Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

I’m 1.4lbs away from pre-Christmas weight. I agree, it takes twice as long to lose it as it does to put it on.

I’ve managed to navigate my working week by eating mindfully. Had a mini FD today to compensate for yesterday’s haggis, neeps and tatties followed by a very small portion of sticky toffee pudding.

Full FD tomorrow.

Bottl · 26/01/2023 21:27

@Onehappymam ooh, almost there!!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 27/01/2023 13:27

Friday fast here
Anyone else ?

mumlikeaboss · 27/01/2023 15:08

@absolutelyknackeredcow yep I'm here on my 3rd fd for the week!! Don't know what's got into me 😂

How's it going?

absolutelyknackeredcow · 27/01/2023 15:13

@mumlikeaboss ah my third too,
Got a massive eating week next week

Bottl · 27/01/2023 15:17

I'm here too!! Had my new teeth fitted at lunchtime so that helped me avoid eating anything Grin.

I've bought ingredients to make stir fry for tonight and wondering whether to cook it now and have one meal earlier or have soup now and cook the stir fry later - don't normally make it this far without eating anything.

mumlikeaboss · 27/01/2023 15:59

Vg 👍🏻

@Bottl I'd be tempted to hang on a bit longer and have a bigger dinner, personally!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 28/01/2023 09:29

Well I came in 550 and was hungry all night
Dropped not a gram between Friday and Saturday morning though which is mega depressing
I am fasting again tomorrow and then Friday

Onehappymam · 28/01/2023 10:55

Hopefully you’ll see a shift soon @absolutelyknackeredcow!

Yesterday’s FD didn’t happen, so I’m here today instead! Not sure if I’m going to do a FD today and a mini tomorrow, or b2b. Either way, I need a low cal weekend combined with high step count and a couple of workouts to keep moving in the right direction.

Bottl · 28/01/2023 12:17

@absolutelyknackeredcow my weight has stayed the same all week but my af arrived yesterday so I'm hoping for a drop on the scales by Monday or Tuesday.

Day 2 of b2b and I've already taken a chunk out of my allowance. Hoping to distract myself until this evening and then I've I've got last night's leftover stir fry.

I was supposed to be starting this 2 weeks ago, but decided to keep on OMAD, I’ve lost 4 stone (in a year) doing that and other methods of IF (just not 5:2) but I’m on and off it like an idiot for months now and stuck gaining a pound losing a pound and it’s really pissing me off. Still have 4lb to lose what I put on over Xmas. I must be the only person I know who goes to the gym 4 times a week and doesn’t look any different! Religious for 6 months going to the gym cardio and weights and my inches haven’t budged at all, I spoke to the personal trainer who works there (I don’t pay, he offers free advice) he said it’s got to be my food.

Im doing 5:2 Tues as my first day, cheese sandwich and bowl of soup and an apple.

Ive just done my TDEE, which factored in the gym 4 times a week and taken my 2 fast day calories off (I’m going to have 600 a day on FD) divided what’s left by 5 and it’s left me with 1800 a day for the other days. (I think 1800 is a bit much but I’ll go with it for now)

What sort of calories do other people have on non fast days?

Onehappymam · 29/01/2023 14:10

Welcome @danni0509! 4 stone is a fantastic achievement. Well done!

Generally it’s advised to set your TDEE to sedentary and not to factor in any exercise.

Have you looked at your macros? Most of us aren’t getting enough protein or fibre. A diet high in protein and fibre keeps us feeling full. Also affects our body composition. I def feel and look leaner compared to when my diet was higher in carbs.

Onehappymam · 29/01/2023 16:21

As I understand it - if you’re dividing what’s left by 5 you’re eating back your FD calories, so you won’t have a deficit.

My TDEE at sedentary is 1600 per day (11,200 weekly)
I have 2 days at 500 & 5 days at roughly 1600 (although some days I’m over, some days I’m under), giving me a total of 9000 and so a weekly deficit of 2200 without taking exercise into account.

I try to track everything on nutracheck (when I’m not eating all the chocolate and biscuits in sight!). Though some days I wing it. The closer you are to goal, the trickier it gets.

danni0509 · 29/01/2023 16:30

Sorry didn’t mention @Onehappymam I set it on the TDEE for cutting (ie losing weight) so not my maintenance calories.

danni0509 · 29/01/2023 16:33

I have nutracheck, I mostly put things in, I eat quite a lot of protein, 100g a day roughly, sometimes just over / just under.

Thanks I’ll try the TDEE on sedentary

harriethoyle · 30/01/2023 07:46

Morning all, anyone joining me today? A single today then b2b Weds and Thursday when DH is away..

OP posts:
Onehappymam · 30/01/2023 07:55

I had a FD on Sat and a mini yesterday (although I pinched far too many biscuits. They were very small, but still!) so it’s a NFD for me today.

At 1600 cals my protein target is 140g @danni0509. I say target, as some days I don’t hit it. 1800 cals at 100g of protein seems a bit on the low side. I had to start counting macros as cals and 5:2 alone wasn’t doing it for me anymore.

I am 6.4 lbs away from target and it seems like I have a mountain to climb! I’m capable of gaining 6.4lbs in one weekend! But it’s so slow coming off at this stage.

mumlikeaboss · 30/01/2023 08:03

I'm with you for a Monday FD @harriethoyle

Did 3 last week and dropped a lot of (regain) weight but I think most of it was hormones / inflammation... Might try for 3 again this week but will see how we go as I've been guilty of crash-and-burn before 🙈🙈

mumlikeaboss · 30/01/2023 08:16

@danni0509 how much more are you wanting to lose? 4 stone is fabulous 🌟🌟

I'm no help on the calories / macros front because I don't count anything and never have... But then I'm not exactly the poster child for consistent weight loss either as I've been plateau-ing for over a year now 🙈😁

Bottl · 30/01/2023 11:31

Hi @danni0509 - congratulations on losing 4 stone!!!

FD for me too today. Had a reasonable nfd yesterday which is probably why I feel so hungry this morning. Going to have some soup later - hoping to hold off until about 2ish

mumlikeaboss · 30/01/2023 16:27

Sooooo cold and tired today 😫

Don't normally have any calories but I'm just having a mug of hot chicken bovril and some olives/cheese to try and see me through!! Just not feeling 100%.

How's it going, @Bottl @harriethoyle

Bottl · 30/01/2023 16:41

Me too!!! I can't wait to go to bed to warm up!!!

mumlikeaboss · 30/01/2023 16:57

On to the herbal tea now... Not long until bed!! 🤞

harriethoyle · 30/01/2023 17:29

I'm.in the bath @mumlikeaboss @Bottl to try and get warm. It's FREEZING 🥶
