Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 16

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/08/2019 21:26

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Did you do measurements tswift? Sometimes you will be shrinking away but weigh the same, it's like you can't do both at the same time and your body has to catch up.

Just ran my 1000th mile this year!

Christmas food- I'm ok really but I do have to have a 'not yet' sort of mentality. Last night I had Xmas pud but I'm not going to crank open the chocs or mince pies yet. I think last year I waited until about 23/24 th Dec then had a week off plan, then got back on it. If you're constantly surrounded by tasty goodies (eg if you work in an office) where everyone's got stuff in the staff room that must be really hard.

MsTSwift · 05/12/2019 12:42

Avoiding all mince pies chocolates etc except abit at weekends. If I have a meal out etc Plano’s to fast that day and just have the meal and enjoy it so overall the calories for that day not too over

MsTSwift · 05/12/2019 12:42

Plan is to

Orangeblossom78 · 05/12/2019 16:34

This is a bit weird my hunger is totally gone. Just had a salad today at lunch (Halloumi cheese) 320 cals, all day but not hunger for my shake now. Or wanting cakes / cravings. Do others get this also? i think I did in the past but can't remember. Maybe this is a good way of dealing with the rich food around this time of year

thenewaveragebear1983 · 05/12/2019 16:57

Orange yep, that's the magic happening right there...

OP posts:
Orangeblossom78 · 05/12/2019 17:21

I'm thinking about making it as on my schedule to have today but haven't even got round to it yet, going to make DCs dinner now but don't fancy that either, maybe this is very handy for this time of year. I am thinking of continuing till actual Christmas eve and having a couple of days off then. But we will see!

Maccalenny · 05/12/2019 18:17

mstswift it absolutely will happen - you are trying to get your body through a set point that it likes and it will really try to resist! But you will get there.

Orange sounds like you have a good system going for weekdays. Hope the weekend will go smoothly for you too!

I had to go out of work for a meeting unexpectedly today, so grabbed something from the work kitchen as I left....which was a large lump of corned beef. On the plus side, it was very filling and I’ve not needed to eat again today! But not exactly a balanced couple of meals.

Maccalenny · 05/12/2019 18:18

Sorry I missed all the messages on the new page! My post probably makes no sense now.

Maccalenny · 05/12/2019 18:25

Bear congratulations on your 1000th mile! According to a very nice website I found, if you had been running straight from the Midlands you could have reached The Vatican (992 miles) or Lisbon (1011 miles) by now!

VenusInfers · 05/12/2019 20:40

Macca love that milage stat! And congrats Bear, that is some serious footwork!

Thanks for positive thoughts about my interview btw. Going to take the next few months to absolutely rinse the most benefit/experience/training out of the job I have with the aim of being number 1 next time.

(goes back to lurking...)

thenewaveragebear1983 · 05/12/2019 20:51

Thanks
Love the stats, thanks maccalenny

A lb down today - slowly but down so in the right direction .
On a two week holiday so not sure how that is going to go but will pick up when home and assess the damage ,, want to do some walks and swimming too so fingers crossed

Helena39 · 06/12/2019 09:49

Hi All,
Joining from tomorrow for 8 weeks, so will finish on the 1st of February. I don’t care about Christmas, all I care is that I am not feeling great and I need a change as I am eating non stop and I gained a lot of weight. I had tests done and they showed nothing wrong with me, so I concluded that it’s just me being a bored big, and this has to stop.
Have done FAST800 before with great results so I am happy to go back to it.
You are all amazing and I am enjoying reading your experience with these diets.

Riddleofthesands · 06/12/2019 10:46

Venus bad luck about the job, but you did get so close you should be encouraged.

Bear congratulations on 1,000 mile goal. I really should take up running/weights/pilates something but I am so lazy!

I haven’t weighed for a few day’s, have my period now so no point. It’s been madly busy here and I have been missing meals, getting in late and eating slices of cheese and having wine. No idea where I am at. Today’s goal is to eat a proper meal this afternoon with lots of veg. At school play tonight.

