Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Hello, joining in for a day 1 of b2b after a week long break from fasting (was travelling for work). Kitchen closing at 559.

mumlikeaboss · 30/01/2023 19:48

Handed the kids over to DH now, hallelujah. I'm lying on my electric heat pad for my back, and it's glorious 😍😍

Had half a tub of olives, some cheese, and a small tub of leftover salad... Literally no idea on calories but probably about a tenth of what I'd usually eat in a day 🤣 so I'm calling that a successful fast day.

Well done everyone else 😊

EatYourFive · 01/02/2023 07:36

Seems like it was quiet here yesterday! I did my 2nd day of B2B and finished around 650. Back to pre-work trip weight now so happy with that. Considering another fast tomorrow to get back on track but will see how I feel.

SydneyCarton · 01/02/2023 08:16

Came in at 550 yesterday. Probably my only FD this week but will try to do 16:8 tomorrow. Train strikes, teacher strikes and ill children are throwing everything out of whack this week

harriethoyle · 01/02/2023 12:09

Hello all - excellent fasting yesterday @EatYourFive and @SydneyCarton ! I am on a FD today - and probably tomorrow as well I think. Tuna thin for lunch and breaded fish and baked beans planned for supper - should be c.650...

mumlikeaboss · 01/02/2023 12:56

Hello all, I'm fasting today as well - 2nd for the week. Not hungry so far but COLD again...

Might do a third on Friday but might stick to OMAD instead, don't know until I get there!

Bottl · 01/02/2023 12:58

Good luck fasters!

I think I need to be stricter with myself. I was hoping that my slightly relaxed version of 5:2 was going to be enough to kick things off but I might just have been deluded HmmGrin

mumlikeaboss · 01/02/2023 13:19

@Bottl how long have you been doing it this time round? And do you do any other form of IF other than 5:2, ie a daily eating window approach on your NFDs?

I find 5:2 or 4:3 a bit hit-and-miss, I don't do it every week like some folk on here do. Sometimes it's fairly easy but some weeks my body and brain just don't play ball and I don't manage to do any down days at all. But I always do a daily fast anyway - along the lines of 16/8 or 18/6 - and that helps keep things in check.

Bottl · 01/02/2023 13:34

I think this is week 3 or 4. I was trying not to track anything (other than start weight) because I turned into a bit of a 5:2 bore last time Blush.

I can see/feel other benefits apart from weight loss so that's good - have a lot more energy and period symptoms are much reduced.

Will try and add in a couple of 16:8s but the one thing I really look forward to on a 5 day is breakfast...maybe that's where I'm coming unstuck!!

mumlikeaboss · 01/02/2023 16:38

That's great that you can feel other benefits. Worth keeping going just for that :)

I tend to have breakfast the day after I've done a down day because I think it's good to get your metabolism going again after a day of zero (or very few) calories. But on other days I skip it and have only one or two meals.

I get what you say about not wanting to be a 5:2 bore, lol... I similarly don't like tracking stuff because it gets obsessive. Only thing I track (aside from weight) is my fasting hours on a fasting app, purely for interest.

harriethoyle · 01/02/2023 21:29

Kitchen closing on 702. B2b tomorrow I think!

@Bottl I do exactly the same as @mumlikeaboss and mix 16:8 in on days that don't follow a FD

OP posts:
Bottl · 01/02/2023 22:05

Yeah, I think mixing things up sounds like a good plan.

LaMadrilena · 02/02/2023 08:46

FD today. Colleague that I argued with yesterday has brought me a cake as a peace offering. I may have to make the sacrifice, in the interests of good work relations...

harriethoyle · 02/02/2023 17:58

Haha @LaMadrilena - maybe they're deliberately sabotaging you?!

Just about to put tea on. Starving marvin today...

harriethoyle · 02/02/2023 18:44

Kitchen closing on 703, same as yesterday, giving 1406 for the b2b. Happy with that!

mumlikeaboss · 02/02/2023 20:01

Well done @harriethoyle

I'm going for a 3rd FD tomorrow as I've got a busy day, which always helps.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 03/02/2023 08:52

Very eating week and I have only got one fast today - so with you @mumlikeaboss
Scales are not being kind

mumlikeaboss · 03/02/2023 09:07

@absolutelyknackeredcow I feel your pain, most of January was like that for me 🤦🏼‍♀️

Pulling it back though, and numbers are going the right way again... 🤞🏻

Hope your FD goes well today! Xx

harriethoyle · 03/02/2023 09:13

Keep the faith @absolutelyknackeredcow - I lost minimal amounts after fd 1 and 2 this week but a big whoosh overnight has taken me back to pre Christmas weight finally. It WILL happen if you persevere!

OP posts:
absolutelyknackeredcow · 03/02/2023 09:48

Thanks both - i thought i did very well last week with a triple fast but lost nothing.
I have got four before a big event next weekend so fingers crossed

Bottl · 03/02/2023 13:25

Hi everyone,
FD for me today. Been busy and kind of productive (apart from an extra trip to the supermarket this morning to collect something that's actually due for collection tomorrow and totally my own mistake Hmm).
Taking my elderly aunt back there in 10 mins for her weekly shop and not feeling emotionally equipped to deal with it this afternoon.

mumlikeaboss · 03/02/2023 18:27

How's it gone, @Bottl @absolutelyknackeredcow ?

I got to 23 hours on water and coffee 👍🏻 and I've just had a small meal of some leftovers and a chunk of chocolate brownie that one of the kids gave me 🤭 oops. As usual no idea of exact calories but confident it wasn't more than 500-600.

I'm done with this week 😴 roll on the weekend!!!

Bottl · 03/02/2023 18:54

Well done!!

I've just scoffed a handful of cashews Blush. I'd been doing really well until then - just water and a coffee this morning.

I think I should try and have leftovers ready for a FD because as soon as I enter the kitchen to prepare anything, all willpower disappears.

I did survive the second trip to the supermarket though and only bought essentials so that was a win Grin

absolutelyknackeredcow · 03/02/2023 19:12

Been ok - have one last rich tea ready for later

absolutelyknackeredcow · 03/02/2023 19:12

Well done @Bottl @mumlikeaboss
