Blood sugar diet and fast800 support thread #18

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Time restricted eating/TRE :
In addition to the fast800/ BSD plan you can incorporate a strategy of time restricted eating. Put simply, this means only eating between certain times each day to maximise your fasting time. TRE has shown to have positive results for weightloss, even if there is no calorie restriction, and increases insulin sensitivity/reduces insulin resistance. At first, try for a clear 12 hours without food each 24 hours, increasing to 16:8 as you get more adept at fasting.

@IgglePiggleNotInBed @Teaismynewfriend well done both, great losses

I was really down yesterday, felt very blue. Sorry if I was like a bit of a black cloud on here. I feel better today!

@Teaismynewfriend I get what you're saying about running, sometimes especially if I am injured, I do think what am I doing to myself, and more importantly why am I doing it to myself. I had a very long injury prone winter season and I honestly thought a few times I was going to have to give up totally. It never occurs to me to walk instead of run on some days. I have been walking more with the children during lockdown but I never walk on my own.

Today is a fresh new day anyway. I don't think there actually is any sweet or junk food left in the house! We need to shop but it can wait a few days. My food today will be salad and tuna for lunch and dinner will be a fish pie with a mozerella crust and celeriac chips. I don't think I'll run today but I do want to do a hiit workout with a local trainer whose classes I usually attend (bootcamp type thing) he's been doing a class a day and I've hardly done any of them!, and I need to whizz round and Do some housework too. Plus latest episode of 'the secret world of slimming clubs' is out today and that's literally the highlight of my week!

Have a great day today everyone! You're all so inspiring! Star

If it reassure anyone my dad who has been overweight (very tall and tabletop though) for years has lost 11 kg in three months on this type of diet. He was given it by his GP!

Itshotoday · 23/04/2020 08:33

It would help if I could type!

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 23/04/2020 08:48

It’s interesting reading all this... my period started this morning, and it was Tuesday I rampaged through the fridge and ate all the chocolate mousse and a massive bowl of cheerios. I maybe should have predicted it was coming. But I agree, the day or so before a period I end up craving carbs and sugar.
Combination of Thurs eating and period day means I have gained half a kilo since Tuesday morning... I’m hoping that will disappear again quickly.
Have a good day everyone!

NathanNathan · 23/04/2020 09:17

End of week 2 weigh in!

Calories between 702 (must look at what I did that day...) and 1012 across the week, most days around 875.
Carbs between 28 and 40, most days around 35.

Starting weight: 15st 11
Week 1: 15st 5.2
Week 2: 15st 1

Getting ready for a slower loss in week 3 as seems to happen and trying not to let it dishearten me.

IgglePiggleNotInBed · 23/04/2020 09:51

Well done @NathanNathan that's a great loss in 2 weeks

agteacht · 23/04/2020 10:05

10lb in two weeks that's amazing @NathanNathan !!! ❤️

Ooh @thenewaveragebear1983 do you have easily available your fish pie recipe?

NathanNathan · 23/04/2020 10:25

Thank you both! It is motivating. I think it's slightly easier as I'm starting so heavy!

I won't add double cream though, I use dairy free cream cheese

OP posts:
agteacht · 23/04/2020 12:58

That looks yum. Would be lovely with double cream but would blow my already always stretched calorie budget 😂
Will buy some quark later and try it out!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/04/2020 14:17

@agteacht don't use quark, it's fat free and will just separate. Use full fat soft cheese or Philadelphia

OP posts:
agteacht · 23/04/2020 14:20

Ohhhhh thank you. Okay will do! Full fat Philadelphia too, not the light one?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/04/2020 14:31

Yes full fat everything! I've used the value full fat soft cheese before, doesn't have to be phili, but if it's not full fat it will separate

agteacht · 23/04/2020 15:28

Thanks!

bluepixie · 23/04/2020 18:04

Kitchen closed
815 and 37g carbs

I had strawberries with almond butter on them today for “pudding” which I. Usually don’t have but my dinner was only 200 cals and I didn’t want to get hungry later

It was literally delicious!!!!! I recommend it :)

Hope everyone had good days
I’m knackered!
Food today Greek yog and berries
Prawn salad and lattee (Whoopy ive missed them!
Chicken and courgetti with strawberries and almond butter

IgglePiggleNotInBed · 23/04/2020 19:08

Finishing today on 780 cals and 43g carbs. Intermittent fasting is going well, I'm doing anything between 18 - 20hours which I find doable. Then I can stuff my face with all my cals in one go Grin

CiorstanMI · 23/04/2020 19:58

Day 46 and a bit over the limits today, 935 calories and 63g carbs.

