Blood sugar diet thread 13

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Look out for!

howhowhow · 05/01/2019 14:12

I'm starting out. The book arrives tomorrow. Tonnes of weight to loose but I'm starting with a 2 stone off goal.

Can I eat balsamic vinegar? The carb looks high but you only have a little bit......

thenewaveragebear1983 · 05/01/2019 17:03

I think the issue with artificial sweeteners is partly to do with your tastebuds still craving sweetness, and partly to do with insulin resistance. If you ate, for example, a yoghurt sweetened with aspartame, there is evidence to suggest that your body releases insulin in response to the sweet flavour. As there is then no glucose in the blood, the insulin has nothing to do, so you have insulin in your bloodstream for a period of time until it's reabsorbed by your body. When you have insulin in your blood you are in fat storage mode- you cannot burn fat in this 'zone'. So, you are effectively limiting the time you Are using your stored fat for energy. Now that's not so bad if it's a one off treat, but if it's a regular dose several times a day ( such as if you drink 3 cans of diet pop a day) then it's easy to see how it could play havoc with your insulin control.

It's exactly the same as the theory behind stopping snacking- every time you eat, insulin is released. So if you consume your daily calories in two big meals, or if you consume your calories in 10 little 'bites' or snacks, there will be a difference in how long you have free insulin, and in turn it will affect your weightloss. It's exacerbated by the fact many of us are insulin resistant and release far more insulin that we need anyway (this will quite rapidly improve once your visceral fat is gone)

Thanks bear that makes sense.

I've now got another dilemma - I'm off to see my mum tomorrow and she's just rung to say that another relative will be there and she's booked the Chinese Restaurant in the evening for a meal for all of us. I don't know what I can eat, if anything! I might skip lunch so that I can compensate for the evening, and I won't drink alcohol but I can't think of anything on the menu that will come in under 500 calories!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 05/01/2019 18:02

Oooh Chinese is hard because everything is in sweet sauce! From the takeaway I often have crispy duck and only have one or two pancakes with lots of duck; ours do a stir fried vegetable mix which is basically just veg and oil, no sauce? You could ask for that sort of thing with either chicken or prawns added maybe? Restaurants usually go out of their way to accommodate dietary requests especially when they cook from fresh, so I'd just ask. The worst they can do is refuse.

I would have had a brilliant day, army boot camp this morning, Bacon avocado and feta for brunch, lentil and quorn bake for dinner. Marvellous. Except I just went and ate about 6 chocolate biscuits, and raided the kids sweets boxes, all in a 10 minute feeding frenzy and i wasn't even hungry, it was just pure carb-craving and it got the better of me. Probably 800 calories and a million carbs.

Bluestitch · 05/01/2019 18:21

Urgh I stuck to it religiously for 4 days, didn't go over 900 calories. Then today came on period (they are very heavy, take strong meds, feeling rough), I reached for the comfort of lots of toast. Very cross with myself, and mother nature who I think is trying to sabotage me! Hoping I can be back on track tomorrow and not blown my progress too much, may have a weigh in just to check, somehow managed to avoid the scales so far.

Bluestitch · 05/01/2019 18:22

Would Fu Yung be any good from the Chinese? It's basically an omelette I think.

adamnfinecupofcoffee · 05/01/2019 19:33

Ooo Chinese - I wonder what is BSD friendly?

Just reading all your posts on diet drinks and I had two diet cokes last week- must hit that on the head. I can get addicted quite quickly to Diet Coke- having 5-6 cans a day at points Blush

EmmaGrundyForPM · 05/01/2019 20:23

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'll skip the starters and order a mixed veg if they do it. And I'll have to refuse any rice!

PenelopeFlintstone · 06/01/2019 00:11

I've read that the diet drink and insulin thing has been debunked now. That must be why M.Moseley allows them.

Gymntonic · 06/01/2019 15:40

Coming over to join you and be inspired by all your fantastic efforts.
Lost a couple of stone on veggie version of bsd a year ago. Have between a stone and stone and a half to lose now. At upper end of healthy BMI but am 5.11 and look my best at 11 to 11.7 stones. Following 800 fast model mostly as it matches what has worked for me in the past. Running quite a bit atm so not too worried if I go up to 1000 calories some days.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/01/2019 16:44

Gym welcome. I run a lot too and I just cannot do 800, my body literally fights me. I am reading MM fast 800 (new book out) and I think it might be what I've been looking for in terms of maintenance.

This weekend has been nothing short of disastrous, I've slept terribly, eaten crap and I feel miserable too. Starting afresh tomorrow.

