Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Made it 🤩 downhill from here now the kids are out of my hair and I can put my feet up (or just go to bed 🤭🤫)

How did everyone else get on?

Onehappymam · 23/01/2023 20:00

How are things going @mumlikeaboss?

Well done for getting those miles in @absolutelyknackeredcow! I’ve barely left the sofa, as I’ve been WFH. I’ll take the dog out later, so that should get the steps up a bit. Never got round to today’s workout. Just couldn’t face it.

Mini for me at 1014 calories. It wasn’t intentional, but I wasn’t that hungry, so thought I’d save the calories for another day. Not sure if I’ll be up for tomorrows planned FD though!

mumlikeaboss · 23/01/2023 20:29

@Onehappymam I'm done and dusted... just black coffee, herbal tea, sparkling water 👍🏻

Feeling good but knackered, having a quick bath and then an early night 😴

Onehappymam · 23/01/2023 20:30

X post. Looks like you smashed it!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 23/01/2023 20:31

Came in at 550 but might need another Rich tea before bed

harriethoyle · 24/01/2023 09:39

Some excellent Monday fasts - well done all!!

I'm here for day one of B2B - chicken and chickpea curry planned for tonight, usual tuna thin for lunch. Feeling hungry but determined!

Good luck, @harriethoyle - hope you're getting on ok.

Today's been quite a hectic day, work wise so not too much opportunity to mindlessly put food in my mouth which is good.

Onehappymam · 24/01/2023 16:49

Good luck @harriethoyle!

I find that hectic work days are the hardest @Bottl. I do well all day, then after work I am famished and want to eat everything in sight!

Had an early dinner tonight as I have a weight lifting class later. Today’s FD came in at 730cals, so more of a mini than a proper FD. Dinner was rather tasty though, and worth the extra calories: butternut squash ravioli with Parmesan and butter and a side salad followed by a dark chocolate ginger biscuit.

mumlikeaboss · 24/01/2023 17:57

That sounds delish @Onehappymam 😍

I've had a NFD today, just about to tuck into a gorgeous shepherd's pie (all minty and lamb gravyish 👌🏻) and should be done within an 8-hour window.

Not sure whether to fast again tomorrow or Thursday... Might do tomorrow I think.

The whole food/eating/weight thing is so complex, isn't it!! Really, we just just need food for fuel and yet, I put food in my mouth for a million other reasons 🤯

Your dinner sounds delish. Enjoy your class - the only exercise I do now is walking and I should probably be doing more of that.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 24/01/2023 19:31

Hello all
As often with a b2b less hungry on day 2
Going to have a banana and options and should come in at 600
How did others get on

harriethoyle · 24/01/2023 20:00

Kitchen closing on 792 @absolutelyknackeredcow A bit higher than intended but can pull a bit back tomorrow on day 2 🤞

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 24/01/2023 21:47

757 for day one of b2b. Little bit high but I’ll see how day two goes

absolutelyknackeredcow · 24/01/2023 22:38

Oh well done everyone

harriethoyle · 25/01/2023 09:12

Morning team, who is joining me and @SydneyCarton today for a FD?

OP posts:
LaMadrilena · 25/01/2023 09:48

I did yesterday, about 550 (and a weights session first thing) and I’m still suffering! Back to normal today, and another FD tomorrow.

Yesterday for lunch I had (don’t laugh) a lentil and veg babyfood. DD still has the odd one as she loves them, and I discovered a while back that the lentil one, with a bit of salt and pepper, is amazing! 140 calories and nutritionally balanced.

Make sure you all stay hydrated!

SydneyCarton · 25/01/2023 09:49

My second FD has been a bit scuppered by an ill child, so I am WFH instead of office-based. I've got meetings from 11 to 2 (ugh) so going to aim for 16:8 and fast until they're over. I think I stopped eating at 8.45 last night, so that should easily give me a 16 hour fasting window, if not more.

mumlikeaboss · 25/01/2023 13:33

I'm joining @harriethoyle 👍🏻

18.5 hours in and finding it weirdly easy so far...! Could be because I'm a bit woozy with painkillers 😖 (dodgy back)

@SydneyCarton sorry yours got hijacked 😫

harriethoyle · 25/01/2023 13:41

Sounds like a good compromise @SydneyCarton

Sorry your back is giving you gip @mumlikeaboss ! Hope it gets better soon

I have just inhaled lunch but a really busy day so hopefully won't struggle too much this afternoon...

absolutelyknackeredcow · 25/01/2023 18:19

Well done all the Wednesday fasters - good drop after b2b but lots of cake today
Going for another Friday

mumlikeaboss · 25/01/2023 19:59

How did your afternoon go @harriethoyle ?

I'm past the danger point now the kids are fed and in bed. Well chuffed, feels like ages since I managed 2 FDs in a week!!

harriethoyle · 25/01/2023 20:54

Thanks for asking @mumlikeaboss - kitchen closing on 656 giving 1346 over the b2b. Happy with that! Well done on getting through the danger zone 🤣

👏🏻👏🏻

harriethoyle · 26/01/2023 11:17

Another half pound off compared to this time last week - now back to pre holiday weight with only 1.8kg to go, before I'm back to pre-Christmas weight... It takes a lot longer to get off than put on! Hopefully next week will break the back of it.

OP posts:
Bottl · 26/01/2023 13:25

Well done!!

Not only does it take longer, it takes so much more effort!!!

FD tomorrow for me and have a half hour dental appointment at lunchtime so that should help stop me being tempted to eat anything Grin
