Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 16

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/08/2019 21:26

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Great losses everyone!

Welcome Hammaconda - sounds like a really good first few days.

I’m two lb down over the last week - very happy! One more lb and I will have lost four stone in less than 7 months. Feels a bit unreal!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/09/2019 18:42

Welcome hammaconda!

Maccalenny that's incredible, well done!

Ending the day on 1200 cals, 53g carbs. Had a nice restful day (less than 10k steps) as I had my massage this morning so I've just chilled all
Afternoon! Lovely.

Tomorrow- a run in the morning, then I am baking for a pta function which is on Friday. It's Always a test of my willpower but I know that it's better to have none at all than even having a tiny taste. Dinner will be salad and tuna (I've been buying these mini tins of ginger and soy tuna from Tesco, they are amazing) and dinner will be mince. Maybe as chilli or Asian style with zero noodles, I fancy something spicy.

Ella personally I don't use it for exactly that reason. I prefer to use normal recipe books and tweak them to the plan, or just eat normal meals minus the carbs.

It depends how confident a cook you are but really you can follow the formula of
Meat / protein source + fats + veg carbs and break everything down that way I go through a recipe for example by Jamie Oliver, and provided the main ingredient isn't starchy carbs (eg potato/pasta/rice) I will consider it a possible option. I got a really good keto cookbook in the works a while ago and that's been really useful.

Hi all - I'm trying to stay offline. Not doing the fast800 but will try to focus for next week.

@Elloello I love the BSD cookbook - really helped me out the first month learning what to cook. The chicken korma is hands down a new family favourite. I do not like lentils at all and I think aside from 1 recipe we've made loads of different things without lentils. Some of the recipes need more spice but I love the cookbook (I do not feel the same way about the Fast800 recipe book - that was a massive waste of money!)

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/09/2019 07:11

Another 1lb off for me overnight, making a total of 7lbs so far this week. Now 10.5.5- yes, I had gone up to 10.12.5 after the last few weeks which I was very unhappy with. I've been here many times before though! I'm now over the detox I guess, I was ravenous last night but managed to coast through it with eggs and pork scratchings in the evening. I have a few boiled eggs done for today as emergency snacks. What I really need to do is stay focussed over the weekend and for me that means not eating so early and no wine.

Morning all. I'm planning to start Fast 800 again tomorrow. I lost about 2st 7lbs before but have lots more to lose and I want to knock off another couple of stone before Christmas. I'm starting my strength training back at the gym to retain my muscles as well.
Love the support on this thread and looking forward to sharing my successes Smile

PhoenixMama · 12/09/2019 16:57

Well ladies - all my Christmases have come at once... DD got into a great school and I just found out my project is being funded! SO relieved, and just in the nick of time because I noticed today how much bigger my belly is getting with all this comfort eating!

Back on the eating from Monday (too much champagne planned for the weekend!) I feel like a totally different person now this is all off my shoulders!

And as I said, although the weight is hovering I'm definitely bloated and flabby which I need to sort out pronto as I have no intention of going back up a size!

Maccalenny · 12/09/2019 18:20

Phoenix that is fabulous - so pleased for you! Enjoy your wonderful weekend of celebration.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/09/2019 19:03

Woooo hoooo Phoenix, you must be so relieved!

I'm closing up the kitchen today on 1200 cals, but around 80g carbs (was doing** brilliantly but then I ate a homemade choc chip biscuit as I've been pta baking all day!) but even with that it's not horrendous. I did 14k Steps (inc a short run, 4.5k). My dinner was delicious- I made a lamb keema with lentils, basically lamb mince, red lentils, spices and stock, served with zero noodles. Really tasty.

Tomorrow I have a coffee morning to host (hence the cakes!) and then a day with the boy so no run for me, although that works out quite well because I want to do a long one on Saturday. I'm getting a bit bored of salad so I'm planning a hot brunch, then dinner will be a Gastro fish oven thing with calamari and mushy peas!

maddenlightfoot · 12/09/2019 19:36

Ah! Lovely news deserves 🥂! That's fab Phoenix.

Yum Bear - cookies sound delicious! For the time being I'm completely stepping away from any sweet treats. Biscuits are my absolute weakness (can easily polish off a whole pack of chocolate digestives with a large mug of tea 😋)

In fact, tea is making up about 150 cals for me a day as I tend to drink it with whole milk as that's what's in the house for the toddlers. I should cut back but tea can really help fill a gap.

Small lunch of cheese, cherry toms and pickled onion then dinner was a tin of mackerel, tin of plum toms and a load of spinach.

