Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Just weighed 10 stone 8. Only put on two pounds over Christmas but I am SHORT and look puffy, unhealthy and wrong for my build. Still better than I expected though.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/01/2019 10:07

Welcome all!

I officially gained more weight this weekend that I did in the whole of December. BlushAt least all the Christmas chocolate is now 'disposed of'

Definitely up for a strict week this week, I am going to try to have at least 1 day at 800 as per the new fasting book but I do really struggle as I run so much. But I'm aiming for it at least. I haven't finished the new book yet but I did have a quick peek at the menus and recipes and they look good.

And carol give him a swift kick for that! Keep that photo though because you might want it for comparison in a few weeks.
My Dh is the opposite- so terrified of upsetting me he claims that he didn't think I looked overweight in some really awful holiday photos. I was a bit Hmm- I've lost 3 stone and you don't think I look any different?????

Very glad to hear he is your ex Carol, good luck with BSD. My DH sticks firmly to "your only problem is you are bloody gorgeous" no matter what weight I am. I am a real plain Jane btw!

RubySparkles · 07/01/2019 16:47

Some great tips on here, thank you.

I have the BSD book and started yesterday.

My goal is to lose 20lbs, but I'm going to set a target of a stone in the eight weeks, and then take it from there.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/01/2019 18:20

Closing the kitchen on 1058 cals, 43g carbs. 14k steps, 7.5k run.

Successful day- just need to not be in the kitchen this evening looking for extras! Going to have a nice hot bath I think instead.

adamnfinecupofcoffee · 07/01/2019 18:27

Oooo yum I love hard boiled eggs- but yes a bit anti social for parents' evening Grin nuts and green tea it is then!

I found a fresh Parmesan chicken breast meal in Lidl at the weekend. 1g of carb and no added sugar! Going to try it tonight- too shattered to cook up anything else.

I was worried I wouldn't be able to do my job whilst on 800 cals (Secondary Drama teacher) but it's actually quite nice not to be obsessed with food and feeling the lows of a sugar crash after break time snacks etc.

adamnfinecupofcoffee · 07/01/2019 18:28

Omg new a 7k run! I can't even manage 8,000 steps and I taught all day on my feet Blush

CarolDanvers · 07/01/2019 18:30

Well I managed it and honestly it wasn't that bad. I kept as many calories as possible for the main meal at 4.30 pm. Salmon salad and some Chinese prawn dumplings and I feel really full now. 831 calories all together. I am going to try to do that from now on, so no more than 200 calories for a brunch and then dinner at 4.30/5 pm. As long as I keep busy during the day I don't really notice.

CarolDanvers · 07/01/2019 18:31

Oh and 15596 steps Shock

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/01/2019 18:57

Adamnfine I am like the Duracell bunny, I am always on the go. I never did any exercise until last year when I started running but now I love it, I've totally got the bug!

Carol I find your way the most effective, I like a big dinner and I find I sleep better if I've had a big meal at 6pm. You really do get used to eating less, try and have fat and protein with your brunch as that will keep you going longer even though the actually quantity looks small.

My Dry January has meant I've eaten more crisps and chocolate than I should have.

Will try hard this week. I have a bad cold so feeling rough.

onanothertrain · 07/01/2019 19:27

750 calories today, less than 30g carbs.
Bought two new jillian Michaels dvds i know, I spoil myself so also completed day 1 of 6W6P.

MelanieCheeks · 07/01/2019 20:51

Happy enough to have got through the day with loads of water. Now sipping a very satisfying turmeric herbal tea, after enjoying the Japanese omelette from the recipe book.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 07/01/2019 23:33

I ate a Skyr and a hardboiled egg for breakfast, a slice of ham, two tomatoes and an apple for lunch and a vegan burger, small scoop of roasted cauliflower, 40gms of soya beans and 60 gms carrots for dinner. I estimate that's around 700 calories. Lots of green tea and 2 black coffees, plus about 2 litres of water.

Funnily enough I dont feel hungry. Ds2 demolished lots of cheese after dinner which is usually my weakness but I didn't feel tempted. I hope the not being tempted lasts for the full 8 weeks!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 08/01/2019 08:15

Gah, I have the dreaded Norovirus. Feeling very delicate and sorry for myself and currently can't even keep water down. Envy

OP posts:
Bluestitch · 08/01/2019 08:44

Norovirus, you poor thing. Hope you're able to rest.

I've just weighed myself, 6lb off after first week. The weekend was a total write off so pleased to have still lost a decent amount as well as annoyed with myself because it could have been more! Nevermind, onto the new week.

Gymntonic · 08/01/2019 08:45

Oh no bear. Hope you feel better soon.
Had a decent start to week. Eating the right foods and upping water intake. Not worrying too much about calories at the moment - just focused on weaning myself off carb- rich foods.
Getting a shopping list together too. I drink my morning tea with a splash of unsweetened soya milk. Pretty low in carbs and tastes better in tea than nut milks IMO. Calories are negligible with regard to fasting

Gymntonic · 08/01/2019 08:48

Anyone trying out recipes from the book yet? I fancy the curried cauliflower dahl thing and probably have the ingredients in already if I use frozen cauliflower

howhowhow · 08/01/2019 13:03

I am so hungry. All I can think about is food. What am
I doing wrong?

I had 2 poached eggs, 25g of spinach, 3 cherry tomatoes and 2 slices of ham for breakfast and. I'm still starving.

onanothertrain · 08/01/2019 13:15

bear oh no poor you, on the bright side it's good for weight loss 😕
Blue well done you!
How are you drinking enough?

Westwing1 · 08/01/2019 13:25

How if you like pilchards or sardines I find a tin of these very satisfying, or smoked mackerel, otherwise a few nuts or celery sticks with humous or peanut butter. Don't worry about going over 800 kc, I would just focus on staying away from the really bad white carbs. Your appetite will adjust over time.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 08/01/2019 13:43

Howhowhow when you first start out it can be a substantial difference in quantity so you can be left feeling hungry. Drinking a warm drink, even just warm water can help. Also increasing your fat and protein will be the key to lasting til your next meal. I agree with west as well, if you're really really hungry, then increase your calories to give yourself a few hundred extra, but use them wisely on protein or fat.

OP posts:
howhowhow · 08/01/2019 15:07

That makes sense. I haven't given in yet!! I've got 5 stone to lose and try not to look at myself in mirrors. I'm sickened by what I have allowed to happen to me.

I'm convinced this is going to work though so am determined to stick with it. I'm drinking loads but still have a headache.

I'm going skiing on Friday (which will be the start of my third week). I'm not the best skier so won't be going all out but it is still energetic. Should I stick to the 800 (that's my plan). Any tips for snacks I can eat safely.

CarolDanvers · 08/01/2019 16:52

950 today. I was absolutely ravenous when I woke up this morning and had to eat something though would have preferred to wait till 11.00/12.00, as I find the earlier I eat the more I eat! Anyway just had evening meal and full so hoping those extra calories will tide me over in the morning so I can wait till brunch/lunch time to eat. I'm not too down about it, still kelt under a 1000 calories Smile
