Blood sugar diet and fast800 support thread #18

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/03/2020 17:03

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

Hi @mummyof2munchkins you could try incorporating more legumes into your diet, also veg has lots of fibre things like broccoli etc. The diet does allow for quinoa which is high protein and high fibre (I believe), maybe give those a go?

I’ve not really done the 800 fast. I’ve done more like 4/5 days on 2/3 days off where I haven’t watched wot I’ve eaten. So his other version. So it’s been slower and ups and downs post binge!
I’m changing tact to 6 on and only 1 off so I speed up things again. Tmrw is my day off so super good today!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/04/2020 07:34

Morning all. Despite a good day yesterday I did weigh in fairly high up my acceptable range this morning! I think previous terrible days are still catching up with me. I do intend to continue over the weekend but it's not always that simple as we know- however considering we are not going anywhere or doing anything and all days have just merged into "day" now I should really stop using that as an excuse! So, onwards. I actually feel much better today. A lot brighter. Still not come on, and feeling a bit bloated and uncomfortable as a result, but I'm hoping a run today will get things moving in that department.

@Cream123 nice one!

@mummyof2munchkins welcome. For fibre, as a rule of thumb you need around 14g per 1000 cals of food, so around 10g on an 800 calories day. You can get it from veg, leafy green is the optimum as it's higher fibre per gram; chia seeds/flax seeds (ground up in shakes or on yoghurt etc)
It's a shame that you feel bored with your food, but I can see how it's possible to get in a rut of choosing what works and sticking to it rather than risking variety. You can go wild with seasoning, adding anything you like to meat. I love salads so I am happy to eat them everyday, but I do like to have nice lettuce, avocado, sugar snaps, sauerkraut, mayo, seeds etc for variety and texture.

I sometimes make a big tray of toasted med veg, loads of seasoning, fresh basil (eg mushrooms, courgette, pepper, squash, onion, olives, garlic) olive oil - chop it into chunks and slow roast it, then store in the fridge cold and have a spoonful on salads. It keeps for several days and it's better after a day or two once it's all 'matured'!

I made a Waldorf style coleslaw the other day too because i find shop bought has too much mayo and has dairy and often sugar added. This was red cabbage, red onion, celery, a few nuts, and a few raisins (just a few in the whole bowl) and then mayonnaise. The whole thing was about 350 cals but it did 4 huge spoonfuls which served as my veg on 4 meals and it was so tasty.

I would definitely say don't let yourself get bored, there is so much delicious food out there we can have! Check out our recipe thread as well (it's linked in the opening post of this)

Welcome @mummyof2munchkins hopefully u will pick up some good recipes on here
I often write what I’m eating to give me focus for the day so maybe I can pass on a tip
Today

Heck Chicken sausages and spinach
Tuna mayo salad
Prawn red curry with brocolli rice
30 mls milk for 2 coffees
5 strawberries as a snack no babybel as coconut milk is high in sat fats and I’m worried I’m having too much of this!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/04/2020 07:55

@Cream123 , yeah it's annoying. I have just been working out my running stats and I notice that this month I quite steeply increased my mileage (previous doing 3.5k average a day, but in April I've done 4.5k average, which is quite a sharp increase) so that will be what's delayed it. However it also means when it comes it will be horrific and they are bad enough normally!

Things I’ve eaten on this “diet” I enjoy and never would have before
Blue cheese toasted pear and walnut salad
Almond flour chia and flaxseed porridge
Full fat Greek yoghurt
Babybel!
Almond butter

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/04/2020 08:04

@Cream123 there is something about that combination of creamy, fruity and nutty isn't there? It's the thing I miss most not having dairy because soy versions just don't have the creaminess

Kimlek · 24/04/2020 08:45

@Cream123 ooh I live a pear and blue cheese combo! Are you saying you toast your pear? I’m intrigued. What else dyou throw in there? I’d never had cottage cheese before but love it with pear and walnuts... although not as filling as my usual egg & kale lunch.

