Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

I'm still hanging in but by a thread! Roll on tomorrow morning...

Great work from everyone!! I’m finding it such a struggle not to overdo it when I finally do eat- I just want to keep on eating! Yesterday was not my finest fast, went a little over 600. I try to be quite strict with the 500. But it’s better than it could be, my NFDs have also been higher so I’m not trying to lose any more weight this month, the goal is to maintain within a pound or two until January 3rd.

harriethoyle · 13/12/2022 18:15

Kitchen closing on 616 to give c.1210 calories across b2b. I'll take that!

EatYourFive · 13/12/2022 19:47

Well done @harriethoyle! Kitchen closed at around 700 here, bringing the two day total to 1200. It has been a hard B2B, so glad it's almost over!
How's everyone else doing?

emmsyg · 16/12/2022 22:00

It’s my one year Fastversary! Can’t believe I’ve stuck to something for a full year, I feel so much better and 30lb lighter than this time last year.

I’ve relaxed my fast day dinners recently so maybe need to be a little more careful to see the weight start to come off a bit faster, but I’m really happy, and don’t mind if it takes me another year to get the last stone off because this is so easy to sustain for me. I get to eat the things I like every week and that’s what makes this maintainable.

thanks for this thread, I drop in and out but find it so helpful, and no intentions of stopping fasting anytime soon!

beststepforward · 17/12/2022 15:42

Congratulations @emmsyg !!

I'm failing miserably. I've given up even trying. In Scotland and it's been -9 at its worst. Will reassess soon.

Enjoying reading for inspiration at least!

Chattycathydoll · 18/12/2022 11:20

Congrats @emmsyg ! Really is inspiring, that maybe this is going to work long term.

I did my 3 fasts, higher than usual even on fast days ~700 or so, plus sociable eating on other days so only lost 0.6lbs but it’s still a loss even with pizza and stuff so I’m taking it! Am going to 16:8 through the holidays except Xmas day and NYE. It’s damage limitation if nothing else!

emmsyg · 18/12/2022 11:59

Well done @Chattycathydoll and just keep plugging away@beststepforward - the first few weeks is the hardest and sometimes I actually look forward to a fast day now as it’s like my cleanse, especially after a heavy weekend!

At this time of year any loss is great - even if I have weeks where I don’t lose now, I just try and look at it pragmatically- I would have otherwise gained weight that week and I didn’t due to the fasts. Plus the additional health benefits. I haven’t been through the other posts so it’s probably been mentioned, but try watching Chris Hemsworth’s Limitless on Disney + if you have it - he does a 4 day fast and it puts 24hrs into perspective!

EatYourFive · 19/12/2022 09:21

Well done @emmsyg that's amazing! I had my fastversary back in November and I'm two stone lighter than back then..I seem to have hit a plaeteau now though and christmas is obviously not going to help! 😀But can't complain, it's nice to be safely back in size 10 clothing, just will have to try and not overdo it in the next two weeks.

harriethoyle · 19/12/2022 12:46

Fabulous @emmsyg - well done!

Anyone fasting with me today? Usual tiny sandwich and fishcake 😊 will probably be a b2b, we'll see

Kitchen closing on 637. Happy with that!

Fasting has completely fallen by the wayside due to a mix of not being in the office (train strikes) and not feeling so well last week. That said, despite being at home and within easy reach of snacks, I did have a couple of days last week where I skipped lunch (not really deliberately, just got caught up with other stuff, and suddenly it was 4pm, and then the children were back and it was all kids dinners/reading/shouting/bedtime and before I knew it it was time for dinner), so doing OK.

In the office tomorrow for the last time until January, but I need to leave early as Tesco are delivering The Big Shop (hopefully!), so will try for a mini and no booze. Can't remember the last time I weighed myself, but nothing feels tight or uncomfortable and I had to keep hitching up my running leggings this morning which feels like a good sign 😀

Chattycathydoll · 20/12/2022 11:20

Been invited to an event on the 28th January where I’ll meet some members of boyfriend‘s family I’ve never met before - wondering now how much I can lose by then to fit into a lovely dress I used to feel super confident in…

I’m struggling even to 16:8 with foodie friends around! But actually having this event on the horizon is good motivation.

harriethoyle · 20/12/2022 18:34

@SydneyCarton I think this time of year is damage limitation tbh 🤣

@Chattycathydoll I think events in the diary are great motivation. you got this!

Kitchen closing on 680 and last FD of 2022. 16:8 starts tomorrow!

SydneyCarton · 21/12/2022 12:45

@harriethoyle Best laid plans and all that..... Went out last night with friends to what I still think of as a gastropub, but which now seems to be called a "bar/kitchen", and ordered food to be told the kitchen had closed early Hmm. Was starving as I only had cheese and crackers for lunch in anticipation of a big pub dinner, so today I am definitely not doing a mini (also a bit hungover Grin)

Banking app alert for The Big Shop shows it as costing twenty quid less than the estimate, so I am now playing "Guess what they didn't have in stock" for the next few hours.....

Badlifeday · 01/01/2023 11:42

Happy new year everyone!

harriethoyle · 01/01/2023 15:17

Happy New Year @Badlifeday

See you all on Tuesday for my first FD of 2023!

👋
I'm too scared to go near my scales. I have managed two fast days between Xmas and NY so that's something, but have been eating my body weight in cheese and chocolate on the other days 😀

SydneyCarton · 01/01/2023 18:21

Happy New Year all! No fasting was done over Christmas and precious little exercise either, although I have been for a run today. Easing back in with 16:8 on Wednesday and Friday I think. DP and I have a rare day of term time annual leave on Friday and we’re going to the cinema and then for a meal so will fast in the morning. Planning to run Tuesday and Thursday so I’ll need some breakfast fuel!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 02/01/2023 07:39

Happy New Year everyone - I had Covid just before Christmas so didn't get in the fast days I wanted before Christmas and now feel very fat
Joining tomorrow 😬

absolutelyknackeredcow · 03/01/2023 06:54

Half a stone or 6lbs on Blush
Planning a b2b and a single this week to get most of it off
Who is joining

anoldcharter · 03/01/2023 10:11

Morning, can I join please? Did 5:2 about 4 years ago and it was great but I've not stuck to it and I'm now heavier than ever 😞 I've tried to restart it a few times over the last couple of years but failed miserably.

I am using the rest of this week to stick to around 1500 cals (tdee is 1850) and get my mind back into counting calories and cutting back and have planned first fast for Tues and Friday next week.

Really hoping motivation will stick, I'm perimenopausal and need to get on top on this, wish me luck....

Hope everyone has a good week 😊

harriethoyle · 03/01/2023 11:40

@absolutelyknackeredcow I see your 6 lbs and raise you my 7!! B2b today and tomorrow but then off on skiing holiday on Saturday... must remember that skiing is not a license to eat THE WORLD...!!

@anoldcharter rip the plaster off and do a FD this week. No point in delaying!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 03/01/2023 12:10

@harriethoyle ! Feel better now - thanks

harriethoyle · 03/01/2023 13:56

@absolutelyknackeredcow you're welcome!! I had HUGE fun for every single one of those pesky pounds too...!!