Maccalenny · 06/12/2019 17:46

Pyjama - hope you have an amazing holiday and that you are somewhere lovely! Remember that whatever happens, you now have a perfect way to sort it out when you get home and get back on track.

Helena welcome! You sound so positive and committed, I bet you are going to get some great results.

Another not very balanced day today for me....usual big breakfast, chilli today, then missed lunch so ate some cheese and ham at about 2.30. Had an apple and peanut butter, with cheese and cucumber at 4.30. Just had a bit of dark chocolate. It’s been like this all week, skipping lunch due to meetings - it’s just as well I eat my meals in reverse order to the rest of you sensible people, or I would never have a proper meal at all. I can’t face more than a small snack after about 5pm any more or I feel really bloated.

Orangeblossom78 · 06/12/2019 19:42

maybe sometimes it is nice not to plan and schedule everything.

Maccalenny · 07/12/2019 06:05

I agree Orange, but I think planning can be really important at the start, so you’re not having to make food choices when really hungry - that’s when temptation strikes!

I’m going to eat loads of veg and pulses this weekend, to make up for a fairly poor week nutritionally.

Maccalenny · 07/12/2019 06:50

Weekly weigh-in shows 0.4lb down this week overall, so I think my poorly planned week is showing a bit. Today is likely to be very off-plan as I’m visiting family. Back to it tomorrow, hoping to lose another couple of lb in the next two weeks, so that I might manage to stay in the 11s over the holiday.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/12/2019 07:20

I always have a much better week when I plan, and especially if I plan right down to the calories/portions/weights. It leaves zero room for any extras and I think I have the sort of mentality that choice makes it easy to go overboard.

I ended up having a bit of a day off yesterday. We went Christmas shopping and I had a nice grain salad with chicken at lunch, but then came home starving and tired and ate chocolate coins and then had fish and chips and wine!

My plan was to go to bootcamp this morning but I can't face the mud so I'm going to go for a run instead. Then taking dd shopping to choose her Christmas presents which will be horrible because town on a Saturday is grim.

I feel like I have drunk a lot these last few weeks, and would really like to not drink tonight- but Dh will so it's quite likely I will too! I'm already looking forward to my January detox!

OP posts:
Orangeblossom78 · 07/12/2019 07:33

My Dh has got in the Baileys which I am trying to avoid. Yes I see with the planning how it can be helpful. i guess I was meaning being kind to ourselves if we do have a day off it or whatever. I am still sticking with my protein shake and meal combo having both coming in around 350 cals which leaves room for milk and piece of fruit / veggies as well.

We had a nice curry yesterday we often have at the weekend, i just left off the rice. You basically fry chopped onion/garlic/chillies and curry powder in a bit of oil, then what you like prawns / fish/chicken/veggies and then mix about half a pint or milk with lemon juice and some salt in another pan. When it starts to curdle this mixes in the other pan. I think it is a Jamie Oliver recipe. Anyway it was nice.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/12/2019 09:43

The curdled milk sounds unusual orange, what does that do to the sauce? Interesting! If you miss rice with your curry you can have cauliflower rice instead, and also chapatti made with lentil flour, or poppadoms , are ok in small measures.
I love Jamie Oliver's recipes, his 30 min book has sone great recipes that are adaptable for this and so has his superfoods book.

OP posts:
Orangeblossom78 · 07/12/2019 10:11

It sounds a bit horrible but it is actually really nice- I also have tried this one and it was good too. Would be BSD friendly but maybe a small portion www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/vegetable-recipes/speedy-spinach-curry/

Orangeblossom78 · 07/12/2019 10:12

The sauce is not too rich but tasty

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/12/2019 14:54

I am going to try that, it sounds good!

OP posts:
Orangeblossom78 · 07/12/2019 16:16

Yes the last link posted is from the recipe book you mentioned. The 30 mins one, I have it also and had another look quite a few recipes there look BSD friendly. Just been to school fair and had 2 glasses mulled wine. Hmm
