Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

NFD for me yesterday and today. Focusing on sugars and keeping to real food. Feeling better for it, I don't have any of the main meno symptoms, my gut can't eat what it used to. Pasta, bread, sweet things now break me!

Skyr yog, 2 plums for breakfast, lunch was a salad with one egg, feta, tomatoes, cucumber and chickpeas. Couple of rice cakes for later and then porridge tonight before the gym. FD tomorrow. Might even weigh myself on Saturday. 😀

Hope everyone is having a great day.

harriethoyle · 24/11/2022 15:42

I'm huuungry! aiming to be home by 6.30 and eating by 7. It feels like YEARS away!

Hope your enjoyed your dinner Harriet! Well deserved by the sounds of it.

im planning on fasting tomorrow. Today and yesterday haven’t been the next NFD. I blame lack of sleep. Sick kids and a restless puppy to be specific. I hit the wine, bread and sugar. Tomorrow is another day.

FB546 · 25/11/2022 07:19

I'll join you today @Onehappymam
Fish for dinner and a couple of rice cakes with a few crumbs of feta and tomato for lunch. Will come in 510.

Have a great day everyone, especially the fasters!

harriethoyle · 25/11/2022 08:13

Good luck @Onehappymam and @FB546

I woke up starving at 2am 😆 but managed to get back to sleep until my giant crumpet this morning 😊 happy Friday!

Onehappymam · 25/11/2022 08:40

Good luck @FB546 .

I’m currently sitting in my pyjamas, scrolling through MN. I’m supposed to be doing a workout! It’s so tough to get motivated in the morning when it’s cold and dark.

Badlifeday · 25/11/2022 12:06

I'm fasting. Can't say Friday is the easiest day for it! Kids will want a take away

PrestonNorthHen · 25/11/2022 16:38

FD today
Scrambled egg for lunch, I needed something hot.
Small portion fish pie and broccoli 🥦 for dinner.
600 cals.
Don't feel hungry at all.
1.5 kg down in past 2 weeks

Twoshoesnewshoes · 26/11/2022 09:18

Hello

can I join? I have around 10lb to lose- I used 5:2 several years ago and lost weight quite effectively but when I tried again a couple of years ago nothing seemed to shift?
anyway, I’m giving it another go!

FB546 · 26/11/2022 18:33

Hi to @Twoshoesnewshoes

One thing I'm learning this time is that the healthier (less sugary, carby) the NFDs are, the easier the FDs are, less of a come down perhaps.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 27/11/2022 13:26

Sorry - didn't bother checking in as there are usually no Friday fasters
I did a triple last week including Friday and I'm fasting today and Tuesday
Was planning a Friday this week too but I might not bother as TOTM bloat seems to have meant that despite the three fasts the scales haven't dropped at all

harriethoyle · 28/11/2022 09:24

Morning all! Anyone joining me today? I'm doing my usual Monday-Tuesday b2b...

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 28/11/2022 09:25

I bet you'll have a sudden whoosh @absolutelyknackeredcow... I always do when the scales get stuck!

OP posts:
absolutelyknackeredcow · 28/11/2022 10:03

Thanks @harriethoyle - bloody hope so. It's so hard to fast on a Friday and Sunday and then to get no progress is depressing
Good luck for your b2b - will join you tomorrow

harriethoyle · 28/11/2022 15:11

Yes, I bet @absolutelyknackeredcow . I'd be gnashing my teeth!

I forgot to weigh myself this morning so won't know my progress. I'm starving today... anyone else find fasting in the cold weather SO much harder?!

OP posts:
Onehappymam · 28/11/2022 16:27

FD for me today. I’m up 7lbs since Saturday, so it’s well needed.

I can’t believe how cold it is today! The weathers taken a real turn here.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 28/11/2022 17:32

I’m on FD today, yes it’s cold and I want to eat apple crumble and hibernate!

Onehappymam · 28/11/2022 18:28

Oooo I’d love some of that crumble too, with custard!

Still in my workout clothes - but haven’t done the workout yet. Still psyching myself up!

harriethoyle · 28/11/2022 19:01

Same @Onehappymam and please can I have a scoop of ice cream as well as custard @Twoshoesnewshoes ?!

Kitchen closing here on 589. Back again tomorrow unless I freeze to death 🤭

OP posts:
Onehappymam · 29/11/2022 08:27

Back again for day 2.

Never got round to that workout yesterday. Maybe today!

harriethoyle · 29/11/2022 09:09

Me too @Onehappymam - already freezing, grumpy and starving 😆🙈

FD today. Had a great weekend but totally went overboard on eating for the first time in ages, all started when he bought me a millionaires doughnut and went downhill from there. Haven’t fasted, haven’t calorie counted, really frustrating as I was so close to a healthy bmi and have now put weight back on! FD today & Thursday this week, responsible eating the rest of the week.

harriethoyle · 29/11/2022 13:15

@Chattycathydoll millionaire's doughnut sounds INCREDIBLE

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 29/11/2022 15:08

FD here and hanging in OK for now. Usually, I would do another one tomorrow, but we have after work drinks with some colleagues I haven't seen for a while so don't want to miss out on that. Equally don't want to eat so little I fall over after one sip 😬Might try a mini with a normal breakfast, skip lunch and stick to low-cal drink options - I can't stay for long in any event so no real opportunity to overdo it.

Onehappymam · 29/11/2022 15:30

Oh well, I caved. FD was a no go. Was up through the night with sick kids - again! Broken sleep is always such a challenge.

Tomorrow is another day I suppose!
