Blood sugar diet and Fast800 thread 15

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/05/2019 07:34

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

This is it, Phoenix, it's about the many benefits of running. The whole series is really excellent though, very informative and all about health related topics.

Hi there. Have been doing this for about a week. Just wondered if you can help answer a question. Can you go over 800 cals like by 50? Or is that ok. Not suggestin 900 or anything. Sometimes i finish at 845. Is that acceptable? ThanksSmile

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/08/2019 12:47

Never yes, of course. You can do alternate days, 5:2, whatever you like really. The two weeks at 800 calories does get really fast results but isn't sustainable long term so you can work it out to find a way that suits you.

I’ve just downloaded the podcast ap so I can listen to this too. Thanks Bear.

Well done Phoenix on completing your assignment.

MozzchopsThirty same here. Friday was an unplanned cinema and fast food day here. Yesterday the wine and carbs flowed. Aiming for sensible eating today, drink some water and start again tomorrow. Embarrassingly I think this will be my 3rd start again announcement in a month. Problem is there is a real holiday atmosphere at home, every day seems to be an excuse to do fun stuff and good intentions get eroded.

neveradullmoment99 · 04/08/2019 13:29

Thanks @thenewaveragebear1983 but i really want to do 800 for at least 2wks but sometimes i go a little over and wondered if that would make a difference👍😀

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/08/2019 17:26

Never it shouldn't make too much difference, 900-1000 calories even as long as the food is right and you'll still lose weight but maybe not quite as fast

Thank you for the welcome!

Phoenix those scales look good. What do you mean they took 72hours to equalise? Is it not an accurate reading straight away?

Bear yes I've already noticed it feels the exact opposite to what SW promote. This seems to have more science behind why it works though, which I like. My attitude is already changing because now I know how my body reacts to food at different times and with/without carbs etc. It's fascinating.

Grey I did my measurement on MFP but disappointing they only do neck waist and hips. Does anyone know if the premium version gives more options? Or do you use different apps?

So today is my first proper day although I say that, I'm not counting calories religiously. Not weighing all veg etc. Just estimating. If I find results are slow then I will be more accurate.

Today looks like

11am - yoghurt/blueberries/chia seeds/ and a seed granola but should have been almonds except I didn't have any.

5.30pm - Salmon witht salt/paprika rub, cauliflower rice with Parmesan, spinach leaves and a bit of salad dressing. Olive oil used.

I started the day with peppermint tea, also had 2 tassimo costa lattes 😳 dropping these will be my biggest challenge, esp as a solo mum to a toddler! Also had a peach schnapps with diet lemonade. Now just having a cup of tea with milk then I think it's kitchen closed.

Remarkably I've not been as hungry as I thought. 230pm ish was hard as psychologically felt I missed lunch but it didn't last long.

I'm also amazed how satisfied I feel and how tasty the foods are, I guess that's the full fat?

Here's some pics of today's meals! Not insta worthy I'm afraid haha

Oh forgot to add that MFP is calculating it around 820 calories for the day. I keep thinking I must have forgotten to add something!!

Placemarking!

Gah! This is so annoying!!!

Etty I don't use mfp and mine lets me record lower calories without giving me a telling off. I used 'fat secret' and have just switched to a keto app as I'm now trying to keep the carbs lower and it calculates all the carb grams and links with Fitbit (but it is a paid app, £1 a month for 12 months) but both of these do allow a lower calorie allowance.

OP posts:
thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/08/2019 20:46

Closing the kitchen today on 1250 cais, 21g carbs, 22k steps (which included a 5.5km Run and hours of gardening) , so all in all, a pretty good day.

Tomorrow: Run first thing again, then lunch will be leftover tandoori roast chicken and salad, and dinner will be something with mince (maybe meatballs or chilli, not decided yet!), plus more hard graft in the garden.

OP posts:
PhoenixMama · 04/08/2019 23:06

@EttyG You can change the daily calorie amounts in your profile & you can add different things to measure too. I've paid for premium now but I did that so I could track my macros & changed my calorie counts & measurements before then.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 05/08/2019 21:23

Phoenix hope the move went well!

Closing kitchen today on 1400 cals, 40g carbs. Would have been less but I cracked and had a small scoop of ice cream while I was making cornets for the dc. I've done 21 k steps (6km run) and another full day grafting in the garden digging out a huge rhododendron bush, it's taken us two full days now and the monster is still not out!!

My period is still not here, I'm getting a tiny bit concerned about it- although I am pretty sure it's due to having an increase in exercise last month (I ran a lot and also did a 14 day hiit challenge) and I did have a mid cycle bleed too- so hoping it's that.

