Blood sugar diet and fast800 support thread #18

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/03/2020 17:03

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

I give up!

bluepixie · 06/05/2020 21:17

Making it on sat it looks amazing. Any tips or alterations required? Can’t wait!
My dh is eating a creme egg next to me!!!!!!!!!!! I don’t even like them but I want to bite it off him!

whensmynexthol1day · 06/05/2020 21:24

Ended on 848kcal and 30g carbs

@NathanNathan that courgette dish sounds nice- you've reminded me of the most amazing Indian pea dish I used to make which used cream and tomato purée plus spices. Amazing comfort food. probably too carby with peas for this diet but may try it with courgettes and maybe spinach as an alternative? Going to add that to my list! Thanks!

whensmynexthol1day · 06/05/2020 21:27

@agteacht that chocolate tart sounds amazing. Do you reckon you could use one of the pizza bases as a base (obviously it wouldn't have sides then) - is it just the same stuff as the unrolled stuff?

My problem would be just eating one portion!

bluepixie · 06/05/2020 21:38

@agteacht which sweetener did u use?

I grill
My courgettes And dip them into hummus

Yum!

NathanNathan · 06/05/2020 21:50

Glad everyone is enjoying the courgette options, I like the idea of them dipped in hummus!

These desert sound great. I can't trust myself yet.... soon hopefully!

waterproofed · 06/05/2020 21:52

@NathanNathan that courgette dish sounds wonderful. I'll try it this week.

@thenewaveragebear1983 that is a very good looking dinner.

@Whattheladybirdsaidnext good news on avoiding chips!

@agteacht oh wow, that low carb tart looks amazing! I might have to buy sweetener just for that.

I had some home made fish paste for supper - 100g smoked mackerel, a piece of cooked cod (80g), cream cheese and finely chopped red onion, all mixed in a bowl. 400kcal and deliciously filling.

Closing the kitchen today at 807kcal and 26g of carbs.

Any recommendations on getting more fibre in the diet without increasing the carbs?

I had some bad news at work today and felt a sweet craving for the first time in weeks. Nothing major, just a promotion that is postponed due to Covid. I dealt with it by keeping mindful - acknowledging I was sad and understanding my body was looking for a familiar sweet fix. This took the urgency away and after a few minutes I was fine - still disappointed but not looking for a fix that could not fix the news.

But I want to keep positive, so today I am feeling grateful the lockdown is making this diet very easy. No going out, no friends over for dinner and I can only eat what I can buy and make.

agteacht · 06/05/2020 21:52

It's amazing you won't regret making it! And so easy!

What pizza base do you mean @whensmynexthol1day ? The lo-dough? Mine came up the sides a bit so it was fine
Having only one portion is tricky... but it does make quite a lot! And also even if you over-indulge it's low carb..

@Cream123 adjustments - I didn't have orange extract so used vanilla, you could probably do it without either if you don't have it.

Sweetener - i used this one because I use it anyway (as an aside would highly recommend, tastes just like sugar) - www.amazon.co.uk/Natural-Erythritol-Granulated-Calorie-Replacement/dp/B01BDTLL7W

But I'm sure any sweetener will do.

I also added some fruit (frozen raspberries) into it because I have also made this version of the tart which is also yum but if you are a chocolate lover like me then the choc one wins

lodough.co/blogs/recipes/low-calorie-raspberry-custard-tart

whensmynexthol1day · 06/05/2020 21:56

@agteacht yes sorry I meant the lo- dough one . Wasn't sure if the pizza base and the blocks of lo dough are effectively the same thing
Did it taste orangey enough with just the orange zest then?

agteacht · 06/05/2020 22:04

Ah sorry - I just have the bases and they come flat so it's just like a layer under the tart.

To be honest because I added the raspberries it was more like a chocolate and raspberry tart rather than orange.

I'm going to have to make another one tomorrow now you guys have got me craving it 😂

NathanNathan · 06/05/2020 22:07

That sweetener looks like witchcraft!! Good witchcraft Smile

whensmynexthol1day · 06/05/2020 22:10

@agteacht ok cool- thanks. I've just ordered the sweetener and orange essence- arriving next week and quite excited! I haven't eaten a single bit of chocolate since I started this so quite excited. Feels like a delayed Easter treat!

