Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 16

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/08/2019 21:26

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Morning all.

Are any of you finding this thread isn't bumping up in their 'I'm on' section in the app? I keep having to search waaaay back down the list to find it.

Anyway..... I'm having a crappy hormonal week. My food's ok but I'm spoiling it by having sugar (medicinal, for my hormones Grin) so regardless of what I eat I'm not losing and I feel bloated and uncomfortable now with water retention. And grumpy to boot.

Wore jeans for the first time in weeks yesterday and even though over the summer I've only really gained 4lbs (which is not terrible and considering I'm at home All day with the kids I am ok with that!) but I can feel every single pound, so my jeans are just slightly uncomfortable! Could really do with getting my head back in the game and a good few weeks on plan.

Today: I've decided to cut the carbs right back for the weekend and try and reset myself a bit. It's my rest day from running although I might get a walk later with Ds; lunch will be egg and bacon, possibly with avocado. Dinner will be rib eye steak with salad. It's Friday so Dh will bring home a bottle of red which I endeavour to resist (but we'll reassess at the end of the day!!) but the key thing is to be no fridge grazing and no sugar!!

Hope everyone's ok

Hi Bear, I think the thread is fine on my app. All good here, too busy and not getting enough sleep for various reasons. The week of my period I find it impossible to diet and just have to ride it out. We are having steak tonight too, enjoy!

Mazig · 06/09/2019 09:44

Hello everyone. I've not been posting because work has been crazy but I've stuck to the diet. Well, other than Wednesday which was a total disaster, but we won't talk about that. Grin

I'm still struggling a little with the incredibly slow progress, but since I completely sabotaged the week on Wednesday, its my own fault. After my last negative post, I've tried to focus on the positives (especially wearing my lovely jeans that didn't fit before). And 8 pounds is 8 pounds, right??

I'm also bored with the food. What's everyone having for dinner tonight? Any good, unusual recommendations??

PhoenixMama · 06/09/2019 10:20

Hi all - stress city here too. Although had a bit of a win yesterday which is nice. Just been told that dd might not get a school place until the end of the month which is (a) insane and (b) might kill me! I need routine, and we need a break from each other.

Not really sure how I'm going to get back on plan with her home all day every day. Need a re-think.

Dinner tonight is home made pizzas, tortillas for the base, some ham & cheese and a drizzle of pesto for the rest. Relatively low carb and delicious!

Mazig · 06/09/2019 10:38

Phoenix, that pizza sounds great. Just the kind of thing I'd like to have.

How old is your DD?

PhoenixMama · 06/09/2019 12:12

My DD is 10 and going into Y6. I've just downloaded a bunch of schooling resources to keep her busy but I'm craving proper routines again!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/09/2019 13:46

Phoenix that does sound tough. You could use it to your advantage though and do a menu/budget activity, plan a meal, look at nutrition and cook it together?! I used to teach adults (prisoners) and this is what I'd do all the time, multi skill lessons that are real life and functional. I'm sure your dd is better behaved than my old students though!

Good start today, walked into town with Ds and back home up the big hill. Bacon and egg for lunch, with an avocado. Bought myself some new jeans and 2 tops in primark to cheer my gloomy mood up!!

Mozzchops!!! Noooooooooo!!! Naughty corner for you!

I've been surprisingly good today given I've had rather an anxiety ridden 24 hours (nothing spectacular or dramatic, but I've been sort of roped into something that requires me to deliver /promise something that's way out of my comfort zone- that sounds more exciting than it actually is, granted. But anyway, it's caused me much anxiety to the point of not sleeping at all last night) - but anyhoo, my diet today has mostly consisted of meat. An egg. More meat. Wine. So not the healthiest, but very low carb.

Tomorrow, 8 am, bootcamp I will be regretting my choices today, but for now I am quite pleased that I've finally had a day which didn't end in a rendezvous with Barney Bear if you don't have toddlers, you won't understand

Also, wine and v low carb makes you quite tipsy, can you tell?

Morning all. My meaty day yesterday resulted in a 2lb loss overnight, which is good! I'm going to stick to the same today, not calorie counting but basically no carbs. Just had bacon, egg and avocado for breakfast!

Hello, please may I join you? I just discovered the BSD book in the library and started 3 days ago. Last night a friend asked if I've lost weight! That has definitely spurred me on.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/09/2019 11:07

Hi bluedomino, welcome!