I've been 800 cals for 2-3 weeks now so think from next week I need to introduce a day or two of higher cals. I need this to become my go-to way of eating rather than something I do and then go back to old habits.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/09/2019 19:52

Madden I promise you, they were horrible Grinactually, I really did only taste one as a test as it was a Jew recipe, and all afternoon I've had to be very strong willed so it really wasn't worth it.

OP posts:
Riddleofthesands · 12/09/2019 19:54

Great news PhoenixMama really happy for you.

Thanks Bear and Madden re food poisoning sympathy. Hoping they are about to turn a corner, so far tiny lunch has been kept down, fingers crossed. DH has lost 10 lbs since Saturday and DS has lost 9 lbs!

I am living on carbs, grabbing toast, frozen pasta ready meals. Hopefully I will be in a position to weigh and get back on it on Monday.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/09/2019 20:08

It was not a Jew recipe- autocorrect fail!! It was a new recipe- my apologies

OP posts:
maddenlightfoot · 12/09/2019 20:19

Damn you auto-correct 😂

Riddleofthesands · 12/09/2019 21:21

Made me laugh. Smile

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/09/2019 08:18

Morning everyone. Stayed the same today, 10.5.5, and my challenge is to maintain (at least) this weekend. Dh is already discussing wine, bbq and the like, so I am just going to have to remain strong and remember what I'm here for.

So this is my mantra for the weekend!

Hi, can I ask if you thought the bsd recipe book was worth buying? Is it mainly lentil and chickpea based meals because I can't get along with lentils, I've tried to like them but I just don't.

I really like it. There are some recipes with lentils/chickpeas but most are not. The cauliflower cheese is my very favourite thing from it, but there's plenty of other good recipes and suggestions for snacks, side dishes and so on. I'd say it's well worth it.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/09/2019 20:02

A reasonable day today but I haven't calorie counted and I know I've had more cals and carbs than recent days- I can feel it.

Haven't eaten dinner yet but it's freezer fish, crushed peas and calamari, and yes, a glass of wine. Sorry me, I have broken my resolve to not drink again!

A Saturday graph and weigh-in. I’m currently 12 st 9.2, down two lb this week and 55.2lb since 23rd February.
I’m still doing a bit of exercise, but not as much as I should be. Despite this I can feel my body shape changing - it still feels like my skin is catching up and shrinking to my new size. I’m feeling muscles more and clothes are fitting better, even though I’m losing more slowly now.

On my graph, my rate of loss slowed in about June when I stopped counting and weighing so carefully. Which means that I’ve not really been strict 800 since then....I don’t eat sugar, wheat or high carb, I still keep my eating window to about 10 hours...7am to 5pm typically, and I’m still eating the things I was eating on fast800 but I don’t weigh and measure or log calories now. I would estimate I eat 1000-1200 most days.
So I’m really pleased that I’m still losing about 1lb a week, with what feels like very little effort. I feel like I can carry on doing this in the long term to lose a final stone and then maintain. At the moment, I’m confident that I will lose a bit more and manage to maintain. I’ve been strict at sorting clothes and getting rid of anything too big, so I cannot risk putting any back on! I’m feeling really positive at the moment and feel like I have finally accepted that this is a way of life for ever for me - I’ve yoyoed up and down to many times and don’t plan on going there again. I love being thinner and healthier too much to give it up.
Have a great Saturday everyone!

Wow macca! That is an incredibly beautiful, downwards curving graph. You should feel really proud and I love hearing how you're losing/maintaining as you've changed eating habits for the long term. This will be my next step.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/09/2019 11:04

Loving your work macca as always Star

A good start to the day for me, went out for a good long run and smashed a few personal bests, then a lovely low carb brunch of bacon and gorgeous free range eggs from my friend's very happy chickens (you can definitely taste the difference)

I'm now Sat reading a very interesting book about Ketosis, and the science behind it. It's talking about supplements- I personally don't take any but at my sports massage she suggested I take some and this book suggests some too so I'm going to Holland and Barratt this afternoon for a look. Maybe magnesium and omega 3 I think (apparently the ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 is very important and too much omega 6 can prevent ketosis so an O3 supplement can help tip the balance back the right way)

Have a great weekend everyone!

PhoenixMama · 14/09/2019 11:38

Well done Macca! I'm in awe of your commitment & losses!

I'm happily planning for getting back on track next week! Yay!

Riddleofthesands · 14/09/2019 11:52

Great results Macca well done.

I think family over food poisoning now, kids will be back in school on Monday. I weighed and have gained 3 lbs after my high carb and high calorie week. I will start to decrease carbs now and on Monday do a proper Fast 800 week. DH and I have two nights away without kids in 4 weeks so that is a nice goal to try and get on target by then.
