Blood sugar diet and fast800 support thread #18

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

Kimlek still my twin :)
I’m 11 today and intent on getting it off in 1/2 days
Ultra low carb today

bluepixie · 26/04/2020 16:38

Waaaa my scales broke
Any ideas how much a medium/large aubergine weighs? Online suggesting 300-400 so I’ll go with 400g? Making a melazane for my work lunches next week!

CiorstanMI · 26/04/2020 18:20

Day 49 (7 weeks down woohoo!) and closing the kitchen at 872 calories and 38g carbs.

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 26/04/2020 19:26

Finished on 799 cal and 31g carbs.

waterproofed · 26/04/2020 19:59

@Cream123 sorry, no idea about aubergines, but the online estimate you found seems fair.

@CiorstanMI week 7, that’s fantastic.

I struggled with my mood today (I miss people I don’t live with!!) and struggled not to eat through it, but a walk sorted me out. I might be well enough for a run tomorrow.

Closing the kitchen at 798kcal and 32g of carbs.

IgglePiggleNotInBed · 26/04/2020 21:08

Ugh ended up having today "off" too and feel so sluggish when I'm not walking 5k a day! Have made a chilli at 330 cals per portion and have 4 of those, so going to do an 18hr fast now and I'm very much looking forward to a walk with the baby tomorrow. Hope everyone has had a lovely weekend

agteacht · 26/04/2020 22:02

Welcome @RedLipsAndRosyCheeks
Things that have helped me (I'm on week 5) which I wouldn't normally have bought:

Almond flour (I buy on amazon) - for porridge and cooking
Coconut flour - for cooking
Ground flaxseed - for porridge
Erythritol (sweetener, tastes just like sugar - also amazon)
Babybels or if in Sainsbury's their snacking cheese are just as nice and cheaper
Almond milk - for porridge
Lactose-free milk - for my coffee
Heck chicken sausages - very low cal, good snack
Cauliflower - now make cauli rice v often
Celeriac - another good carb substitute
Frozen berries
90% / 85% Lindt chocolate - for treat

Hope of help x

agteacht · 26/04/2020 22:03

Well done @CiorstanMI for finishing week 7. So now I need to know what you plan to do after week 8?!!

LarryUnderwood · 26/04/2020 22:09

Hello, can I join? Starting this tomorrow with a week of easing myself in - have planned a week's worth of meals totalling around 900-1050 cals. Aim to reduce this to average 800 for the following week. What do you all find about doing exercise while on this plan? I'm hoping to get back into running after several months of inactivity (I used to run 5-10k a few times a week, but haven't run at all since last summer). Weight has rocketed in the last year so I really want to get results but also need to move a lot more. Does this low calorie diet result in lack of energy?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 26/04/2020 22:35

Hi everyone. Welcome newbies

Thanks for your condolences; it would be terribly disingenuous of me to suggest I was desperately sad due to Ged's death, but my Dd is a little shell shocked and it's very weird in a split family when your child's other family is suffering. It's been a weird and emotional weekend.Thanksbut thank you for caring

Coming back tomorrow ready to go. Last week was a total write off. I'm a terrible leader on this thread right now, you're all so much more disciplined than me but I promise to myself that I will be a good influence this week

Also: searched for my remaining lo-dough wrap today and I cannot for the life of me remember where it is! I wouldn't mind but they are sooooo expensive!!

Will menu plan tomorrow also, we desperately need fresh salad and veg and eggs, so might try a local farm shop rather than Tesco/Asda

Welcome @LarryUnderwood - no quite the opposite. From about day 3 I found my energy increased. Basically you don't get the peaks and troughs you would normally get from carbs. I do a 30 min spin session on my bike each day and normally 10k steps with the buggy. If I'm honest I probably would be less inclined to do so normally but this way of eating encourages me!!

agteacht · 26/04/2020 23:20

@thenewaveragebear1983 it must be such a strange situation to find yourself in. Really feel for you. Be kind to yourself x

RedLipsAndRosyCheeks · 27/04/2020 06:40

Thank you @agteacht

For simplicity I'm doing one of the 3 meals a day plans from the book. I'm the cook in the house and it was such a relief to not have to plan my food for a week!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/04/2020 08:47

@Cream123 could you post the recipe for your almond flour porridge please?

