Blood sugar diet thread 13

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

A bit of salt can help with headaches too. If you like bovril, a spoon of it in a cup of hot water helps.

Day 1 of round 2 or is it 3 finishing on 800 calories and 46g carbs.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/01/2019 20:18

Onanother niiiiiiiiice, on the nose!

I had a 'moment' earlier with some cheese, and I was already slightly over to begin with, so I'm closing the kitchen on 1450 cals and 67g carbs. Not too horrific as I aim for 1200, but still. Not exactly great for day 2!!

18k steps, ran 7.5km this morning and just ran 1k to circuits class and back so I've definitely felt the burn today. Hoping to do my long run tomorrow, 15k+ depending on the weather and my dodgy foot. Now to keep me out of the kitchen I'm off for a hot bath!

Hi

I've just come across this thread. I borrowed the BSD book from.the library and made a start yesterday. I need to.lose about 24 pounds.

I haven't got a sweet tooth at all but I can eat my bodyweight in crisps and cheese. Blush

I'm intending to weigh myself every Friday morning.

adamnfinecupofcoffee · 04/01/2019 05:28

I survived first day back at work yesterday with all the snacks/left over Xmas chocs colleagues brought in! Whoop! Normally I'd mindlessly eat them all!

So I'm a week in (just over I think?) and 7lbs off. I did indulge NYE but straight back on.

Hey to everyone!

I'm creeping over the 800 cals some days...but I am still bfing a toddler 24/7.

I'm 13st 3 and 5ft 11 ins so another 1.5 stone off I reckon?

Currently loving green tea and finding it's a good distraction from thinking obsessing about food.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/01/2019 09:16

Welcome Emma, good work Adamn. I do find that slightly smug feeling of knowing I've said no when once I would have said yes and regretted it, really motivating. It stops me feeling so powerless about carbs as I would often hear myself saying I have no control over them.

I'm down to 10.3.5 so a pound and a half off which is pretty much my holiday bloat gone. I've been this weight for months, it seems to be my body's comfortable weight now. Although for vanity I'd like to be in the 9's so I'm still chipping away.

Must do a food shop today, we literally have no food left in the house. Planned a few healthy meals, steaks tonight, scallops in cream and chilli, lentil bake and other delights!

Hi EmmaGrundy, same here, no sweet tooth but love crisps/cheese/wine. My kids aren't bothered about crisps so I generally just don't keep them in the house.

I have decided not to weigh for a few days, concentrating on no alcohol, I think I had wine most days in December and am finding it a bit hard. Going to try Seedlip non alcoholic gin over weekend as an experiment. Really want to stick to Dy Jan and maybe keep going after that fingers crossed. Taking me an hour to fall asleep but sleep quality much much better.

savagebaggagemaster · 04/01/2019 11:05

Hello everyone. Please may I join you? I read MM's book a while back. I also read the Clever Guts one as I've suffered from IBS most of my life. My dsis has had a lot of success following the bs diet and she's starting it again now. I've no idea what I weigh at the moment (and I'm too scared to find out - do I have to weigh myself?), however, my clothes are too tight and my waist is very fat. I'd just like to feel better overall and lose some fat off my body. We did two 45 min walks this week, so burned a few calories more than before (yes I am really that idle). I've started off today by having a boiled egg for breakfast. I'd usually have had toast as well, but I think bread is one of the reasons my tummy gets bloated. I'm worried I'm going to struggle as I don't eat any meat, however I've heard veggies saying they've managed okay. I also have two dc who are quite fussy eaters (ds with asd who loves beige food!) DH is on board which helps - he wants to shift some weight as well. Thanks for reading this far and good luck to everyone! Smile

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/01/2019 12:26

Welcome savage! You don't have to weigh yourself, but for your own feeling of satisfaction why not measure yourself, or try on a pair of too tight jeans as a guide? (You don't need to share on here). There have been lots of vegetarians on here so there will be recipes and tips for you. I'm planning to do a few veggie/vegan meals as I eat a very meat and cheese heavy diet so I'll be tapping in for some ideas!

OP posts:
Bluestitch · 04/01/2019 12:44

I'd be interested in some veggie ideas too, as a household we eat far too much meat. DP is of the mindset that if there's no meat it's not a proper meal so need to change that!

savagebaggagemaster · 04/01/2019 12:47

Thank you averagebear. I've been googling and have found some low carb veggie recipes that look really nice. I'm worried I'll struggle with cravings for toast, etc and I'm on my feet all day at work and can get very, very hungry! I think I will begin by simply removing big carbs from my meals and finding something to help distract me in the evenings! I usually bring work home anyway, but I always get the munchies. I do love things like Greek yogurt and berries, so I think I will plan out what I can have if I'm struggling in the evenings. Perhaps some flavoured tea / water may also help. Thanks for the warm welcome Smile

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/01/2019 12:54

You can have all the meat replacement, Quorn type things of course. Lentils, beans, chickpeas etc. This week my veggie test dish will be a lentil type cottage pie with butternut squash on the top, so I'll let you know how it turns out.