Mazig · 07/09/2019 11:25

So still lost nothing. But I have lost 1 inch off my waist this week and my body fat is down about 1%. So I am clinging to that as a positive and trying very hard not to lose heart. It's my fault this week because I had such a terrible day on Wednesday.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/09/2019 12:25

Mazig have you planned your meals for the next few days? I find it really helpful to sit with my notebook and calorie tracker and actually work out my food and calories/carbs in advance. That way there's no room for error, you know exactly what you're having and how much you've got left to play with.
Or the other thing I find helpful is like I did yesterday/today- just cut the carbs right back but eat as much protein/fat as you want to ride out the carb flu, then once you've done a few days then concentrate on the calories as well. It's frustrating if you're not losing. I sometimes find though that I can't pick it back up, I need a complete reboot to get back on it properly. The inches are going down So you must be doing something right!

Mazig an inch off your waist is amazing.

My weight has been steady this week, but I am gradually feeling thinner.....weird as it sounds, I feel like my skin is catching up with my weight loss a bit! The yoga and general increase in activity might be helping a bit. I went on a walk with a meet-up group this morning, then a couple of hours of fairly vigorous gardening this afternoon.

Today breakfast was a sort of hash with mashed cauli, mushrooms and veg, quorn sausage with a couple of fried eggs. Lunch was raspberries and yoghurt, and tea was chicken and veg soup and halloumi with salad. I don’t count calories at the weekend as I’ve been on this so long, just keep on plan and low carb.

maddenlightfoot · 08/09/2019 07:01

Macca yes I totally get that! My weight has dropped by tiny amounts yet I feel thinner and my clothes are really fitting much better.

Gosh I craved a wine and chocolate last night (feeling a bit under the weather so would have been medicinal!) I resisted though, thankfully as I'm already feeling a bit tough this morning and after two weeks off sugar and wine think I would have been feeling much worse. We had turkey fajitas in lettuce wraps for dinner last night - delicious!

frumpety · 08/09/2019 12:13

Maccalenny can i just ask how you did your graph from a previous page please ?

Maccalenny · 08/09/2019 14:49

Hi frumpety - I use an app called happy scale. It’s fab! Shows an average line and evens out the ups and downs.

PhoenixMama · 08/09/2019 14:55

Hi all! Threw my housewarming party last night, loads of prosecco but don't care lol. Had a great time & I really needed it (despite yesterday & today being write ok FFS!)

Still not sure how next week is going to go with DD home. Going to sit down & have a proper think tomorrow.

Welcome Blue, 1 inch is brill Mazig, Macca I'm liking the yoga too, Def getting stronger! Mozz what meds were they? Blue inspiring as always! Hope you're ok with your big thing despite the anxiety!

Maccalenny · 08/09/2019 17:05

Bear you mentioned keeping the carbs low but eating fat and protein fairly freely to manage the carb flu - I do this if I’m having a bad day for whatever reason, so I avoid a full-on sugar or wheat binge.

Maccalenny · 08/09/2019 17:09

Phoenix - hope the housewarming was fabulous and you are recovered from the Prosecco! Also hope the home education goes ok next week and that your dd’s school placement is sorted out soon.

Maccalenny · 08/09/2019 17:13

A really nice day today...more cauli hash with quorn sausage and fried eggs this morning, then went out to pick blackberries with my dd. Home to work in the garden for a couple of hours - some heavy digging and some wielding of the pickaxe for some massive tree roots. Skipped lunch as not hungry, and prepped some crustless quiche and stuffed peppers for next week. Tea was a bit of spare lentil mixture from the stuffed peppers, with avocado and halloumi - a bit thrown together but gorgeous!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 08/09/2019 18:27

Yesterday didn't really go well for me Despite starting off strong, but today's been better. I ran 10km this morning and smashed my time (I've taken 30 seconds off my km time over 10km, so 3 mins off in 2 weeks!) and have done a further 10k Steps just on usual life stuff. A bit of grazing but mostly because the cupboards are bare and the BSD options are very limited. I'll be much better tomorrow when I've shopped. I had gammon and a very pitiful salad for dinner with lentils.

I have a thumping head today which could be a sign of a low carb day or could be something else. We'll see tomorrow.

This week ahead is my optimum week for weight loss in my cycle, so I'm really going to try to be strict. The biggest factor for me is delaying breakfast as long as I possibly can as the earlier I eat, the more I eat all day. This shouldn't be too difficult tomorrow as the fridge is empty!

Meals tomorrow are egg/tuna salad for lunch, and pork steaks with celeriac mash for dinner. I've scheduled for a short treadmill run with hiit intervals (doing 2 mins run, 1 min weights x 10) but depending on how I feel I might do a YouTube vid instead.

Hope everyone has a great week!
