Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 16

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/08/2019 21:26

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Two days done. Today we went to DM's house for sunday lunch, I managed 60g of lamb and a pile of veg, no carbs, except maybe a tiny bit in the gravy, and I only had a tiny bit in that. Tomorrow is porridge with grated apple (my own quantities), egg wrap with tuna, onion and spinach and my own veggie chilli with cauliflower rice. I should have calories left for blueberries and greek yoghurt. Have just batch cooked some chickpea curry for Wednesday (and other meals) and we're having salmon stir fry on Tuesday. DH is happy to eat my meals with carbs but it is a pain catering for the children. All good so far...have a good week everyone!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/09/2019 06:45

Thefemalejoshlyman that sounds like a good start, and great planning!

It's official day 1 for me, yesterday I tried but my meals although technically on plan were just too carby. That red lentil pasta is delicious though, worth remembering if ever you need a carb fix.

Today: last two days of the holidays. Food shop this morning and some sort of outdoor activity this afternoon with the boys. Food wise, I'm aiming for as long a fast as possible, although I need to get back into that habit as I've slipped over the holiday into eating fairly early, then lunch will be leftover Moroccan stew from yesterday and dinner will be something off my menu depending on the use by dates when I get back from shopping!

Macca I agree about September, my parents are/were teachers so September was like new year in our house too! It's nice to harness that feeling of optimism and fresh starts though!

Phoenix sorry to hear you're having a tough time still, hope you are ok Thanks

Good day back at work....some nice comments about my continued weight loss. It was nice to be away from any temptation - to know that all my food for the day was in my lunch bag and nothing else was available.
I’ve done most of day 2 of 30 days of yoga. I’m poor at finishing workouts...I get bored and give up part way through. I want to stop doing that, but am not going to be too strict or I know I won’t even start. So I did 22mins out of 33. Better than nothing! I can really notice my weight loss as I’m able to jump from plank to forward bend, rather than step like I used to have to do.
I received sad news today about an aunt who I was very close to when I was younger. One of my first thoughts was....I need food. Carbs. Chocolate. Biscuits. I didn’t, but it is strange how programmed my brain is.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/09/2019 20:30

A reasonable first day today. My calories were quite high (1500,) and carbs also quite high (but all 'allowed' just had lots of veg, and chickpeas) so not too terrible but could be better. I did 16k steps (which included a very fast 5km run).

All prepped for tomorrow though, and that's my carbiest menu day done now. Tomorrow I have chicken salad for lunch, and spicy chicken and cauli rice for dinner, plus I've boiled up the chicken bones so I'll have some nice chicken broth as well During the day. It's my circuits class tomorrow night so I'm going to have to eat either quite early or very late, but if I can hold out til after it then I could end up having a close to 800 cals day!

Macca sorry about your sad news. Glad you managed to resist the carbs. Thanks

After losing steadily all week I've now weighed in at the same two days running - how can this be??!!! 😩
One day seemed fair enough but two?? I even heroically avoided all back to work snacks and treats yesterday 😂

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/09/2019 07:56

Madden it's quite common unfortunately to have these mini plateaus/stalls especially in the early days, I think because the rapid weightloss at first can sort of shock the body a bit and then it takes a few days to catch up!

I feel positive for a good day today. Last day of the holidays! I'm so looking forward to getting back to a proper routine.

Morning all! Weirdly my message yesterday didn't send... Did ok yesterday taking DD and her best friend to Harry Potter Studio Tour (even had some butterbeer). Ended up eating out because we were so late getting back but still made mostly good choices.

Did day 3/30 yoga today - god my core is weak... What I meant to send yesterday was: Macca I'm doing the 2015 one too! Madden You don't have to follow them for them to work but she does build the moves and you build strength up in certain muscles as a result. I found the 2018 one more advanced and I just couldn't get into the the 2019 one as the sessions were quite long (and slow). I think the earlier ones (Yoga Camp and 30 Days) are easier if you're new to yoga but obviously you could just do a different video for 30 days and still be doing it 'right'!

Off to do a shop of healthy foods for the rest of this week. DD doesn't have a school place yet so it looks like I've got her for an extra 2 weeks! Eeek!

PhoenixMama · 03/09/2019 19:35

Well today has been a bit of a fail! I didn't plan well enough for lunch so ended up with DD chosen pizza and then I made the BSD Cauliflower Cheese for dinner and it was so so good so I had a portion and a half but didn't enter the calories first and it's not nearly as low cal as i remember (750 cals for 1.5 portion!!) Ooops. Didn't drink nearly as much water as I should have either.

Maccalenny · 03/09/2019 20:27

Day 3/30 days....did the whole thing instead of wimping out....really nice session.
So many chocolate biscuits around at work! People are used to me not eating them now though so I don’t get offered them much, which helps with the temptation a lot!
Breakfast today was turkey chilli, lunch was sausages with tomatoes and mushrooms, with crustless quiche for tea.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/09/2019 21:05

Phoenix me too today, I've ended up way over because I ate a few biscuits, and another few. I am hormonal and what I really want is a giant slab of dairy milk. It's horrible isn't it?

Hopefully a better day tomorrow. If nothing else, the little kids are back at school so I should be able to hold off eating until lunchtime. I'm going for a nice long run with no time restraints which I haven't for ages. Then taking dd to Prezzo as it's her last day off before she goes back Thursday.

OP posts:
thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/09/2019 08:00

I'm 1.5lb down this morning, so a reasonable start to the week. I've looked at the menu for prezzo and I'm going to have a chicken Avo and bacon salad, and possibly a starter. All the puddings are dairy based so that rules them out, and after my biscuit incident yesterday I was very uncomfortable/bloated which I'm sure is the result of dairy (or actually dairy+gluten combo) so it does help me resist when I know it makes me feel so bad.