For me it's for variety more than anything, plus as I've been now doing this for several years, I think I need more veg in my diet and I figured having a once a week veggie only day would help. I am thinking from a maintenance POV rather than a weightloss POV, plus I run a lot (40km a week) and my Fitbit says I burn 2500+ cals a day so it's virtually impossible for me to sustain on 800 cals. It seems inevitable that a vegetarian diet will be higher in carbs than a omnivore diet so just be mindful, but if you cut out the Big White Carbs that will still dramatically reduce your intake.

onanothertrain · 04/01/2019 13:17

savage I'm vegetarian and have been doing BSD for 6 months. Once you get into the swing of it it's much easier although I will admit I was a bit worried at the beginning.
What kind of things do you like?

savagebaggagemaster · 04/01/2019 17:28

Bear - thank you for the ideas and advice. The butternut squash and lentil pie sounds lovely to me. Train - I love lots of things! I'm very lazy though and rely on the oven / freezer far too much. We're all out at work / school and don't get in until 545/6, so it's always been a struggle cooking from scratch as we are starving when we get in. I do want to change this and I'm sure it's possible. I also need to stop snacking instead of proper meals.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/01/2019 20:51

I've had lots of calories today, but that's ok. Low carb, no sugar, all good.

I've done 21k steps (13km was a run) and had 59g carbs.

This is my dinner: classic BSD ribeye steak, mushrooms and salad

hi I'm sloping back here very redfaced....I don't know why I stopped doing 5:2 when it was working for me but anyhoo I'm back and in the zone. Managed 2 FD's this week one Wednesday and one today. Both went really well and I'm feeling positive after reading through the thread and seeing you all sticking with it

mickeymacca · 04/01/2019 21:56

oops posted on the wrong thread!! sorry

bridgetreilly · 05/01/2019 02:01

savage, one of the things I learned from doing BSD is that carbs make you crave carbs. It's actually much easier to go cold turkey and cut them all out than it is to try cutting back. Instead of letting yourself have toast, I would try to find some other snack that isn't carb based. Personally, I love a teaspoonful of peanut butter, but you could also have a small square of cheese or a couple of almonds.

bridgetreilly · 05/01/2019 02:02

Also, hi.

I did BSD successfully this time last year, lost 2 stone in the 8 weeks, kept going for a little bit, maintained for about 6 months, then life went crazy and I put it all back on. Started again on Wednesday.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 05/01/2019 08:28

Welcome back Bridget!

Bridget is correct to say carbs make you crave carbs. I also find that too many calories (of anything) makes me crave carbs, it's as if once I hit a certain point, usually when I'm eating when I'm not properly hungry, I then open the floodgates and end up craving everything. It must be insulin related I think, although I don't know why.

As a result I ended up substantially over on both calories and carbs yesterday!

However it was the first dry Friday in a very long time which is a positive. I also got a good nights sleep, which I often don't on a Friday as a result of Wine, which means I'm starting the weekend refreshed and not hungover.

Going to Bootcamp this morning- cold wet muddy field, with incredibly handsome ex army sergeant barking orders. Then a day at home doing jobs, and batch cooking some meals.

Are zero calorie drinks allowed? Eg sugar free squash? I'm not drinking any alcohol during the initial 8 weeks but fancy something other than water maybe. So was wondering about sugar free lemon squash or zero coke with a squeeze of lemon.

Changeisneeded · 05/01/2019 12:17

I was on one of the earlier threads (around July time) but after a few weeks it all came tumbling down! I’m back up to where I was when I started and had a blood test which showed that I am pre diabetic again.

My New Years resolution was two fold give up Diet Coke and lose weight. I’m currently on day 5 with no diet drink and have been doing okay on eating healthier though having started my period yesterday It’s all gone slightly to pot!!!

I think I’m going to aim for another week of healthy eating, no Diet Coke and starting back at work before beginning the BSD a week today!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 05/01/2019 12:44

Emma in an ideal world, no- the whole artificial sweetener thing, there's various arguments to say the body doesn't recognise whether something is sugar or sweetener etc however, I used to have sweetener in coffee, I do occasionally have diet drinks (for example if the kids are having mcD's I'll have a large Sprite Zero rather than a meal!), I use diet tonic water etc (avoid fever tree light, it's sweetened with hfcs)- so within a balanced diet plan they can be okay. I sometimes have squash if I'm very thirsty, water doesn't always cut it. So I'd say have them but be mindful.

As an aside, I've bought these cold water 'infusions', they are like fruit tea bags but they go into cold water and they are really nice, fruit flavour but not sweet.

Welcome back change!

OP posts:
EmmaGrundyForPM · 05/01/2019 13:58

Thanks bear. I thought maybe the big issue with artificially sweetened drinks would be that your tastebuds are still having something "sweet". I dont have sweet tooth so that didn't worry me. I.might have a diet coke if we're out somewhere, otherwise I'll stick to water.

I drink herbal teas but hadn't thought of there being a cold equivalent. I'll look put fir the infusions.
