Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

I did a single fast yesterday, finished at 450 but had a work thing today so no B2B. Will do another single on Thursday and no fast next week as will be travelling for work.
Fasting is so much easier when the weather is warm, really struggling when it's cold and damp like this.
Hope you have managed to get through today @harriethoyle and @SydneyCarton and whoever else was fasting.

harriethoyle · 29/11/2022 13:15

@Chattycathydoll millionaire's doughnut sounds INCREDIBLE

Not gonna lie, it was… and so was the pad Thai for dinner, omg. Probably best Thai food I’ve ever had, I’m not normally a fan but he chose the place this week and it was so so good.
Was it worth seeing 3 extra pounds on the scale this week? Maybe 😂

harriethoyle · 29/11/2022 19:28

@EatYourFive kitchen closing on 652 which gives 1250 across both days. Happy enough with that! Will do a third on Thursday to undo last weekend's damage 😆

harriethoyle · 29/11/2022 19:29

How did you get on @SydneyCarton ? I found today really hard...

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 29/11/2022 19:39

Thanks @EatYourFive @harriethoyle I have to confess to some interactions with the biscuit tin 😬The DC were having hot chocolate and biscuits and I couldn’t resist. Will probably end up being a mini as we have some fish and chips type ready meals that need eating. How did you get on?

SydneyCarton · 29/11/2022 19:40

Sorry, just saw 652, great work especially in the cold!

FB546 · 30/11/2022 16:50

Lots of great updates! We had a short city break, going to fast tomorrow and then get back on 2 per week next week. Want to keep some routine through the festive season.

Did keep to the Glucose Goddess principles when away and feel better for it.

FB546 · 30/11/2022 16:53

Oh, I accidentally clicked on page 28 of the topic, rather than # 13 of the current one. It was a good read on the train! Are any of the original gang still around?

harriethoyle · 01/12/2022 08:57

I was supposed to be fasting today but I am so tired, grumpy and generally fragile that I'm not going to. I'll aim for a mini tomorrow as I'm travelling after work to see the dsd so won't be boozing or eating to excess...

Absolutely manic day yesterday, ended up being just barely 400 which I’m fine with as I had so much earlier in the week. No b2b though as I need to replenish my stocks of protein for muscle gain! Fat % to muscle % has been going in the right direction and today I lifted my PB at the gym (only 20lbs on the multipress machine but given my starting point it’s huge for me). Today is crazy at work though so no snack temptation has happened, because I haven’t had time!!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 02/12/2022 15:54

A Friday fast - struggling as haven't been well all week

EatYourFive · 02/12/2022 17:40

@absolutelyknackeredcow well done, I usually give up at the first sign of illness so impressed you even give it a try when poorly!

I only managed one fast day this week but luckily have not gained any weight. December is going to be tricky, travelling to Asia for work next week so will be incredibly busy and jet-lagged (plus surrounded by lovely food someone else is paying for) so no fasting. Then just one more week of work and I'm off for a couple of weeks. Not going away for Christmas but have some family coming over which usually means plenty of drink and food... think my goal for December is to maintain my current weight, don't think losing any is realistic...

What's every one else planning for December? Any tips how to prevent yourself from overdoing it? Think last year I put on 4 kg over the festive period...

harriethoyle · 02/12/2022 18:54

I'm staying as normal in w/c in that I'll do 2 or 3 fasts then all bets are off until January 3rd. I'll probably IF between 28th -3rd...

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 02/12/2022 18:54

In w/c 19th December that should say!

OP posts:
absolutelyknackeredcow · 02/12/2022 19:38

I was supposed to be fasting on Tuesday and there was honestly no way I could have done anything
I am planning three fasts next week - 1 b2b and one single
Then two singles the following week and then b2b 19/20th Dec
I might do one in between Xmas and NY but we will see

FB546 · 04/12/2022 21:48

Fasting tomorrow, Monday, then planning Friday again. Hope everyone had a great weekend. Done my menu plan and going with a small yoghurt for 'lunch' then a chick pea & chicken korma with micro rice for dinner.

Badlifeday · 05/12/2022 06:55

I'm going through my calendar looking for any "absolutely need to eat" days and then trying to work out when I can fast around them! Plus, want a few days off over Christmas but not too many.
Lost two pounds this week so finally broken out of my plateau so don't really want to stop now (but can I resist a cheese and chocolate fest? I cannot).

harriethoyle · 05/12/2022 13:01

I forgot to check in this morning!! @FB546 we can keep each other on the straight and narrow

I am b2b today and tomorrow. No other days I can fast this week so I am going to intermittent fast (ie not eat before 12 if possible) Thursday through Sunday to try and limit the damage...

OP posts:
absolutelyknackeredcow · 05/12/2022 18:42

@harriethoyle I'm with you but starving. Late night last night and it's taking it's toil.
Will have to see if I can manage a b2b - otherwise it will be today and Friday

FB546 · 05/12/2022 19:34

Great idea @Badlifeday, esp in the run up to Christmas.

Hope it's been a good one @harriethoyle

Will try a b2b next week, maybe Tues Wed.

harriethoyle · 05/12/2022 20:01

@absolutelyknackeredcow same - I slept appallingly last night and it's soooo tough when you're tired. Kitchen closing here on 633. Same again tomorrow all being well!

OP posts:
absolutelyknackeredcow · 06/12/2022 09:03

Morning all fasters - terrible drop overnight despite the tough fast. Nearly gave up but managed to push on for the second day @harriethoyle - how are you doing ?

harriethoyle · 06/12/2022 10:34

Here for day two @absolutelyknackeredcow but scales were 300 grams UP this morning which is HUGELY vexing... It better whoosh off tonight or there'll be a tantrum!

PrestonNorthHen · 06/12/2022 10:42

It's gone a bit pear shaped here as fell heavily while running and have injured myself.
Am on heavy duty painkillers that have to be taken with food so have swapped to 16:8 on days off only as need to be able to work, I manage to hobble about until lunch time on days off and take painkillers then.
Still down 2.5 kgs so it's going sloooow but going so I'm happy with that.

Badlifeday · 06/12/2022 12:58

Sorry to hear that - hope you have a quick recover! Flowers