No breakfast, going to a lovely long run instead, and dinner will be a lentil and mince cottage pie with celeriac mash on top.

Have a great day!

Quick!!!!!

Which is worse:
Dominos veggie pizza

Or

Oven chips & tin ravioli

I have had the shittest couple of weeks and I am gonna stuff my face Sad

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/09/2019 16:24

Dominoes would be worse calories wise, but oven chips and ravioli would be worse carbs wise I reckon

OP posts:
thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/09/2019 16:25

I can't actually tell from your message whether you want the healthier option or not?? Are you in total self destruct mode? Or damage limitation mode?

OP posts:
thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/09/2019 16:31

Shall I do the right thing here and attempt to talk you down from the ledge? Grin

Ok- you know you'll feel worse if you eat that rubbish. You may have had a shit few weeks but a dominoes isn't going to remove that, or make tomorrow any better.
Make a nice healthy salad.
Later on, go for a nice walk on this beautiful September evening to a shop a few miles away and promise yourself a lovely bar of chocolate (or whatever your poison is) when you get there.

I promise, promise promise that you'll feel better doing that than if you eat either of your two options.
Plus- tinned ravioli???? Grim it's my husband's favourite food and was nearly a deal breaker Grin

I know I'm a total fun sponge. If the dominoes would make you truly happy, then I'd go for it.

OP posts:
MozzchopsThirty · 04/09/2019 16:44

I'm not sure any of it will make me happy
I've already eaten 5 shortbread biscuits in work.
FWIW I haven't gained at all and have been hood with food and exercise

I just feel like I want to sit in my pjs and eat rubbish and watch tv
I have no kids tonight either Smile

(Tinned ravioli and chips is totally comfort food Grin)

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/09/2019 17:09

Mozzchops well, there's a few ways to look at it isn't there?

  1. You've done really well to not gain despite having a shitty few weeks so one more day won't hurt. The emotional comfort to you of your comfort food might be worth it?
Or:
  1. All that hard work exercising is 'paying for' this comfort food so you maintain rather than lose- is it worth it?
Or:
  1. I just want it and I'm only human and it makes me feel better and it's only one day, and if I gain a pound then so what?

The only thing I don't want you to think is:

  1. I'm mozzchops and every time something shit happens in my life I punish myself for being a regular, fallible human being by stuffing crap food into myself to compound the fact that I am rubbish and tomorrow I will feel doubly crap because not only is all the shitty stuff still going on but now I've fallen off my diet again because this is what I do.

I am definitely a number 4. I am a terrible comfort eater, which is why I have taught myself ways to talk myself round. I'm not always successful! I'm really trying to be a 3. 3 is cool- she is in control, she isn't banning anything but neither is she punishing herself afterwards or thinking 'sod it' and going down that spiral of eating more and more rubbish. One meal out of 21 this week will not destroy your efforts so if you really want it and think it will make you feel better and not punish yourself for it then I say eat your pizza (or tinned ravioli ^) and feel better Thanks

(In the time it's taken to write this, you've probably already rung dominoes haven't you??! )

Riddleofthesands · 04/09/2019 17:11

Sorry you are having a shitty time Mozz. PJs and tv sounds lovely and one crap meal isn’t the end of the world. Is there a really tasty healthy meal you love? For me it would be a massive stir fry with plenty of ginger, garlic and chilli. Compromise might be to forget the calories but have good nourishing food. Fried eggs with the chips might be a bit better than the ravioli? Seconding Bears walk, some fresh air might lift your spirits.

MozzchopsThirty · 04/09/2019 17:21

Ooh I love egg & chips and have both at home Smile
Can I have baked beans too though???

Riddleofthesands · 04/09/2019 18:19

Yes of course, they are veg Smile and it’s not a low carb night. Now I want chips, eggs and fries. Hope you have a lovely evening.

MozzchopsThirty · 04/09/2019 18:31

Thank you @Riddleofthesands and @thenewaveragebear1983 for your support and not making me feel any worse I really appreciate that

I've gone for oven chips with beans and egg
I'm currently enjoying a glass of wine and probably won't drink anymore

My calories have been great, I'm doing 2:5 now and find the 800 through the week normally enjoyable and easy

It's a self care night Grin already in pjs just waiting on chips

Maccalenny · 04/09/2019 19:12

I think if you are in that kind of mood, and know you are going to eat something off plan, you might as well have a good think about exactly what might satisfy you. Otherwise, you nibble something, then a bit of something else, none of it really what you fancy. Then end up eating what you really wanted, but not enjoying it as by then you are not hungry because of all the previous snacking! That’s how it goes with me anyway. I’m best just to decide what I really want, and having it and enjoying it and getting it over with. Then put it behind me and back to the plan.

Maccalenny · 04/09/2019 19:13

Well done on the loss Bear. Hope the meal out was lovely.

Yoga day 4 done!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/09/2019 20:28

Thanks macca it was actually really nice. Not much choice for BSD as it was mostly pizza and pasta, but I had a chicken breast cooked in wine with Spinach and mushrooms and a side of broccoli. I did share a pud with dd. I agree about your philosophy too, if you want something and only that 1 thing will do, then sometimes it's best to just have it.

I'm really cranky and hormonal today, due on tomorrow. I could literally eat anything right now and am doing exactly as you described above, opening cupboards randomly as if some magical delicious low carb chocolate cake will have appeared there during the day. I would go to bed except I'm waiting for Dh to finish his work so we can watch the final episode of a series we've been watching. These are the hardest times- bored, hormonal, tired!

Tomorrow I'm going for a short run after school drop off, then I really must do some housework plus we have a small rodent issue in our loft which needs resolving! Food will be an egg salad (plus a few spare boiled eggs for Friday/weekend snacks) and dinner will be sausages