Whereisthewine · 06/05/2020 22:17

Can I join please? 12st and heaviest I've ever been. Bought the Michael Mosley book a while ago so it's gathered some dust, but after exercising pretty much daily during lockdown and shifting zero weight, I need to do something. I'm useless with weighing ingredients, so would be great to get daily meal ideas Smile

agteacht · 06/05/2020 22:18

Oh the sweetener is mega. DH now has it in his tea every day and can't tell the difference. Not cheap compared to a bag of sugar mind you! but I think it's worth it. As I understand it it is polyols which you don't digest so basically no need to worry about adding it where you need to.

agteacht · 06/05/2020 22:19

@whensmynexthol1day ohhh I'm excited for you! Let me know 😊

waterproofed · 06/05/2020 22:26

@Whereisthewine welcome! Half the food I make on this diet comes from this thread. The book also has some handy meal ideas.

@agteacht and @whensmynexthol1day I too just put an order through for the sweetener and other ingredients. Very excited to make this with the kids - I love baking.

bluepixie · 06/05/2020 22:29

I just ordered it too!!! Plus added orange flavouring to my tesco order

Sounds like we all having a choc tart party this weekend! All post pics !!! :)

agteacht · 06/05/2020 22:42

Hahaha I hope to god you all like it 😂

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/05/2020 07:26

Morning all.

Choc tart looks lovely and great for a treat but do be mindful of artificial sweeteners as they affect your insulin control even though they don't technically raise your blood sugars. I have a diabetes cookbook that has loads of recipes that use erythritol but bear in mind it's different for type one diabetics because they administer their own insulin based entirely on blood sugar whereas our bodies do not. Plus, if it was me I'd be eating that whole thing and that's no good for anyone....!!

Yesterday was weird for me. I couldn't seem to stop grazing but I didn't eat any sugar, just bsd food. Maintained this morning.
Anyone else dreading the weekend? I'm only just getting back on track, I don't want another weekend of drinking and eating rubbish! Dh wants to bbq and as he is finding work stressful he wants to unwind with a glass of wine but I would happily not drink this weekend. I feel so unhealthy!

Today I am doing a short run, and will do some hiit /weights with the kids later too. As always, aiming to fast as long as I can this morning. Lunch will be a courgette 'pasta' bake with tuna; dinner will be chicken tikka massala (my ds loves to cook this so we have it every week pretty much, he's only 7)

@waterproofed that fish paste sounds amazing. Definitely on my list!
You asked about fibre? It's hard to add fibre without adding carbs as fibre is carbs (if you're counting 50g total carbs?) but it's not necessarily bad. That's why I do try to stress the fact that 50g is not actually a 'cornerstone' of the plan. Plenty of veg, eat seeds/flaxseed/chia seeds etc, plenty of water. In nature, fructose and fibre go hand in hand so you will find the fibre you need to digest the fructose - provided you eat the food in its natural state. I've been making a little pot of chia/flaxseed and having it each day (small jam jar, tsp chia, Tbsp flax, 100 ml soy milk, frozen berries) and that seems to help. You need around 14g per 1000c of food, so around 10g per day on an 800 cals day. Unless you are feeling especially constipated then I wouldn't worry too much, it can sometimes just be that as you are eating so much less food and as it's so nutritious, there isn't the 'waste' that we're used to. (Sorry, tmi Grin)

OP posts:
whensmynexthol1day · 07/05/2020 07:54

@thenewaveragebear that's reassuring about the fibre- I hadn't thought about it in the context of how many fewer calories we are eating - 10g is far more achievable than the 25g I thought I was supposed to be having!

Did you mean 1tsp or 1tbsp chia seeds in your recipe? I've bought some chia seeds for fibre so was going to try this out!

whensmynexthol1day · 07/05/2020 07:57

Oh and @waterproofed - i started back on the rowing machine this week (just 15 mins a day- so a slow start but better than nothing!) and that has made a huge difference to how bloated/constipated I feel and my bowel movements generally (sorry tmi!) so I would say fibre/water and exercise are all probably equally important?

bluepixie · 07/05/2020 08:04

@whensmynexthol1day I recommend almond flour chia and flaxseed porridge with some berries. It’s literally delicious and comes in at 200 cals and 4.5g carbs for my portion. I find those days I’m not constipated and they r pretty good for fibre

Agree in ideal world no sweetness. But if u had seen the pudding I was going to eat on sat for my evening off.....versus the pudding I’m now making. This is def the better of 2 evils!

Me and ds made a sugar free carrot cake yest. Was dates to sweeten. Really quite tasty!

bluepixie · 07/05/2020 08:04

Ps I literally only had a bite of it!

bluepixie · 07/05/2020 08:04

Anyone got any good ideas of what to do with coconut flour?
