Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Well done @absolutelyknackeredcow ! Sainthood is yours!

I'm with you @EatYourFive 😊 day 2 b2b and second of the 3 fd I'm aiming for this week

I’m in today- day 2 b2b as well! Everyone’s doing so well, love to see it!

SydneyCarton · 22/11/2022 15:17

Day 1 of b2b and going okay so far, work is busy which always helps. Nothing planned for dinner which is probably a bad thing but there are some prawns in the fridge which could go in a salad, and with half a thin crust pizza that comes in about 600 calories 😋

harriethoyle · 22/11/2022 15:38

I've had my usual teeny sandwich and I am HUNGRY and at least 3 hours away from dinner... Roll on fishcake time! 😂

Going ok so far, have once again skipped lunch so can have a decent dinner. It's getting a bit chilly now during the day when I work from home, makes it harder to drink lots of water to keep hunger away. I find fasting so much easier when it's warm, should probably learn to like things like peppermint tea again.

I drink either Teapigs green tea with peach or any of the warming Pukka ones.I just make the teabags last a few cups.
Very warming !

FD today
Made red pepper, carrot and lentil soup, had a couple of crackers to stop gurgling .
Dinner is roast chicken with lots of veg .
Should be about 600 cals.
Taking the rest of the soup with a roast chicken and cranberry sandwich for lunch tomorrow.
Will weigh at the gym in the morning

EatYourFive · 22/11/2022 18:25

@PrestonNorthHen thanks will look up teapigs. I used to drink herbal teas, just twinings and such, but really went off them during my second pregnancy and haven't been able to get into them again. My youngest is now six so perhaps it's time to give another brand a go!

Kitchen closed at around 600, making the two day total 1100, pleased with that.

FB546 · 22/11/2022 19:27

Some great results.

NFD today, no calorie counting but was sensible.

My version of overnight oats for breakfast made with plums, home made veg soup for lunch with a Pret tuna salad then a chicken & chickpea korma (sauce from a jar but nice!) With 1/2 pkt of basmati rice. Then a couple of spoons of Skyr yohgurt.

NFD again tomorrow, plan to bookend the week with fasts on Monday and Friday.

FB546 · 22/11/2022 19:30

Oh, and I've just finished reading the Glucose Goddess so hoping the advice will help flatten the spikes and make the NFDs better and not undo the benefits of the FD.

harriethoyle · 22/11/2022 19:55

Kitchen closing here on 485, giving 1190 for the b2b. Happy with that and EXCITED about tomorrow morning's giant crumpet 😆

SydneyCarton · 22/11/2022 21:26

Kitchen closed on 634, couple of mini pork pies with salad, and a few rich tea fingers with a cup of tea.

Chattycathydoll · 22/11/2022 22:52

Kitchen closed on 444, love the coincidence numbers like that!!
Bit useless in the gym though- but it takes longer to feel good in working out than in normal life after getting over a cold.

Badlifeday · 23/11/2022 06:49

Fasting today. Woke up this morning feeling sick having consumed so much cheese yesterday Sad almost looking forward to the fast!

harriethoyle · 23/11/2022 07:50

That's an excellent FD @Chattycathydoll 😊

Good luck today @Badlifeday !

Happy to report my giant breakfast crumpet was amazing 😆

Good luck with day 2 of b2b @SydneyCarton shakes pom poms

SydneyCarton · 23/11/2022 09:35

Thanks @harriethoyle, glad the giant crumpet lived up to expectations! I have regular ones for breakfast tomorrow if they haven’t gone stale 😬

harriethoyle · 23/11/2022 09:49

@SydneyCarton crumpets freeze really well if you have any that are close to their best before...

Solderingon · 23/11/2022 12:48

FD for me too today. Soup for lunch and an egg on toast for dinner. Not wildly exciting, but not every meal needs to be.

Chattycathydoll · 23/11/2022 15:36

Thanks @harriethoyle !
@Badlifeday i always find it even more motivating when you feel you’ve overdone it on a nfd- you’ll smash it today :)

Chattycathydoll · 23/11/2022 15:39

Roasting a chicken for dinner today, got it in the yellow sticker section. Going to stick some veg in the pan so it’s all cooked together because I hate washing up and like to make life simple, then will use the leftovers in tomorrow’s curry and make broth from the carcass for future fast days. Efficiency!

SydneyCarton · 23/11/2022 21:25

Finished today on 1100, went a bit overboard (crumpets may have been involved 🤣), which makes 1700 in total for the b2b.

harriethoyle · 24/11/2022 07:49

How do you eat yours @SydneyCarton ? I'm toasted with lashings of butter and either marmite or Bovril...

Anyone joining me in a FD today?

OP posts:
SydneyCarton · 24/11/2022 08:57

@harriethoyle I like them well toasted (almost burnt) so the tops are crunchy, then tons of butter 😋. I do like marmite but only on toast (also with lots of butter!)

Good luck with today’s FD!

harriethoyle · 24/11/2022 09:21

Yes I agree with crunchy top @SydneyCarton ... Roll on breakfast tomorrow! 😂

Chattycathydoll · 24/11/2022 10:59

Another NFD but I typically stick to 16:8 anyway so I don’t go overboard and eat back everything I lost on FD. Have a fairly boring lunch planned but really looking forward to my curry and rice later! Only a couple of lbs overweight now so feeling very determined.
