Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Hi. Just want to mark my place please. I’ll come back later and read the thread.

Ive been doing some form of intermittent fasting for 11 months, (OMAD, 16:8, 20:4) I’ve gone from 16st down to 12st but have gained half a stone back over Xmas having 2 weeks off (and eating anything in sight)

Got back on it New years day, but fancy a change and want to try 5:2, not done this one yet.

I have about 3 more stone to lose.

Also - lovely drop over night and after four fasts this year I have now got off my Xmas weight and am back to target weight. Think no booze helped too Grin

I might do a third fast this week but I will see how I go

I was fasting yesterday, very happy to have my breakfast this morning! Going to try to not make this an over-eating day. Though have already had an extra piece of toast and a left-over After Eight so not getting off to a good start!

Day one of a b2b for me, first fast in … a while! Didn’t go too mad over Christmas but didn’t hold back either. Slacked off on the running as well, should have gone yesterday and won’t get another chance until Thursday. Miserable rainy weather too, fingers crossed all the Christmas snacks are gone when I get into the office otherwise I might be tempted 😬

Well done @absolutelyknackeredcow! That’s fantastic after only 4 fasts.

My step count is pitiful today @SydneyCarton. the weather is horrendous. Don’t blame you for nor fancying a run.

Determined to get off to a great start this year so for my calculator out. Turns out a b2b + another FD or mini FD later in the week (which is what I’ve been doing) gives me a lower calorie deficit than 2 x FD at 500, so I’m going back to 2 x FD.

Will prob do a Fri as my second FD of the week.

Kitchen closing to end d2 of B2B. First time fasting in a while and wasn't bad except I forgot I had made lunch plans today so friend showed up and I was ill prepared. Luckily got away with having tea instead. Friend was the best and very cool about it all.

Great work everyone!
Pleased to report my weight is down 2 kg from this time last week and thereby back to pre-holiday levels. 🙂So happy with intermittent right now, it's amazing that you can have two weeks 'off' eating copious amounts of cheese and choc and way too much wine and then be back to your usual weight with just two B2B sessions.

The scales seem to have stuck a bit for me, which is to be expected I suppose as it’s my totm. A wee bit disheartening though when I’ve even been tracking my NFD and I’ve been working out. Ah well, surely it means I’m due a whoosh! soon though.

708 calories for today which makes 1230 in total for the B2B, which I’m really pleased with. Both days it’s been tea and water during the day and one evening meal with sushi, apples and sugar free Polos Grin, plus Tesco’s lentil crisps which are only 93 cals per pack.

Really looking forward to marmite toast for breakfast tomorrow 😋

Morning campers! Back from holidays and 7lb put on 🤪 so I'm doing a dreaded Sunday fast to get two b2b in this week. Sun/Mon and weds/Thurs. No booze til next Friday either. FML!
