Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

@harriethoyle - I really enjoyed it too - and hoping will come off quickly

mumlikeaboss · 03/01/2023 14:49

Half a stone over Christmas holidays is nothing, guys 😁😁 will soon be gone...

I'm still lurking because I love reading how everyone's getting on 🤗 I do the odd 'down' day but mostly sticking to daily fasts - 20:4 on average.

Stress and circumstances had me put on about 14lbs over the last couple of months 😰😬 even with daily fasting!! But somehow I managed to drop NINE of those over Christmas 🥳 so I'm only 5lbs up from my happy summer weight ☀

absolutelyknackeredcow · 03/01/2023 19:16

Well done @mumlikeaboss
Late night at work so hungry for my soup 😂

harriethoyle · 03/01/2023 19:18

Well done @harriethoyle
475 here - pretty happy with that !

anoldcharter · 04/01/2023 08:44

I nearly did @harriethoyle but decided against it while DS is not back at school yet

Managed a really good day yesterday, had about 1400 cals (TDEE is 1850) and no alcohol (!!) it felt good to be in a little more control

hoping for a similar day today, good luck to those fasting today Smile

Onehappymam · 04/01/2023 12:18

well done Harriet! I’m going to try for a FD today.

My weight’s up by over a stone in less than two weeks! That has to be a record!

harriethoyle · 04/01/2023 12:50

@Onehappymam amazing 😆😆😆😆 it'll come off quickly though. This morning's scales had a very satisfying downwards whoosh! Day 2 no easier than day 1 though...

Hi everyone and happy new year!

I'm also back to fasting after a Christmas break, day 1 B2B today and so far so good.
By the way I was actually pleased that I have only gained around half a stone as I know that will come off in no time.. Last year I gained closer to one whole stone during the Christmas break and that took much longer to shift.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 04/01/2023 18:53

@EatYourFive - Happy new year!
Kitchen closed on 600 on day 2
Happy with that
Hopefully a nice drop and then another fast on Friday

EatYourFive · 04/01/2023 19:25

Well done @harriethoyle excellent start to the year! What's your goal for this year? I just booked flights to somewhere very tropical for August (BA sale is on and needed something to look forward to!) and I am hoping to be able to wear some proper shorts whilst there and not some mumsy knee-length ones. It's a big challenge as I have always been prone to thunder thighs, cellulite and chafing!

Kitchen closed at 465 here.

EatYourFive · 04/01/2023 19:27

Sorry meant you @absolutelyknackeredcow, picked the name too quickly! @harriethoyle Hope you have had a good start too!

harriethoyle · 04/01/2023 19:32

Kitchen closing here on 766. 1364 for the b2b. Thank goodness that's over!

Kitchen closed on 666!

Was east enough considering it’s the first time I’ve tasted in a while. Managed a walk and deep cleaned/deck uttered the living-room. A fair change from this time yesterday when I was drinking wine and allll the cheese.

Well done @harriethoyle @absolutelyknackeredcow and @EatYourFive! That holiday sounds fab - so exciting to have something to look forward to. Last time we went abroad was 2019. We’ve a holiday booked for July and I can’t wait.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 04/01/2023 20:42

Well done @Onehappymam
Im actively looking forward to weigh in tomorrow

harriethoyle · 04/01/2023 20:43

@EatYourFive we just booked DSDs 18th birthday holiday in the BA sale 😆 by the way, I am generous of thigh and SWEAR by my Joules chino mid thigh shorts. Really flattering.

Well done @Onehappymam @absolutelyknackeredcow . Here's to a SV tomorrow morning 🤞

Just had to do an emergency biscuit - still st 650

harriethoyle · 04/01/2023 21:16

Same @absolutelyknackeredcow I had to have emergency toast after supper because I was still so starving 😆

OP posts:
absolutelyknackeredcow · 05/01/2023 07:31

Well it was worth it - a strong 3.8lbs down so only 3lbs left to go. Doing another tomorrow

EatYourFive · 05/01/2023 07:54

Well done @absolutelyknackeredcow with your weight loss, that's impressive! And good work last night @Onehappymam, holiday in July sounds fab! I know it's only January but gives you hope!

Thanks for the tip re shorts @harriethoyle! I can see they have a sale on as well so will try and order some tonight. Are Joules usually true to size? Just wondering if I should play it safe and order a size 12 or be brave and go for a 10!!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 06/01/2023 10:05

Had a very active and calorie counting day and have lost another 0.5lb so doing a third fast of the week.
Only 2.5lb to reach target weight
Anyone with me today ?

harriethoyle · 06/01/2023 10:55

@EatYourFive I think they're quite generous but I have totally skewed idea of my own size so probably not the best person to advise... buy one of each and return one!

@absolutelyknackeredcow Friday warrior!

I've taken 4 of the Christmas lbs off this week but skiing will not assist with that so I am going to try and limit damage next week and then work hard for the rest of Jan to get back to pre-Christmas weight which was only 1lb off target! Nothing huge planned post skiing so no reason I can't do at least 2 FD a week... Am going to IF on non-FD too I think, it definitely helped pre-Christmas.

OP posts:
Onehappymam · 06/01/2023 11:28

Some great losses so soon after Christmas! Well done.

Managed day 2 of b2b yesterday at 762, which means 1502 cals over the two days. Down 2lbs this morning. It’s a start. I find b2b easier than -500.

I’ve no plans over the weekend other than tidying, so a good opportunity to get some workouts done and also some meal prep and batch cooking.

I’m curious how long others on this thread have been fasting? My first FD was 9 years ago!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 06/01/2023 16:09

Well done @Onehappymam sounds great!
I have been fasting for five years
