Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Thanks @Onehappymam , will move food to later in the day.Just had a bowl of lentil and veg soup and the fibre is definitely helping plus it was delicious !.
Good luck with today’s FD

harriethoyle · 19/01/2023 13:44

@Onehappymam we're snowed in! I'm really hoping I can get out tomorrow...

LaMadrilena · 19/01/2023 16:38

I'm on my 2nd FD, and it's not gone so well... absolutely this starving this afternoon! I'll definitely be over 500 today. And gym in the morning - I don't want to faint while holding weights over my head!

Onehappymam · 19/01/2023 19:51

Kitchen closed on 512. Delighted with that.

You still hanging in there @LaMadrilena? Some FD are tougher than others.

harriethoyle · 19/01/2023 20:00

Kitchen closing here at 774. Gives c.1425 over b2b which is a bit higher than planned but not catastrophic. Roll on tomorrow's hot cross bun breakfast!

@LaMadrilena it's definitely harder to fast when it's cold! Hope you held put.

Fab day @Onehappymam Well done!

I’ve been looking over my results and in the last two weeks, despite giving up alcohol, doing 5:2, and working out several times a week, I’ve lost the grand total of fuck all.

My weight jumped up over Christmas and New Year, but it certainly isn’t jumping back down any time soon.

EatYourFive · 20/01/2023 07:43

I finished at 647 yesterday for day 2, can't wait to have some of that posh organic sourdough I bought for breakfast (bread is my downfall, can live without cakes but when it comes to bread...)

@Onehappymam Maybe you could try 2+1 for a couple of weeks to kick-start things? When i want more progress is usually fast Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and it seems to make a difference. Once the weight starts shifting you could go back to the usual 5:2?

Bottl · 20/01/2023 08:38

Morning everyone,
FD for me today and going to try b2b again Sun/Mon.
interesting to read some of you find it difficult to fast when you're at home. I'm a childminder so home every day (with toddlers demanding multiple lunch sittings) so maybe I need to be a bit kinder to myself for finding it so hard to stick with it.
I'm off on a Friday and have a really quiet day on a Monday so will try and keep those days as FD plus one weekend day for damage limitation!!

Bottl · 20/01/2023 12:12

Saboteurs around every corner!!!
Just took my elderly relative to the supermarket and as I was leaving her house she shoved two bags of donuts at me. I've dumped them in the kitchen and made myself a peppermint tea to try and distract myself!!

harriethoyle · 20/01/2023 12:46

@EatYourFive I TOTALLY agree re bread. I love the stuff.

@Onehappymam I second adding a third - I have actually done 4 FDs this week (sun, M, W, Th) and have lost all of my skiing weight - quick on quick off. it's been the most tedious week ever mind!

@Bottl flex your willpower!! (I would fail miserably, FYI!)

OP posts:
Bottl · 20/01/2023 13:11

@harriethoyle I'm trying - DS has just come home for lunch and the smells coming from the kitchen are divine!!!! Was hoping to wait until 2 to have my soup but not sure I can wait any longer!!

Well done for 2 b2b!! And great news you've lost what you gained.

harriethoyle · 20/01/2023 13:29

It's not something I would like to do very often @Bottl because it was so SO boring...!! but good to know it's in reserve as necessary... (ie after every holiday!)

Hi all,

I've not been managing to fast with it being so cold but hoping to get back on it on Monday.

Weekend aims are to drink lots of water and cut out snacking.

Onehappymam · 22/01/2023 09:19

When I first started this WOL all those years ago I did 4:3, but actually gained weight as I overate on my NFD.

It’s the NFDs I need to get a handle on. A couple of times a week I constantly graze and undo my work on FDs. Adding in another FD will just encourage overeating.

I wonder if it’s to do with dry January, as instead of throwing wine over my neck I’m constantly grazing. I dread to think how much toast and crisps I’ve eaten this weekend. And it’s so cold! My instinct is to hide under a duvet and eat.

Good luck tomorrow @beststepforward. I’m fasting today to try and undo my overeating from the last couple of days.

Thanks @Onehappymam hope it goes well for you! What are you planning to eat?

Bottl · 22/01/2023 11:50

I'm fasting today too.

I've just submitted my tax return and it's taking all my resolve to no dive into the kitchen and eat everything in it to cheer myself up.

Onehappymam · 22/01/2023 14:52

Planning on having lemon and parsley hot smoked salmon with veg. Kids will have the same but with potatoes.

Glad to have someone joining me @Bottl. How’s your day so far?

I did a couple of workouts this morning, then took our puppy a walk with my youngest. So far, so good, but like I said up thread, it’s the NFD where things go to pot.

Bottl · 22/01/2023 15:06

Sounds great, @Onehappymam

I've had 2 steamed eggs already and planning either jacket potato with prawns later or leftover turkey and veg.

I feel absolutely frozen today!! Going to do a bit of decluttering and see if that warms me up 🥶

Onehappymam · 23/01/2023 07:39

I went to bed in the middle of the day yesterday for a quick blast of my electric blanket!

Scales have pretty much stayed the same, so looks like my FD cancelled out my appalling eating on NFD.

This week I’m focussing on eating more mindfully!

Bottl · 23/01/2023 07:46

Ooh, middle of the day electric blanket sounds like a marvellous idea!!

I should be a bit more active today than I was yesterday so hopefully will be a bit warmer.

Good luck to all the Monday fasters

harriethoyle · 23/01/2023 09:29

@Onehappymam have you tried IF on NFD? I find it really helps me avoid over-eating...

I'm b2b tomorrow and Weds as DH away so much easier to fast when just cooking for myself. IF today and Friday.

OP posts:
Onehappymam · 23/01/2023 12:17

@harriethoyle having a smaller window to eat on NFD definitely helps. When things were going well for me on 5:2 I consistently didn’t eat until 12pm, even after a FD. After dinner I’d have something like a square of dark chocolate and a couple of almonds, then I’d be done for the day. I’ve slipped out of this habit though.

January has been a tough month! I just want to curl up under the sofa and eat biscuits. On the plus side, I’ve completed 15 workouts this year.

harriethoyle · 23/01/2023 12:30

Well you're doing better than me @Onehappymam - I've completed 0! My recent job change has led to me being very sedentary but is also demanding in terms of hours and I am racking my brains a bit to think about how to get consistent exercise in...
