Blood sugar diet and Fast800 thread 15

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/05/2019 07:34

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Phoenix hope you're ok Thanks

I'm sailing pretty close to the wind at the moment. Good intentions, good meals, but I'm in that horrible spiral of having daily secret pig-out sessions, literally ten minutes, But god I can eat a lot of calories in that 10 minutes! I seem to be doing it every day and it's rubbish. I'm under tdee each day, and I am writing everything down (even my illicit foods) but I don't feel in control and it doesn't feel good or like a treat, it feels like I'm a bit out of control and it's making me miserable.

My plan for tomorrow is to follow my bloody plan! I need to flick that switch that says 'no thanks' and actually stick to it. My little Ds was sent home sick today (he's absolutely fine) so can't go to nursery for 2 days, which makes things a little more tricky, but ideally I will fast til lunchtime, have salad or soup for lunch, and then dinner is homemade beef burgers.

Hope everyone's doing better than me!

@thenewaveragebear1983 just writing it out is probably very helpful, and you are being honest with recording it as well!

Hi
I've just started the fast 800 as a kickstart after eating and drinking lots for the past few weeks.
I'm going on holiday next week and want to feel better in my clothes

I'm skipping breakfast and eating lunch and dinner only between 12-8pm
I've cut out potatoes, bread, rice & pasta
Is this ok???

My sleep seems very broken, waking to drink water, use the toilet or just generally being awake. Also finding it hard to fall asleep! Is this normal?

Doing some weight training and 2 x cardio sessions a week

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/07/2019 07:54

Hi mozzchops, welcome! have you read the opening post of this thread? There's quite a bit of info in there, but it does help to have the book as all the science is in there. I find it quite hard to sleep sometimes if I've had a very low carb day, I think because it Ramps my metabolism up a bit and as an insomniac I'm quite sensitive to that anyway.

Just treated myself to this in the works, £6. They had another similar one too that was also nice looking. Be mindful with Keto as they can be very high calories as they love the lard/ghee and oil- but the basic premise of each recipe looks good and I can tweak for BSD. In particular there's lots of ideas for meatball type things made with mince and spices, which do well as mains and also lunches and are easy to portion out etc.

I'm feel better emotionally today but still not back on track food wise. I have a pretty free day tomorrow so am going to do a proper plan for the weekend & next week. Definitely feel like it's the lack of planning that's letting me down the most!

mommybear1 · 10/07/2019 16:00

Hi 👋🏻 new 800 starter here my DH and I need a kick to get ourselves back on the straight and narrow so I brought the book, read it, understand the theory now it's time to put it into practice Grin. We started yesterday and had a good day I really like the flavours of some of the dishes we had - pesto pasta in a jar and lemon and thyme chicken skewers 😋. Glad I have found this thread as I didn't realise you could skip breakfast etc I thought from the book he recommended eating the three time a day in the time period but if staying under 800 becomes a struggle bye bye porridge Grin. I'm feeling hungrier today but spurred on by the scales this morning so staying strong, which with a toddler who is snacking like no tomorrow is easier said than done Grin.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/07/2019 16:48

Hi mommybear, nice to see some more bears round here Bearyes, you don't need breakfast, and I find it starts me off eating for the day so I do avoid usually. I also have a toddler dustbin and it can be tricky so I try to keep things like cubes of cheese, cherry toms, cucumber sticks right at the front of the fridge so that's what I offer him, and then it's not so tempting.

I've had a very good day so far, only eaten ham and avocado for lunch, lots of water, lots of walking and just did 7km on my treadmill as Ds is off school ill so I can't get outside! I gave a touch of a detox headache, so clearly I'm quite low carb today!

I'm Day 3 today
I'm soooooo tired but not sleeping well
MFP says I've had 840 calories today, all I've eaten is chicken salad and tonight salmon fillet & stir fry veg

How are you all not starving??

mommybear1 · 10/07/2019 19:37

Lots of water @MozzchopsThirty that's what I found really helpful

mommybear1 · 10/07/2019 19:38

Great tips @thenewaveragebear1983 sounds like you're having a good day! I like the toddler dustbin tips Grinthank you

MozzchopsThirty · 10/07/2019 19:48

@mommybear1
I've probably drunk about 3 litres today already

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/07/2019 19:48

Mozz the key to not being starving is, I find, eating 2 decent meals so rather than 'saving' calories for dinner, have a good lunch with good amounts of fat. I then have dinner quite early, always before 6, so I tend to eat my two meals only 5/6 hours apart.
Lots of water, lots of green veg, keep busy! The first few days are tough, but it really does get easier. Oddly, I'm less hungry if I eat less, and definitely less hungry if I skip breakfast.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/07/2019 21:49

Closing up the kitchen on 994 cals. 50.5g carbs, 21k Steps (7km was a run). Pretty pleased with that, feel like I found my groove today!

