Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Did a marathon swim/ water jogging session and topped 15,000 steps running around at work.

1.5 kg down 😊

Hello everyone! (shuffles in sheepishly)

I managed a fast day last Friday 🥳 and planning another this Friday... Will need your help to make it happen.

Still got huge amounts of life crap happening so I've been excusing the lack of fasts and consumption of crap 🙄 but weight is creeping back on 😭

Gone back to mainlining bread, which makes me feel sluggish and awful - so that is going to have to stop.

Tomorrow will be a bread-free 16:8 (ish) scenario, and then full fast on Friday with lentil soup if I find it impossible to get through the whole day!

First FD in quite a while, I think I went one cup of tea over my 500 Cals. But I'll take that.
Not sure when is best for FD 2 this week. Maybe Friday, means no fish and chips which can only be a good thing!
Last week I did one of those full body assessments where a machine measures all your internal fat, and I have 8kg to lose. Which is a lot more than I thought, so I'm back on it. 2x FD and then careful on the weekdays and a little more relaxed on the weekends. And exercise 5x a week.
Just sharing to keep me accountable really.

I’m fasting today, really trying to focus on my protein intake to maintain muscle progress so my calories today will be from protein shake & Greek yoghurt. DD was home sick from school the last 2 days which always throws me for a loop, especially as I normally do my heaviest gym day on a Wednesday. Still managed to keep my cals an okay amount and stick with 16:8 but my bread to nutrition ratio was very off!!

Well done @harriethoyle! I ended up nor fasting yesterday, had too much food in the house that needed eating! 😀
Will be back on Monday for a B2B, no loss this week so may have to introduce that third FD...

At the moment I am not finding that the third FD is taking any weight off save for the half pound I tend to put on, on my NFD between b2b and FD3. It's a bit frustrating because I find the 3FD effortful! But at least it's meaning I end the week at a lower weight than I start it... (before putting it all back on with delicious wine)

Only did one full fast day and one gym day this week as DD gave me her cold and didn’t feel up to it. Stuck to circadian fasting (13hr) rather than 16:8 and did some light resistance band exercises. I find it works better to adjust rules rather than get rid of them completely, like 13 hour fasts aren’t major but it keeps me in the mindset even when I’m feeling stuffy and blah. I’ve lost barely 1/2lb so not as much as usual but I can’t expect to lose as much as when I do 5:2, 16:8 otherwise why bother! It’s not a gain so it’s fine.

Hello, can I join you? Loved reading the thread and the back catalogue. I fasted in 2020 and did really well despite lockdowns. Need some accountability and to get past some bad habits. Doing this for health and 7lbs. Fasting today and should come in on the 500 with home made veg soup and then a small home made beef & lentil chilli with rice. Today will be fine, tomorrow is the challenge!

I'm aslo fasting today, day 1 b2b. Only had (milky) coffee and a clementine so far today. Will be having some homemade veg soup for dinner, should be finishing at under 500 today so can have some extra tomorrow.

Successful fast day, never eat in the evening, so the kitchen has closed.
Focus is not undoing the good work tomorrow. Menu plan done.
I have a very sore stomach from a few days of stress and sugar excess, will let that settle and weigh in next week. Hope everyone else has a good day.

Kitchen closed at 436, day one of b2b. Over the cold and back on it this week, gym tomorrow, focussing on strength training. Wednesday will be cardio day. Friday mixed. Got a date night planned this weekend as DD at her dad’s for the first time in weeks, going to try to enjoy it without going mad!