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 23/04/2020 20:27

Day 3 and Im finding it a bit easier. I’m aware my stomach is rumbling at times and I could probably eat something but it’s not that all consuming carb craving that can’t be ignored.
That said, I’ve not moved much today as been feeling unwell (can’t tell if it is hayfever, a cold or both) so not burning loads of energy so maybe why hunger is less.

Have been feeling a bit down, but I don’t know whether that’s lockdown blues, being ill, feeling a bit overwhelmed with work, not eaten enough or just plain hormonal. Possibly all of the above! No easy fixes so just taking it easy and trying to be kind to myself.

On plus side weight is going down and I’m less bloated.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/04/2020 21:14

I had a good day today. I haven't counted cals and I haven't done my intended exercise (my leg was sore so I thought I'd be kind to myself) and have only done 9k steps. But I feel a lot better in my headspace and that is much needed.

My food has been good: salad and tuna for lunch, and dinner was fish bake. No yogurt or fruit or puds of any sort; no sugar either! So I'm feeling quite positive. I have contributed with my hypno book and it's helping to focus me a bit I think.

Tomorrow: run in the morning, yoga at some point, I need to do some housework etc too. Food will be a salad as always then dinner I think will be something using casserole beef, maybe a rogan josh curry or a stew.

bluepixie · 23/04/2020 21:57

Anyone else worry about the amount of cheese and cream and full fat yoghurt and milk they r having. I.e sat fats?
I’ve gone from eating no cheese to having a small amount most days (usually a babybel!) when I look the evidence is mixed about sat fats

Any thoughts or worries?

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 23/04/2020 21:57

End of 1st week! Day closed on 810 cal and 29g carbs and I really, really, really want to finish my daughters Easter egg. Or a hot chocolate the size of my head. Or maybe all the quavers.

I’m hungry.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/04/2020 22:04

@Cream123 I think within a varied 800 calories diet day it's ok, because if one day you have lots then maybe other days you won't have any. If you're not calorie counting and are sort of 'free eating' then yes I'd be mindful of how much dairy, but not actually from a fat perspective, but from a carb perspective because the lactose sugar in dairy can affect your carb cravings and it can be quite addictive .,Some people are more sensitive to dairy carbs than others are so it's worth being aware of how it affects you personally.

OP posts:
agteacht · 23/04/2020 22:22

Glad you are feeling better in yourself @thenewaveragebear1983

I'm ending the day on 934 cals and 20g carbs after having another lo-dough pizza. DH ate a 'normal' pizza at the same time and although his looked way better mine was perfect given its low carbs!

mummyof2munchkins · 23/04/2020 22:50

Can I join you please. I am on day 10, with 7lbs lost so far. My starting weight was the heaviest I've ever been, even my 9 months pregnant body was lighter. I could argue i'm still struggling with baby weight but it's a difficult argument to hold considering the baby is 18 and 6ft tall. Unless I can convince anybody he was very, very overdue I suspect it won't hold as an excuse.

Ideally I'd like to loose 2 1/2 - 3 stone. I'm actually doing ok and feeling ok (ish) with this diet. It's boring, basically every meal is a variation on a small piece of meat and some veg or salad. I need to find a way of getting some fibre into my diet, bloating and constipation is not a great look. Tips would be very welcome.

I'm also battling with the need to have a very large glass of wine. My Friday treat. I worry even the sniff of a wine cork would weaken my resolve and i'd be raiding the crisps and chocolate. It's no wonder I ended up this size, my willpower is not the strongest.