OP posts:
Gymntonic · 06/01/2019 17:08

Thank you bear. I've only read the press resumes of fast 800 so far, but it seems very close to the way I lost weight last year. Traditional lchf made me ill but too many, even wholemeal carbs, and weight loss stalls and I chunk up. Pulses, veg, "green" carbs and sensible fats work for me.
Looking back over MFP, it seems that as long as I keep below 1200 calories and exercise reasonably then I lose at a decent rate.
Thinking of rejoining running club but might get diet established first.
Day two today and just feeling a bit sleepy now. Probably need to drink more. Body seems to have some memory of eating this way and not craving anything really. Off to boil a ridiculous number of eggs to get me through work tomorrow 😁

Hangryfastjo · 06/01/2019 17:14

Hi All would love to join you as I’m starting the fast 800 seriously tomorrow.
I have a couple of questions. In this new book he talks about being low carb, but doesn’t give an amount to stay under.
I ask because the meal replacement shakes I use I mix with milk and this wouldn’t be low carb.
I also like a coffee in the morning but if I add milk would this break the 12 hour fast?
I’m happy to try almond milk with the shake and have a black coffee to keep the headaches at bay!
Thanks for any help

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/01/2019 18:07

Hangry welcome!

There is no carb limit on this plan. The carbs you take in Are naturally limited by the 800 calorie limit, and the complete 'ban' (for want of a better word!) of certain high carb foods (potatoes, rice, pasta, sugar, tropical fruit, grains (some do eat small amounts), bread, flour). If you don't eat these things, and you stick to 800 calories you'll be low enough in carbs. Some do work to an arbitrary 50g carb limit, but I find it can work the other way and be used to 'allow' certain foods. However, the plan does work better if you avoid the easy digested, High fructose, high GI carbs.

Technically your splash of milk in your coffee is calories but I'm not sure that 1 small dose of milk will affect your fast. I drink coffee all Morning and don't usually eat til lunch, I have to admit I've never considered whether that breaks the fast or not?! I'd be more concerned about the possible sugar and or sweetener in your shake than the milk- lactose isn't really a huge issue on this plan as it's fructose really we're avoiding. Most commercial shakes are quite sweet tasting and I've yet to find one that didn't have added sugar or sweetener.

Cooked a roast for the family today and although they smelt delicious- I did not miss the potatoes and yorkiesShockShock
I had chicken breast meat, roasted parsnips and homemade cauliflower cheese (keto friendly) did have a splash of gravy!!

Scales say 10lbs off in 11 days. I have parents evening on Thursday- back to back appointments with parents for 3.5 hours! I must resist the biscuits and chocolates. What low carb snacks could I take with me to make it more bearable???

I also made the red pepper and squash soup from MM BSD recipe book- grilled some halloumi and threw it in! Yum!!!!!

Hangryfastjo · 06/01/2019 18:31

Thanks bear, that’s really helpful. I think I will just have black coffee in the morning and one with milk in the afternoon and count the calories.
The meal replacement shake is from the protein works and I got it a while ago when I was doing low carb, as it was the one with the least added.
Thanks again for your help and quick reply, I think I will hang out here for the next few weeks, it seems the right group and really supportive 😀😀

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/01/2019 19:07

Hangry I like a shake, especially when I'm starting a new round of being strict. It stops me thinking about food. I Make my own because I never found any that were sugar free- I use almond milk, frozen radpberries, frozen spinach, maca powder, peanut butter powder and yoghurt. In fact, I might make one tomorrow, I could do with a few days on the straight and narrow!

850 calories today, better than yesterday when a trip to the pub ended with a pizza. Oops 😳

EmmaGrundyForPM · 07/01/2019 05:07

Adamnfinecupofcoffee my go-to low carb snacks are nuts. Not low calorie though. Also hard boiled eggs but that might be a bit antisocial at parents evening!

I made it through the Chinese meal last night semi successfully. No starter, jasmine tea and then 'sizzling chicken" without rice. Very bland but possibly more calories than I should have had. You dont know what willpower is until you've sat in a restaurant with an empty plate whilst your fellow diners scoff crispy duck and drink wine! We then went back to mum's and they ate the last of the Christmas chocolate whilst I watched. Luckily I don't really like chocolate.

Westwing1 · 07/01/2019 08:46

Hi, I have been eating lots but stuck to Dry Jan, absolutely chuffed, really serious about going dry for a few months now.

This week is going to be a proper by the book BSD week. I am looking forward to it, lots of fish and veg. Tired of meat as we had so much of Christmas/New Year. Food diary ready, 800 kc it is. Hope everyone has a good week.

CarolDanvers · 07/01/2019 08:48

@thenewaveragebear1983 thanks for the link Smile.

Starting today after my charming ex H told me how fat I looked in Christmas photos he saw Hmm. I was meaning to anyway but that's given me the shove I needed. I have done a similar low calorie diet before and always found it effective. Going to read the thread now. Am going for the 800 calorie a day fast track as detailed in the new book.

Westwing1 · 07/01/2019 08:53

Weighed, 10 lbs to lose, have gained 4lbs over Dec/Jan and also setting new goal for 2019 as I never lost a layer of blubber around my middle even when at goal weight in 2018. I think kicking the wine will help a lot.

MelanieCheeks · 07/01/2019 09:49

Hi all! Did the horrified stand on scales this morning after all the Christmas indulgences. 11 stone. Aiming to get under 10 and will then reassess. I’ve done 5:2 and low carb before, so I’m looking forward to learning about this variation.