OP posts:
EttyG · 05/08/2019 21:30

I have finished on 858 cals today.

MFP is saying 59g protein, 70g carbs, 39g fat. Does this sound about right? Maybe try and gets carbs lower? I did have a Liberte LF yoghurt which was 12h carbs but I had already bought them so didn't want to waste.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/08/2019 09:50

Etty you might find 70g too high, lots of people aim to get below 50g. It's not explicitly stated though. If you eat the right foods and keep the calories to 800 then it doesn't matter if some days you have more carbs (eg lentils are quite carb heavy) and then other days have less. Great start though.

I was exhausted and hungry last night, and ended up grazing right before bed on a few rich tea biscuits (so bumping my carbs up!)- looking over my food I just hadn't eaten nearly enough fat during the day, so today I've factored in some oil at each meal, and avocado with lunch.

Hi Etty - I think your carbs are a little high. For day to day in the beginning 60g is usually the most, with people cutting it back even further if they're being very strict. I think Bear cut hers bank to 25g before her holiday.

I'm not counting right now due to the craziness of moving house. Moved in yesterday to discover the place is filthy, full of other people's crap and the oven doesn't work! Planned for a takeaway last night but not planned on takeaway every night! Hopefully it gets sorted soon!

What's weird about eating the old way is how bloated I am - not just my belly but ankles, etc too. Not loving it and can't wait to get back on plan asap!

Riddleofthesands · 06/08/2019 14:29

Hi everyone, my appetite is still on holiday size portions, stuck to principles yesterday but definitely went over on calories. Have downloaded a giving up alcohol ap (not sure it’s great so any recommendations v welcome), on day 2! DH has given up too. Today I am really trying to do fast 800 correctly for next two weeks and see what I can lose. Today is salmon and roast veg, we have a glut of yellow courgettes and peppers. Have a headache which is most unlike me, doing a homework schedule with kids, both their schools set work in several subjects. Also having work done on house for next few days. Sending hug to PhoenixMama, it will be worth it.

How is everyone else doing?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/08/2019 14:48

Riddle Dh and I used one called Drink less, it was recommended on that Adrian chiles documentary. I don't use it anymore but Dh still does and it's pretty good for what he wants

Hello, I'm new! 12st have lost half a stone already and need to lose about 3 and a half st more. Not sodding about tbh, I'm desperate to lose the flab as quickly as possible as I'm obese. I'm just having slimfast x4 a day.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/08/2019 17:18

Hi ismellbabies, welcome to the group! As I said on your other thread, i don't think anyone on here is currently doing slimfast shakes currently, although a bit further up the thread we did discuss them. How are you going to structure your day? How many calories in a slimfast? My concern with doing SF is that you'll miss out on how amazing your food can taste when you tune in to your tastebuds and appetite again. Would you consider the possibility of doing 2 meals as shakes and one as a proper meal?

OP posts:
ISmellBabies · 06/08/2019 22:01

Thank you! Slimfast is 204Cals per ready-made shake. I'm having one about 9am, 12, 3/4pm and then 6/7pm. It just takes away any guess work, any misjudgement, any temptation to have 'just a bit more'. It's my safety net that I feel I need at the moment. I don't cook, and I'm not really foodie tbh, so I'm quite happy with just shakes at the moment but I might change things up and swap for some dinner once I'm more settled into the fast 800 woe.

Feelingfortyisntfun · 06/08/2019 22:09

Would anyone else include broccoli in kcal? I’m suffering with hunger at bedtime cutting the carbs currently and wondered if I could have a whole head of broccoli with my salmon salad to help bill it out whilst not going over board on the kcal/carbs.

I know the new fast800 book says don’t count greens but I’m not sure they anticipate how much I can eat!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/08/2019 22:27

Feeling yes, I suppose in theory you could, but you might find that allowing extra calories to use for fats earlier in the day might be better and more satisfying than having 400g broccoli.

I had a really good day, but then went to circuits for 90 mins and when I got back Dh has cooked some freezer crap for tea so I ate that and totally blew my cals/carbs out of the water. Annoyed with myself, but I was just too hungry to wait and it's very rare that Dh cooks so I didn't want to argue. Period still late, about 9 days now, and I'm feeling really grouchy and hormonal now as well have having virtually no carb control when faced with them.

Tomorrow I'm going for a run at 10.30 with my friend so I'm planning to fast til then (have been eating breakfast this week which also doesn't help) and then have a light lunch as dinner tomorrow is a chicken stir fry with peanut sauce which is quite calorie heavy.
