Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Morning, I think 7lbs after a holiday is to be expected, really? Will come off quickly.
Im on an eating day and trying really hard to not let it turn into an over-eating day - my loss has been static for a while.

Bottl · 15/01/2023 17:24

Hi everyone,
I'm just creeping back in after a very long time away. I've tried, unsuccessfully, to get back in the zone so many times - feeling a bit more focussed so fingers crossed I'll stick with it this time.
FD today and possibly tomorrow aswell but will see how the rest of today goes first.

harriethoyle · 15/01/2023 19:02

The problem is @Badlifeday that I still had 3 lbs to lose from Christmas! 😆🙈

But I've managed day one of the b2b today (kitchen closing 674) and committed to tomorrow too! How did you get on @Bottl ? Welcome back 😊

Bottl · 15/01/2023 19:36

Thank you!
Not too bad, thanks. I'm not counting calories at this stage - I just want to get back into the habit of fasting. I was doing really well until mid-afternoon and then fell into the biscuits/cashews Hmm but have just had a small bowl of stir fry and off to do a bit of decluttering to distract myself before bed!! Far better than a normal day but need to try harder Grin

harriethoyle · 16/01/2023 15:25

Is anyone fasting with me today? A satisfying debloat whoosh down overnight which made my saintly Sunday fast worthwhile! HUNGRY now though...

OP posts:
Bottl · 16/01/2023 18:40

Yes, me!!
Has been a reasonably good day and hoping I can keep it going long enough to see some results this time.
Glad to hear your Sunday fast was a success.
I feel cold and tired now - DS and I just took the dogs out for walk, it's freezing!! Think I'll be going to bed early tonight and looking forward to waking up early for breakfast Grin

Badlifeday · 16/01/2023 18:55

I would love a whoosh! Haven't whooshed for ages. I'm fasting today, enjoying a bottle of fizzy water on ice just now (the high life)

harriethoyle · 16/01/2023 19:40

@Badlifeday 😆😆😆 you crazy thing!

Kitchen closing here on 674, giving 1345 for the b2b. Hot cross buns for tomorrow's breakfast.

Back on Wednesday for second b2b of the week (fmfl).

Day one of b2b for me today. Haven’t been tracking calories apart from on FDs but I might need to start doing that as I got a bit distracted by biscuits yesterday….

Onehappymam · 17/01/2023 19:36

Distracted by biscuits would make a fab username! Also sums up my life. Grin How’s the FD going Sydney?

Cracking FD for me today. Came in at just under 500 cals. My step count is pitiful at the moment. The weather here is absolutely wild! And it is SO COLD. Been trying to do extra workouts at home to compensate. Hopefully I shall see a shift in the scale’s tomorrow.

Planning on fasting again on Thursday. I used to hold off eating until 12pm on NFD. I think this would be a good tactic as once I eat I wake the hunger beast!

SydneyCarton · 17/01/2023 21:34

@Onehappymam 🤣 Managed to avoid too many biscuits today but did have a couple for pudding after a chicken and prawn stir fry. FD finished at 700 for day one. Well done on the FD coming in under 500, and I know what you mean about motivation to exercise when it’s cold, my Monday run didn’t happen yesterday!

EatYourFive · 18/01/2023 07:39

Good morning, checking in for day 1 B2B and feeling confident.😊

harriethoyle · 18/01/2023 09:03

Morning @EatYourFive ! I'm also here on b2b. We're snowed in which means I'm WFH which I suspect will make things a lot harder... 🙈

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 18/01/2023 09:04

@SydneyCarton are you also fasting with us?

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 18/01/2023 09:37

@harriethoyle I am, yes. It was a bit doubtful as DD2 is a bit unwell and I might have had to work from home which tends to scupper FDs for me, but she’s gone to Grandma and I’m on my way into the office. Good luck everyone!

LaMadrilena · 18/01/2023 16:26

Room for one more? I just started 5:2, yesterday was my first FD (after having gone to the gym in the morning...). Haven’t had had nearly as strong an urge to recoup the calories today as I thought I would! Although I was nearly scuppered by a colleague dumping all her Christmas sweets in the staff kitchen. Back to the fasting tomorrow.

Are you seeing good results?

LaMadrilena · 18/01/2023 16:27

BTW, yesterday’s count was just pushed over the 500 mark by the spoonful of natural yoghurt in my soup.

EatYourFive · 18/01/2023 19:09

Welcome @LaMadrilena, that's an excellent start! I have been doing intermittent fasting since November 2021 (had done it before a few years earlier) and have lost around ~12kg since. I have had weeks off in between (holidays, work travel) and I never count calories on my non-FDs. Very happy with it.

Kitchen closing at 578 here, a bit more than I wanted but the cold weather is not helping!

SydneyCarton · 18/01/2023 21:37

I’m going to call it 1000 calories for today, had a very beige dinner of party leftovers which needed to be eaten. 1700 for the b2b

Colette · 18/01/2023 22:04

Hi ,have been lurking 😊
Just wanted to ask for some advice please - I tried fasting a few years ago and it worked quite well . However started again last week and not being able to sleep because I’m too hungry ! This is when I’ve saved most of the calories for my evening meal too and made sure it is reasonably high protein .
Should I try getting back into it in stages , or any suggestions ? Thanks

Badlifeday · 19/01/2023 07:37

I'm less hungry when I don't eat anything at all (for a day) I think if I ate a little it would make me hungry for more. What approach are you following?

harriethoyle · 19/01/2023 08:13

Kitchen closed yesterday on 684. WFH again today which makes b2b harder 🙈 anyone with me today?

OP posts:
LaMadrilena · 19/01/2023 09:13

No b2bs here, the thought of it makes me queasy! But I am on a FD today. The staff kitchen is still full of chocolate. I have cabbage for lunch.

Colette · 19/01/2023 09:25

Thanks @Badlifeday
I’m trying 5:2

Onehappymam · 19/01/2023 10:57

I find that saving all my calories for the evening works best for me @Colette. Like @Badlifeday, once I start eating it makes me hungry for more, so spacing out the calories just doesn’t work for me. Are your FD’s high in fibre as well as high protein? I find that makes a difference for me.

Yesterday’s NFD was calorific! Blush I find there’s 2 days before my period and another day round about ovulation that I eat everything in sight. I usually reach for wine round about this time too, but thankfully I managed to resist as I’m doing dry jan.

Working from home today, with kids here too. Yet another storm battering the house. After yesterday I really need a successful FD today. Might be a tough one. Will give it my best though!
