Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 16

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/08/2019 21:26

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Urgh I feel utterly disgusting after stuffing my face since last Wednesday 🐷🐷

Hitting it hard tomorrow
I hate feeling like this, I've not even enjoyed the eating it's just been stuffing mostly

I've made a lovely tuna & goats cheese salad for tomorrow and have a healthy chicken & veg for dinner
Try and get a spin class in

I did burn 577 calories at combat on Saturday but my god was I angry

Maccalenny · 09/09/2019 05:28

Bear you must be so pleased with getting your time down....that’s amazing. When is your next race?

Mozzchops hope today goes better for you.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/09/2019 07:31

Macca thanks, I'm racing on 6th October, just a 10km this time.

Mozzchops I hear you! I feel totally grim today, it must be water mostly because while I have had a few extras I haven't eaten that much, but I weighed in today as the heaviest I have been for a long time, even after my holiday!! That's awful. I haven't stuck to my resolution to have a really healthy, alcohol free, lots of sleep September and it's really showing. So I must must must start a fresh today. The sweet stuff has to go, but also the little tastes of things here and there. I know I will regret it if I gain ahh more, and frankly I don't want to stay at this weight either, so I have to STOP NOW!!

We'll I'm in the same boat, highest I've been in a while and feeling like crap. About to do today's yoga & then try & get sorted. Definitely need to up my water levels too. But feeling crappy & really want to get back on track and lose this last 12lbs!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/09/2019 09:31

Let's do it!
For me it appears to be the culmination of winging it continuously and getting away with it for the last few months, and now when I don't deserve it, it's come back to haunt me. As I always say, a good week always shows- well so does a bad one!

Back to basics always works for me, starting with properly weighing and measuring, writing everything down, drinking more water and focussing on fat and protein first. But really, I just need to switch off my carb seeking sensors!

OP posts:
MozzchopsThirty · 09/09/2019 10:50

@thenewaveragebear1983 you will get back into it, it's just a blip
Sometimes we need them so we can focus

I have a stressful week ahead but I know that eating crap will only make it worse so determined to stay on track

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/09/2019 12:18

Those first few days back in the saddle are always harder because it's basically day 1 detox all over again!

Haven't eaten yet today, so lunch will be soon. It's quite refreshing to feel hungry!

Hi all, I have been ploughing away, although more relaxed on the weekends as we always seem to have plans. I am visibly a bit smaller now although by brother visited and took the scales (they were his originally) so I have not weighed myself since last Friday. It’s been better actually as I’ve just committed to the WOE without angsting about whether it’s working.

Made mushroom soup for lunch with a piece of sourdough toast and it’s pork stir fry for dinner. Very low cal so might have something else at some point.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/09/2019 20:19

Kitchen closed on 1360 cals, 77g carbs (which seems unfairly high actually!), 17k steps (5k was a run). Not a perfect start, but it was good.

My food was really low carb all afternoon but then I did have a lot of veg for dinner so that's where the carbs have come from. Also I had a fig, not realising how high carb they are! Won't do that again without checking!

Tomorrow: I am going to fast again til lunchtime, (it was 1.00 today and it really does help my cravings) then for lunch I'm going to have egg salad, dinner will be chicken curry (or something of that ilk!), with a short morning run and circuits in the evening.

Very excited because i have booked myself a sports massage as a treat on Wednesday, I've never had one before and I'm really looking forward to it!

@FastAway would you share you mushroom soup recipe please?

Nice to go to bed not feeling fit to burst

MozzchopsThirty · 09/09/2019 22:04

@thenewaveragebear1983 I managed 71g of carbs (all veg)
But closed on 752 calories

How many g are we supposed to stick to?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/09/2019 07:15

Mozzchops there's no hard and fast rule. Realistically, if you stick to 800 calories and don't eat bread, pasta, rice, sugar, fruit, cereals etc - you will be fine having other carbs (eg veg) within that 800 cals because it's naturally self limiting. However, if like me you have more cals daily then it can help to have a limit, eg 50g/75g whatever works for you.
All that being said, however, if you stick to 800 and regularly have higher carbs days, my concern would be that you would by default not be getting enough fat and protein to sustain the diet. And also, I do find that to get the really quick results, cutting the carbs right back is more effective than cutting the calories back so for me it's more efficient to have 1200 cals but 25g carbs, rather than 800 cals and 50g carbs.

After my first day I'm down 3lbs. It never fails to amaze me just how much water I can carry. I am like a camel!