Tomorrow: another day locked in with Ds and his bug! Various domestic jobs planned, lunch will be a pre-made veg and lentil soup, and I'm going to try to leave it as late as i can, then dinner will be tandoori chicken and salad. I'm out with the school mums in the evening so will probably definitely have at least one or two gin and tonics, so really must keep the calories down during the day.

I agree re breakfast
I adore breakfast but I've found since 5:2 that if I don't eat it I can go much longer and I snack less

What would you suggest for a good filling lunch?

northernlassthree · 11/07/2019 06:49

Hello everyone. I’ve been dabbling with this duet for a couple of weeks. Found two consecutive days of 800 cals last week made me very faint and unable to think properly so backed off. This week I’m on day 3 of following the time aspect but logging roughly 1000 cals a day which feels much better (to start with anyway). I’ve read through the entire thread and found it massively helpful and motivating so thought I should stick my hand up and join in. I’m trying not to think too deeply about how much I want to lose (it tends to put me off when I’ve a long way to go) but I’m currently 13.5st, have been overweight (and obese) almost all my life - don’t remember ever being a healthy weight. I’d basically like to be and feel healthy - and in control. I’ll shut up now 😁

14 day hiit challenge? Anyone fancy it? www.mumsnet.com/Talk/exercise/3634950-14-day-hiit-challenge-anyone-fancy-it

I've just started this thread if anyone wants to join me? I'm aiming to do 20 minutes hiit every day for 14 days (you could do anything you like, YouTube vids, walk/run intervals etc) before I go on holiday! There's loads of health benefits to high intensity training and they go hand-in-hand with the benefits of intermittent fasting , plus it's quick (30 mins max a day). Great for beginners too as your 'high intensity' is as high as you go, not anyone else.

OP posts:
GreyBasket · 11/07/2019 08:01

@thenewaveragebear1983 I would but I can't walk still after my extreme intensive hiit class on Tuesday 😆😁

I needed to start much slower I think!

@thenewaveragebear1983 My children are laughing at me because I can't walk up and down stairs 🤦🏻‍♀️

I have just weighed myself and I have lost weight though, so I do need to just keep going.

I need more fiber in the diet though.

Riddleofthesands · 11/07/2019 11:21

Hi everyone, I have been doing what I always do, happily skipping breakfast, 2 scrambled eggs or salad for lunch, protein and veg for dinner, pretty saintly. Then the wine appears and next thing you know it’s off to the fridge for a cheese sandwich, or crackers and dips or several bags of crisps. I have lost a little weight but need to put in a couple of proper 800 days now. Will also go for a jog, can’t call it a run as the dog can over take me just walking past. I might also ask DS (athletic teenager) to give me a 5 minute weights lesson for my arms. He keeps ticking me off when he sees me with wine and crisps and gives reminders about beach body goals so I think he needs to get more involved in the process. I will report back this evening. 10 days to holiday, yikes.

GreyBasket well done on your exercise, hope you loosen up as the day goes on.

PhoenixMama · 11/07/2019 14:58

Much, much better day today mentally. Went to COOK and stocked up on under 300 cal meals that I can just stick in the microwave - got so many busy days coming up that I need easy, and frankly there's nothing wrong with that!

Not sure I can do the 14 days Hiit challenge just because of the way my next 2 weeks are but am definitely looking to get back to running this weekend. DD wants to go swimming as well, which is my idea of hell but will do it because I love her - although need to quickly buy a new suit as my old one is waaaaay too big! (yay!)

BloomedAgain · 11/07/2019 19:56

I think I'm verging on saving my calories for dinner (though I doubt I'll end up doing one meal a day). A couple of eggs seems to keep me going during the day. I did ease myself into calorie reduction gradually as my initial attempt was too much of a shock and I couldn't sustain it. Hopefully I'll manage to keep it up now.

mommybear1 · 11/07/2019 21:07

Day 3 done had a lovely chicken pepper stir fry 😋 for dinner and have lashed the water 😂. I'm not sure I'm ready for a 14 day HIIT this week but I may try next week 🤞🏻

PhoenixMama · 11/07/2019 22:19

@bloomedAgain Be careful saving up calories in the beginning, it often makes things pretty tough on your body.

Also for all you new folks - make sure you're getting enough protein and keeping your carbs low (most of us try to stay under 60g of carbs at the most).

I've had a look at my numbers again and for the last 3 weeks I've been losing the same 4lbs over and over again - each week has the same high and the same low which is bloody frustrating. I know I haven't been strict enough but when I add all of those stupid pounds up i'd be at my goal by now!

Not entirely sure what the weekend will hold, think I'll be over slightly most days, but am making a plan for next week already! I want to start seeing movement just down, not like I'm on a trampoline!

I wonder how much of this is because I've now done 5 months of this woe, do I need to stop for a bit? Is my body protesting? I've definitely still got fat to burn but maybe I've been restricting for too long?
