Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 16

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/08/2019 21:26

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

I’ve been reading back over previous threads again - thread 8, Nov-Dec 2017 - interesting to see how everyone was coping with Christmas. Bear, you had just got your running machine!

Pajamagirl · 01/12/2019 11:56

Day 6 another 1lb down so 3 in total which is only a small amount
But I have tried on trousers that I could not breathe in previously and they are fine !!!!
Very happy with that as I seem to have lost ‘ bloat ‘ especially on waist and I can see progress
( especially after fri eve derail )
Happy Sunday

Maccalenny · 01/12/2019 13:02

Pyjamagirl you may not be seeing it on the scales so much yet, but sounds like you are really feeling the changes already - well done!

Maccalenny · 01/12/2019 17:40

I have a strict few days planned - I will have a portion of chicken stew, a ham salad and a couple of boiled eggs. I put all the food into Nutracheck and weirdly it came out a a perfect 800! There will be a few cups of coffee, so I will probably end up closer to 900. Four days of that, then an uncounted three days, then repeat for three more weeks, till schools finish for Christmas.

I’m seeing family for all the next few weekends, so there will be high-carb food offered. I haven’t decided if I will accept - if my four days are strict enough, it should offset a bit of weekend damage.

Pajamagirl · 02/12/2019 07:41

No change today but trying for a stricter week to get down to 13 Or under . I haven’t seen that number for at least a year .

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/12/2019 07:49

Well I eventually ended the week around 4lbs down in total. Starting December at 10.8. 5 - which given November has been the most stressful month in a long time is not too bad, and is probably slightly lower than I started Nov so an overall maintain.

I should manage a few fast800 days this week, my schedule is clear and the major stresses in my life have currently subsided for now....
I realised yesterday that I feel quite down, I'd masked it with my stress I think, but yes, November has tested me and I now need to focus on building up my mental strength with a bit of self- care

I am starting this today, lost a stone in the summer and have maintained but need to lose about another stone. I am 11 stone and 5ft 2. I would feel better at 10 stone.

I am going to try eating 2 meals a day- lunch and dinner, so today I am having a protein shake for lunch and a bought salad with mushrooms and cauliflower for dinner. I am keeping an eye on my protein and calories using my fitness pal, also staying lowish carb as well.

I am going to do exercise most days but nothing too OTT. Did an aqua class and yoga last week so going to keep that up and a long walk as well. Good luck to everyone else doing this, not so easy this time of year perhaps but also good way i thought of avoiding all the pies etc around this time of year

Maccalenny · 02/12/2019 18:37

Welcome orange and very good luck with your first few days. Hope today have gone ok for you.

Maccalenny · 02/12/2019 18:57

Closing the kitchen on about 950 calories....some dark chocolate crept in right at the end! Carbs were low, only about 25g, but fibre rather low too.

Hope everyone has had a good Monday!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/12/2019 20:44

Welcome @Orangeblossom78
I had a good day today. I didn't run, that's 3 days off now, but it's all part of my plan to stop being quite so harsh on myself. My food was great- just some ham and chorizo mid morning, a soy milky latte at lunch and then dinner was a beef burger with salad and a dairy free gratin with sweet potato and onion (which was weird, wouldn't buy again but it was heavily reduced in Tesco)

Had some frozen cherries, alpro Greek and peanut butter for pudding too, which was really tasty.

I've done 17k steps today even without a run so have been very busy.
Tomorrow I'm planning a longish run, maybe 10-12k, then my friend is coming over in the afternoon for a natter and to make a baubles wreath we've seen on Pinterest. Food will be a chicken or ham salad, and after work something fishy from the freezer with salad.

Same as yesterday , will have a good day today tho
Food prepped so good to go , no bad choices can creep in
Have a great day all

Orangeblossom78 · 03/12/2019 08:44

Thanks for the welcome, enjoying reading the posts. Just logged the calories protein etc in myfitnesspal for today, doing the same as yesterday with the protein shake for lunch and a bought salad with grains and some protein for dinner- sounds a bit boring but keeps it simple for now. Got a tendency to graze /snack on the children's leftover at dinner so this makes it easier in away for now, just to get started.

Good luck for everyone today.