We are twins!! I started at 12st 3 at Xmas ( so forever ago) have been bouncing around 10.11.6 and 10.13 since mid Feb. I’m also 5’6 with a goal of 10ish. I’ve not been working hard but it’s good to have seen I can maintain despite drinking too much and the odd cake extra. But I do need to get back on it.

Kimlek · 24/04/2020 08:54

🙄 the first bit was meant to be bold!!

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 24/04/2020 08:55

Weighed in this morning at the end of 1 week- I lost 5.6kg...😳blimey!

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 24/04/2020 09:01

Thinking about this.... I now weigh similar to what I did 6-8 weeks ago, I gained those 5-6 kg very fast in the beginning of the lockdown with too much chocolate and alcohol. I needed to lose a shed load anyway, and reached a ‘no, that’s enough’ moment. So I think this loss is a bit like loosing Xmas weight. Hang how, I’m sure next week will be a shock to the system when it shows completely!

Kimlek · 24/04/2020 09:01

@mummyof2munchkins
I'm also battling with the need to have a very large glass of wine. My Friday treat. I worry even the sniff of a wine cork would weaken my resolve and i'd be raiding the crisps and chocolate. It's no wonder I ended up this size, my willpower is not the strongest.
This is me... especially in lockdown and with lovely evenings it’s been impossible not to have a glass of wine every night that then leads into more! We need to find better alternatives that still feel like a treat. Do you like gin and slimline tonic? There’s also a gorgeous Robinson’s lime & mint cordial that put with soda water is very similar to a mojito. It’s far from sugar free but...

Kimlek · 24/04/2020 09:03

Well done ladybird - that’s a great loss!!

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 24/04/2020 09:13

(Anyhow, sorry.)

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 24/04/2020 09:32

Thank you

agteacht · 24/04/2020 11:09

That's amazing @Whattheladybirdsaidnext ! It's taken me 4 weeks to lose the same. You are smashing it

bluepixie · 24/04/2020 11:14

Well done for all the great losses. What an inspiring thread!

Kimlek I’m like u-need some treats and days off ow life is too dull!!! But we are going down albeit slowly! And I feel like I can do this long term too as I have those breaks and that’s what I need. I’m keen to try push through the next few quickly as this is when I usually stop and relax as my bloat is less and my clothes fit. But must keep going!

Lovely day today about to have a tuna salad at 12 with my DS and his ten teddies in the garden!

agteacht · 24/04/2020 11:16

So glad you are feeling brighter @thenewaveragebear1983

@Kimlek @Cream123 @mummyof2munchkins I understand the need for wine... I really wish I could force myself to give up booze for a few weeks like others have done but honestly with a 4 month old I need a glass of wine most days! If I scrutinise my food diaries it's alcohol that's pushing up my calorie count for sure. However! I do think it's important to find a way to maintain in the long term so I'm looking at this as trial and error. If I can incorporate alcohol and still lose but it just takes me a while longer that's okay with me too.

@Cream123 you are firmly in the 10s now!

Re: fasting, I haven't read Fast800 just BSD and not sure if I missed a bit but what's the thinking on length of fast? If you don't do 16:8 but rather 14:10 presumably that still helps but does the extra 2 hours make a significant difference worth pushing for?

bluepixie · 24/04/2020 12:34

@agteacht don’t think the 2 hours makes a huge diff the overal aim is giving ur pancreas a rest from spurting insulin all the time

@Kimlek yes sorry I just pop them in oven till brown And cool down and put into salad it’s tasty!

Anyone else find a can of tuna is soooo filling. Not been able to get hold of any for a while but did today and I’m stuffed!

IgglePiggleNotInBed · 24/04/2020 17:10

Ending today on 978 cals and 52g carbs

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 24/04/2020 17:49

834cal, 32g carbs

bluepixie · 24/04/2020 19:33

Turns out my one day off is 2 off. Wine and now gin being Consumed followed by a non bsd meal.
Back on Sunday! Well done to those who have more willpower than me!

CiorstanMI · 24/04/2020 19:35

Good evening everyone. Seems like we're all doing quite well at the moment. Congratulations @Whattheladybirdsaidnext that's a spectacular loss.

I'm closing the kitchen on day 47 at 848 calories and 33g carbs.
