Blood sugar diet and Fast800 thread 15

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/05/2019 07:34

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Ok last week ended up being a bit of a write off for various reasons so I'm starting from scratch today, week 1 day 1. I'm off to Aldi in a bit and trying to put a shopping list together. Does anybody have any recommendations from there? Anything quick and easy is welcome!

GreyBasket · 08/07/2019 10:26

@Maccalenny I have downloaded nutracheck and am on my weeks trial. Thank you!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 08/07/2019 10:34

Glitch I've just got back from aldi, I tend to stick to 'ingredients', I buy lots of different cold meats etc. I find the cheese and Greek yoghurt very good (although currently I'm off the dairy). Steer clear of the gimmicky 'high protein' and Paleo ranges as I find they have a lot of carbs. Their pouches of lentils (with the uncle ben's rice type things) are also very nice- they are higher in carbs but as long as they don't contain rice I find them ok, and you can make a quick tea by stuffing peppers or beef tomatoes with them.

Also a few tips for new starters- take your measurements/photo/weight or all three. Trust me! You don't have to share it on here.

Get plenty of fat in to see you through the detox phase. If you're really struggling then allow more calories at first, to allow extra fat, but try try try to get low carb and sugar free. It does get easier.

Drink plenty water and also a little bit of salt added to your food can really help too.

Good luck!

Mmmm. I need to summon up the courage to take my waist measurement 😔

But a good tip...

PhoenixMama · 08/07/2019 12:30

Hi all! Welcome newbies!

Well another weekend disaster here - mostly booze related - I was drinking wine like it was water! Plus BBQ and birthday cake for DD and 6 girls sleeping over which meant very, very little sleep.

And on top of all that my PTSD acted up and I had a horrific flashback, which has thrown me for 6. Up 2lbs this morning but that will just be the booze and I'll be back at it after I recover today!

Riddleofthesands · 08/07/2019 12:36

Ok, I am starting today. I have been making half hearted efforts all year. I have the book and really like the simple recipes. My downfall is wine and late night snacks. I am on holiday on 20th July and can’t do up the zip of my size 14 wetsuit. Panic stations! I need to lose 7 lbs fast. Starting weight is 10 st 1 lb, my ultimate goal is 8 st 7 lbs by September. I will also take measurements today and write down everything I eat.

BloomedAgain · 08/07/2019 13:01

May I derail and ask where your wetsuit is from?
I find it easiest to stick to a boiled egg salad lunch and then get more adventurous for dinner (when I'm hungriest).

GreyBasket · 08/07/2019 13:15

@PhoenixMama and @GlitchStitch okay, so we are all on day 1 😁

GreyBasket · 08/07/2019 13:16

Sorry, no it's @Riddleofthesands who is on day 1 too. That's great. I feel like I have someone else starting today too!

Riddleofthesands · 08/07/2019 14:32

Hi Grey and Glitch, measured my waist, around belly button relaxed was 35 inches. A lot of fat around my middle.

Bloomed my wetsuit is C Skin brand, got it 3 years ago in a tiny surf shop in Cornwall, I just use it for body boarding/swimming. It was the only one they had that fit is the main reason I bought it. My kids can surf and wear Billabong, they look great in theirs!

PhoenixMama · 08/07/2019 15:10

Not my first day lol, but first week of Month 5! It's getting much much harder to lose now, although even with some very up & down weeks I lost 6lbs last month.

I'm going off booze for the next few weeks - I have to move house & have uni deadlines & I'm not going to be ok unless I get back to being strict.

GreyBasket · 08/07/2019 15:11

I am 36in round my waist and 11stone 4.

I am putting this down so I keep going with this and don't give up.

I had success a couple of years ago with 5:2 but stress and work and other worries meant I have regained everything.

I look and feel best just under 9 stone and so that is my aim.

GlitchStitch · 08/07/2019 15:56

I will try to find tape measure later to do my waist, my weight is 11st 5lb. I went to Aldi and got some lovely stuff, had mackerel for lunch and will have chicken tonight either with mediterranean veg or salad. I've also bought the lentils to try, thanks thenewaveragebear!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 08/07/2019 20:57

The curried chickpeas are also really nice!

I have had a pretty disastrous day as I went for lunch with my mum and Ds, but dm brought her dog along which meant there was only one place to eat (a coffee shop) and the choices were pretty much sandwiches/panini etc. When I got back and checked the online menu, the sandwich I'd had was over 600 calories!!! So even though I had a light tea, my carbs and cals were through the roof.

I did 16k steps though including a 5km hiit workout using my treadmill and weights. Tomorrow should be better food wise, I've been to the supermarket and it's all planned out plus I'm stuck at home tomorrow as we're having a carpet laid so no opportunity for unwanted carbs.

It's bloody annoying when there's no options available, it's one thing to choose to have sandwiches, it's very different when it's imposed upon us

Hope everyone has had a good day! How are the new started getting on?

Maccalenny · 08/07/2019 21:05

Welcome to all the new folks...if you can stick with it for the first week, you will be so motivated by your weight loss that you won’t look back!

PhoenixMama · 09/07/2019 10:49

I'm having by a really tough time of it right now. Bought the new cook book so hoping that inspires me. Emotionally I'm not well and I really feel like I need carbs to keep going which, strictly speaking, is probably not true!

rmckee518 · 09/07/2019 12:10

Today's my 1st day 😊 I lost 6.5 pounds in the last 2 weeks following 1700 cals so excited to see what I can do on 800 ... are yous doing the 8 hour eating slot too with 16hour fast? My book should arrive tomorrow

Have around 4stone to lose so hopefully this will be a good kickstarter

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/07/2019 13:24

Welcome rmckee. I find the plan considerably easier if I stick to an 8 hour window, usually having lunch and dinner and skipping breakfast. I don't do it religiously though, but I do notice I have a better day when I do.

GlitchStitch · 09/07/2019 13:26

I'm hungry, cranky and have a rotten headache and it's only day 2. Wish I didn't love food so much Sad

PhoenixMama · 09/07/2019 13:32

@glitchstitch Drink loads of water and up your salt, it will really help you get through!

GlitchStitch · 09/07/2019 13:39

Thanks, doesn't help that I've got workmen here hammering and very whingy kids today! I will make sure I add salt to everything.

GreyBasket · 09/07/2019 14:06

I did a really intense work out this morning. It was WAY more than I did even when I felt super fit.

I am eating some leftovers of a butternut squash, kale and chickepea turmeric stew I made the other day for lunch.

And I have celeriac and cauliflower steaming away to make mash with later as I pulled a cottage pie base out the freezer. The key for me with this will be not to eat very much of it!

It will get easier once I have finished cooking with what I have. I bought the 800 cookbook on kindle yesterday and am already planning a few things for later in the week.

GreyBasket · 09/07/2019 14:07

@GlitchStitch I am expecting mine to hit tomorrow 😩

Keep drinking!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/07/2019 17:13

Salt can help for headaches. It's basically carb flu, your body is detoxing wildly and it can be tough. If you're really hungry and struggling, eat more calories of fat- some avocado, some cheese, a chicken breast, olives etc. It's not supposed to be a punishment, there's plenty time to do 800 calories and low carb after a few days once you've detoxed. The first few days can be very tough as your every cell is crying out for it's 'fix' but honestly, trust me, in a few days you'll feel amazing!

It's like the scene in trainspotting where Renton barricades himself into the room with just mushroom soup.....funnily enough, my Dh and I often will say to each other in a very cliched Scottish drawl 'I'm off the skag' when one of us is doing some sort of health kick.
