mumlikeaboss · 10/02/2023 14:34

I'm trying for a FD, wasn't sure if I'd manage today but looks like it'll work after all.

Wednesday ended up a mini fast at best, definitely not under 500 😏 and then yesterday I just had insatiable cravings ALL BL**DY DAY 🤬 making me gain about 3lbs on the scales this morning!!!

So today's fast is much needed. Feeling fine so far, and going to keep it 0-cal so it doesn't morph into a 1000-cal 🙄😁

absolutelyknackeredcow · 10/02/2023 16:58

We can do it @mumlikeaboss

mumlikeaboss · 10/02/2023 17:17

We absolutely can @absolutelyknackeredcow

Feels like I'm on the home stretch now I've got past 5pm! Have been too busy to eat the afternoon, thankfully 😴

Just having a mug of hot chicken bovril, and focusing on how I will feel tomorrow morning... 🤞🏻

absolutelyknackeredcow · 10/02/2023 20:05

Kitchen closed on 500 but might have another biscuit before then

mumlikeaboss · 10/02/2023 20:28

Well done @absolutelyknackeredcow

Last 3 hours have been tough 🥴 SO nearly ate pizza off the kids' plates!! But I made it. S'been a long week 😴

Bottl · 13/02/2023 07:53

Morning everyone!
Checking in for a Monday FD.
FD 2 last week was a total write off but I was probably being a bit ambitious as I was away for the weekend.
Just got on the scales and I'm the same as I was last week so that's a relief - was fully expecting a gain.

harriethoyle · 13/02/2023 08:34

Morning @Bottl I'm joining you for the first of two FDs this week 😁