PhoenixMama · 10/09/2019 08:48

We'll all my bad habits have caught up with me & I'm up by 7lbs. Yesterday was another derailing day but I'm so stressed I'm not sure I'm going to be able to get it all under control until something gives. I'm really cross with myself but also feeling very out of control. Arrrrrrggggggghhhhh!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/09/2019 09:18

Aw Phoenix, sorry you're so stressed Thanks. If food is beyond your control right now, maybe choose one thing that you can control, eg. Tracking all your food, or drinking more water, or another healthy habit. Something small and achievable?

I have heard of a YouTube thing called rainbow yoga (I think it's Adrienne) which is children's yoga but I'm sure there's other similar ones- maybe you and your dd could do it together? I'm going to try it with my wild 3yo next time he's not at nursery to see if he likes it.

It’s just the one from the book Mozzchops, do you have it? If not I will post a pic.

It all went a bit wrong yesterday evening, rushed around like a mad thing and didn’t have time to cook the stir fry so ended up at the cinema having only had 200cal that day.... was totally ravenous and had to have a flatbread with cheese (and some salty popcorn). Whoops. New day today, mushroom soup for lunch and fish bake for dinner.

maddenlightfoot · 10/09/2019 16:23

Keep going for all those struggling... it's a marathon not a sprint (not that I'm able to do either of those 🏃‍♀️!)

I've had a weird one today... have been sticking to TRE 12-6 but as I'd eaten by 4pm yesterday ended up breaking my fast at 10:30 today. I've been starving all afternoon and have just wolfed down a small chunk of cheese and some left over roast beef. Now I feel stuffed and tired. I feel like I could easily not eat dinner but I've got 300 cals left and think it will be better to close kitchen at 6pm so I'm back on track for TRE tomorrow. It's tofu stir fry so hopefully low-cal

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/09/2019 17:29

Very nice chicken and coconut curry with zero noodles for tea tonight. Very filling!

I’m still doing a bit of exercise every day (I’m shocking at keeping to any exercise schedule so this is quite good for me) and just did a lovely 15 mins yoga in the garden in the sunshine! I would have done more but my cats were bored watching me and insisted it was time for tea.

Breakfast today was mince and cauli mash, lunch was avocado salad and stuffed peppers for tea.

MozzchopsThirty · 10/09/2019 19:00

Oh that curry looks great
Is it out of the book?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/09/2019 20:20

Mozz no it's just chicken thigh fillets, yellow pepper, mushrooms, tandoori seasoning and a tin of coconut milk. Reserve a bit of the sauce to toss the zero noodles in because they are very bland and watery if they are plain! It was really tasty and very filling, the noodles taste very carby even though they are only 12 cals and 1g carbs!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/09/2019 21:01

Closing up the kitchen on 1280 cals, 57g carbs, 20k steps (5.5k run and a circuits class included in that)

Food was good, no snacks, carbs are low, lots of water....Good day all round really. Made myself a sugar free soy milk jelly with frozen berries in which is my sweet treat for while bake off is on!

Tomorrow: rest day and I have a massage booked (can't wait!) then a few jobs to get done. Food will be a tuna salad for lunch, and dinner will be stuffed chicken breasts with braised red cabbage.

Hi everyone, I need to catch up on thread, sorry. My DH and kids have food poisoning (not me as I didn’t eat what they did) and I am flat out looking after them. They all have identical symptoms which is kind of helpful but grim. They felt better this morning but now have a second wave. I am grabbing whatever I can (carb heavy) to keep going. DH feels doubly bad as he was the chef! Horrible few days, everyone pretty low in spirits at this point.

maddenlightfoot · 11/09/2019 06:57

Oh Riddle that sounds grim - hope they're all better soon.

On weigh in this morning I've now lost 1st! It's great, especially as a few weeks ago I was feeling panicked at going back to work having piled on so much holiday weight. Ironically, however, as much as I feel slimmer, it's not like people are stopping me in the street to exclaim about my weight loss 😂. I think what I mean is that a stone off feels good, and I do look better, but at the same time perhaps that extra stone on is not nearly as noticeable as I think it is at the time (iyswim!)

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/09/2019 07:07

Riddle you poor things! I poisoned us in January with a reheated Christmas dinner from the freezer (lovely it was as well!) and oh my, it was the worst feeling, I honestly thought I would die and I didn't even care. Horrible. Hope they feel better soon Thanks

Madden amazing ! Starwell done

I'm another 3lbs down today, which again must be water mostly, which means 6lbs in 2 days! I feel a lot less puffy now, not lighter especially, but hopefully my jeans will fit a bit better now that's fine!

Hi

Can I join? I'm just starting my second week on the 800cal diet. Lost about 3kg so far but have had period so not sure if my weight went up just before I came on or it's down to the diet.

Hoping to see some changes over the next few weeks