OP posts:
LarryUnderwood · 27/04/2020 09:18

Thank you @agteacht. Day 1, morning 1. 30 minute jog/walk done. Meal plan printed and on the fridge, husband under strict instructions to hide/lock away all the treat food (I am not good at maintaining resolve in the evenings when I know there's crisps in the house).

Weighed in at 11st 5/72kg. Ultimate aim is to reach 60kg (I'm 5'5") but getting to 65kg would be amazing. Will be browsing through this thread for tips.

agteacht · 27/04/2020 09:47

@Cream123 it's your recipe now see what you've done there 😂

@thenewaveragebear1983 2tbsp of almond flour, 2tbsp of ground flaxseed, 120ml almond milk, some berries of your choice

Cream adds in chia seeds, I haven't tried that.

bluepixie · 27/04/2020 10:05

Yes that’s in @agteacht
It’s yummy @thenewaveragebear1983

Back on it today. Won’t mention wot scales said today after 3 days off plan. Surely it will be off quick!
Good today
2 eggs am
Home made melazane lunch
Marinated chicken breast and brocolli dinner

thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/04/2020 11:30

Oh sorry @agteacht ! Well I bought almond flour, flaxseed, soy milk. I have berries. I have chia. Do you cook it or do you do like overnight oats (which is also yummy) and leave to soak overnight.

Got home from Tesco, to find dh's company have sent him a luxury box of hotel chocolat. I have banned him from eating them around me. Life is simply not fair is it???

I'm now over a week overdue my period and have felt bloated and uncomfortable all night. It's very annoying, plus I know when it does arrive it will be horrific. Its not POAS time though, I can track back to the week I should have ovulated I did a lot of exercise and that does delay ovulation so therefore delays everything else.

OP posts:
bluepixie · 27/04/2020 12:07

Oh @thenewaveragebear1983 ! Are u often delayed??

I put them all in pan and throw milk in same time and cook it a few mins. Keep adding the milk till I’m Happy with consistency. Mine is thick and gloopy! It doesn’t make much tbh but it’s filling.

bluepixie · 27/04/2020 12:08

Here’s mine from last week

thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/04/2020 12:59

@Cream123 nope I'm regular as clockwork except when I train for races and increase my running significantly (as I did around 3-4 weeks ago at the start of April so currently not concerned that it's 'something else') I might be worried in another week or so if it's still delayed!

OP posts:
thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/04/2020 13:10

Also if you look at this Fitbit heart rate graph, you can see heart rate peak at end of march (last AF) and then the April peak was delayed slightly so I'd expect to come on around 14 days after that peak (so 30 April/1 May) ?

Ok if u say so! Will await its arrival end of week!
Am hungry! Always hard on a Monday
Powering through with water!

Teaismynewfriend · 27/04/2020 13:56

Hello everyone
I'm checking in after a nice weekend with a few treats and undoubted weight gain. But I'm on plan for fast days Mon through Thursday this week. My youngest daughter goes back to school 2 weeks today, and that's quite a nice mini goal and motivation for me as that marks the beginning of getting out and about and seeing a few other people.
Today I am having just 2 meals, I skipped lunch. I normally eat 3 and if 2, would skip breakfast. So far I'm pretty hangry. I guess the downside of not doing it every day is that each week you have to get back through the pain barrier!!

bluepixie · 27/04/2020 14:21

@teaismynewfriend I’m the same. Downside of not doing it daily is that Monday is though. But I find by Wednesday I’m fine again. Having had a bad weekend keeps me in line in the week though. Just hope I still spend all this weekend loosing work I gained! And I do actually go under....really must only have one day off but it turned into two...or maybe 3 this weekend!