Maccalenny · 03/12/2019 18:50

Good day again today. I’m on a training course tomorrow so need to take something portable with me, to avoid the beige buffet at lunchtime! Egg mayo with salad I think.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/12/2019 21:53

An ok day for me. I went for a 9k run so clocked up 21k steps in total. My food has been good too- just ham for lunch, a boiled egg and some peanut butter for snacks and then dinner was a gastro fish with salad and then some alpro with peanut butter and a passion fruit (literally the most delicious pudding ever)

Tomorrow I am teaching a new class in the afternoon, so will eat a small brunch before that, then dinner will be my PTA social (so a full Xmas dinner with starter and pud, and probably wine.....) - will need to do a short run to offset some of that!

Hello all

Welcome orange!

Sadly, I didn't get the job. Only two of us (from 50 applicants) at the second interview, so should be proud I got so far but, arse, it would have been a great job to actually get... I work in a v tiny sector, so jobs like this (next step up the tree, at great organisation, commutable) are like hen's teeth. sigh.

On the upside, scales finally moved, I am pretty much at my desired weight AND (more crucially) my blinking velvet party trousers fit. And so do every other pair of trousers in my new size. Tried a few on last Sat, looking for the perfect interview outfit, and some were disgusting but they all did up. Didn't get me the job though. (not that I'm bitter Grin)

So, I expect I will go back to lurking and wishing everyone well.

Maccalenny · 04/12/2019 04:22

Venus so sorry you didn’t get the job. You absolutely should be proud for getting so far, but it’s hard to feel positive straight afterwards isn’t it! Hopefully your confidence from how far you got at this interview, will help when something else does come up.

Enjoy those party trousers!

CatShapedCushion · 04/12/2019 05:09

Been managing to stick to a version of low carb/re-setting with great results by eating the following :3 eggs&1tomato midday&evening meal with a protein shake with psyllium husk&cucumber, celery sticks&a few bites of a protein bar in between.Almond milk in my tea..Taking chewable calcium&vitD ,multiVit&iron&evening primrose&cod oil capsules to supplement.been steadily losing 3-4lbs every week for the past 7weeks and dropped nearly2sizes..im finding it so easy to stick to as im not hungry at all&sleeping better..having a lack of variety is better as i just treat food as fuel rather than the main focus..Doing a2k hill walk on my treadmill every afternoon also..got so much energy&clear headed..allowing myself cheeses as my special xmas food(but will weigh these)&found sugar free ice cream in mint&double choc so can eat a few with spray cream with the dc😃

MsTSwift · 04/12/2019 07:03

‘ Rock those velvet pants ‘

Me ? Stayed same ... sigh
Waiting for a whoosh and tightening up on the days food ( still learning )
On holiday in sat so a few more off before then would’ve nice

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/12/2019 07:45

I was 10.6.5 today so that's about 2lbs off

OP posts:
thenewaveragebear1983 · 05/12/2019 07:01

Meal last night was really nice. Small portions though, which has saved me on the scales this morning as I've maintained.

Feel a little coldish this morning, with just a touch of a cough so hope I'm not coming down with something. I am heading out for a run this morning (I am very close to my target of 1000 miles and today could be the day if I do 6 miles!)

My food will be salad of some sort at lunch and a pork steak for dinner with veg

Have a great day

Pajamagirl · 05/12/2019 07:51

Same ( tho did have pasta and garlic bread with meal out) so counting myself lucky !
So KoKo today
( keep on keeping on )

Orangeblossom78 · 05/12/2019 08:38

End of first week for me, finding it OK, appetite and cravings seem to be going down. It might be a bit more challenging this weekend. Planning on keeping going with the midday protein shake as this is quite filling and finding it quite good- then a small portion of the same dinner as the rest of the family. (often veggie curry) Might order some of those zero noodles to go with it instead of rice.

I'm eating my evening meal before the rest of the family mid week then just having a cup of tea with them, a bit 'odd' but kind of helps with not hoovering up the leftovers! It is going straight in the food recycling bin!

MsTSwift · 05/12/2019 08:43

Getting abit fed up am being amazingly good but weight loss plateaued am stuck at 10.5 stone. Lost 1.5 stone since Oct 8th so cant complain and people are really noticing how different I look. Plus feel better and now normal bmi. But want to lose that last half stone!

Even didn’t have a bratwurst at a Christmas market but still no loss. Unfair!!

Orangeblossom78 · 05/12/2019 09:00

I was going to ask how are people finding the Christmas food around? I'm finding my sweet tooth is going a bit (have a bad one) which is helpful, DH keeps suggesting a Baileys though! Not easy. VV sweet

Maybe the plateau is the whoosh thing, were it stays and then goes at once.
