Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Doing a FD here but struggling a bit - too many Christmas goodies hanging around the office and a Quality Street somehow fell into my mouth, plus feeling a bit cold-y and meh. Work drinks tomorrow so don't want to fast too much in case I fall over after 1 glass of wine. Might do some minis or 16:8 this week instead and concentrate on running a lot!

I had a whoosh overnight... 700g from target, just in time for 3 Christmas dinners in 3 days 🤣🙈 at least I'll look slinky in my frock!

I’ve honestly gone to pot this week, got a UTI which I couldn’t shake and it went for my kidneys. Haven’t been to the gym, haven’t fasted or counted calories. Got the right ABs, feeling more myself and now horrified by how off track I am! I was really unwell though. Had to take an unpaid day off which I can’t afford, but 0 hours contract so don’t get sick leave. My first day off since I started there in July. Realistically I don’t think I should be back yet, even wfh, I’m not with it but can’t afford more than one day so just trying to be normal as possible!

That sucks chatty. Hopefully with the right AB you’ll be feeling better soon. Same thing happened to me a few years ago now. It was awful!

Well done on that whoosh harriet! The scales have been kind to me too, but I’ve also got a few turkey dinners coming up. Not sure if I can face a FD today, but I’ll give it a go.

I had a b2b Tues and Wed this week, very needed as I've had a few meals out over the last week and the scale was not looking good. However, this morning it was back to normal. Is anyone hoping for miracles in Dec or just aiming to maintain? I've put on a stone over December before so staying the same weight might be miraculous in itself. Blush

Anyone fasting today?
I have yoghurt for a 2pm snack to see me through then fish for dinner. Trying to have same main meal as Mr F to keep this as easy as poss.
Feeling a bit sluggish this week, hoping the fast will help perk me up.

Next week, I am going b2b Monday Tuesday.

Will have soup at 12 and beef stirfry around 7pm

Antibiotics worked a treat, I’m feeling much better and have steeled myself to resist the Christmas junk. I‘m already looking forward to my lunch though! Home made chicken soup.

This week I’m planning to fast Monday, Tuesday and Thursday as well just because I know I won’t be able to do any over Christmas. I’m seeing a lot of friends and they’re all fantastic cooks!

Day 1 of b2b for me too. It's harder when it's cold. I want hot milky coffees. Having soup for lunch and a small curry for dinner. Should be under 600.

The Christmas chocolate eating hasn't begun yet, and I passed on a cheeseboard this weekend. Basically a saint. Halo

Checking back in! Been off the fasts for over 2 weeks as we were hit with a nasty viral.. feeling better but still bunged up.

Hoping to fast tomorrow. Was going to try today but it's -5 here and I just couldn't face it! Not been drinking much water either..

It really is so much harder when it's cold, it's so easy to fill yourself with cold sparkling water in the summer to keep going. I'm already struggling and it's only lunch time, wondering if B2B is too ambitious after a small break from fasting and if I should just do two separate days this week.

I really want a giant frothy latte now and some M&S choc biscuits!

Hello everyone how are you getting on? I have struggled today, already had my dinner, a fishcake, and kitchen is therefore closing at 498.

I'm not sure I have it in me to do a B2B, so cold and hungry. Will see how I feel in the morning.

I decided to persevere! Came to the office today where the heating is on so hoping to get through day 2. I was pretty ready to give in last night and only do a single fast but felt stronger this morning, no doubt helped by the heating and hot shower.
Day 2 B2B let's do it!!

I was so happy at the start of the weekend having lost two more pounds which brought me to a personal best - weighed myself two days later and had gained three!! 🤦🏼‍♀️
Nibbling biscuits today and nothing is satisfying me. Pah.
Hope everyone else is having more success! Any plans for how to deal with Christmas?

I am very much looking forward to breakfast tomorrow. But a small tomato risotto for dinner this evening and lots of hot teas today. Might have lemon and ginger to try and warm me up a bit.
