Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

If you have a big Tesco or Asda by you they often have polish stuff in their world food section, the kefir there is much cheaper than the 'tesco' version, it's hardly worth the faff of doing it yourself! You Can get big jars of sauerkraut there too.

OP posts:
LittleSwede · 26/02/2019 17:11

I haven't seen the Polish kefir, must have a look next time I go to a big shop. We do get the sauerkraut from Aldi sometimes and it does tend to last ages in the fridge which is great. Yet to try kimchi...

onanothertrain · 26/02/2019 17:36

I wanted something rice like to put in stuffed peppers but find cauliflower rice too cauliflowery. Found this in aldi and I have to say its lovely, I added somme chopped tomatoes, garlic, herbs and Feta cheese. It was amazing.

Hi I'm looking for advice about the BSD and whether it helps with reflux - I've posted in several places on m'net and aren't getting replies - Billy no mates -
I just been been diagnosed with Gastro oesophageal reflux -GORD and inflammation in my oesophagus and and been put on omaprazole I go back in 4 weeks and see how it’s going. The advice I got from the hospital is to eat little and often and avoid spicy and acidic foods. Oh, and to try to lose weight - which I definitely need to do!!

I want to try to manage this as far as possible by diet although I’ll take the medication for the four week period and see how I'm doing then. I’ve been looking at diets and eating plans til they’re coming out my ears! I think I prefer a Mediterranean/ low carb/anti inflammatory type approach which seems to fit with the low carb Mediterranean - the M plan on the BSD website. I won't be able to do any fasting as told not to have long gaps between meals.

Has anyone got any experience doing the BSD with GORD and can give me some advise please

thenewaveragebear1983 · 26/02/2019 18:33

Hi nelly, welcome. I have no personal experience of reflux/gastro problems. Have you heard of Michael Moseley's 'clever Guts diet'? That might be helpful, there's lots in there about anti inflammatory foods, and it's a Mediterranean style diet. As we were saying earlier, the principles of it fit really well with the BSD and fast800 so it could be a good starting point.

OP posts:
Maccalenny · 26/02/2019 19:10

Hi Nelly, sorry also no experience with GORD, but the diet is certainly good for quick weight lose if that is what may help you.

I have completed four days, and have lost 5.4lb! This far exceeds any success on any other diet, and is very motivating, as the fast800 book says.

Has anyone tried the fast800 shakes that are for sale on the website? They have chocolate or vanilla. I was thinking they might be useful to have about the place when cooking inspiration fails.

Ratatouille76 · 26/02/2019 19:18

I'm on omeprazole too and it is very effective

thenewaveragebear1983 · 26/02/2019 20:41

I'm closing the kitchen today on 1331 cals, 62g carbs (11g fibre). In light of our previous discussion about macros, I came in at 19% fat, 54% fats, 27% protein. I've done 24k steps which included a long run earlier and an hour of circuits this evening, hence the additional calories, as Fitbit claims I've burned over 3000 today!

Tomorrow: I will be having the tuna mayo salad from today's menu for lunch, and dinner is a Jamie Oliver recipe, basically a posh casserole that should be made with veal but I'm doing it with beef instead, and serving with celeriac and green veg.

OP posts:
nellyitsme · 26/02/2019 20:56

Hi thanks for replying
@Ratatouille76 how do you find Omeprazole- I've only been on them 3 days and no noticeable side effects yet 😀
@thenewaveragebear1983 I've read the clever guts book and I thought if I do a combination of the two: the BSD low carb Mediterranean diet option and add in pre and probiotics and fermented foods
Well done @Maccalenny!

Ratatouille76 · 26/02/2019 21:06

I found them really good. No side effects. Now only take them occasionally.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/02/2019 08:20

Weighed in this morning, I've lost 5lb of bloat since Monday which is incredible! It's actually quite incredible that I can carry 5lb of water around purely from eating a few extra carbs, I must be part camel I reckon.

OP posts:
LittleSwede · 27/02/2019 08:23

Good morning everyone. I'm ready and rearing to get started today. The plan for food is:

Breakfast - purition (a totally natural meal replacement without nasties I found last year) shake 200 cal
Lunch - turkey burger with feta and spinach 250 cal
Dinner - chilli made with lean pork mice plus a spoon of crème fraiche 300 cal

When do did 5:2 last year I tended to skip breakfast but I'm not quite ready to go this yet so will have a shake in the late morning.

Nelly - DH found that eating food made from scratch, intermittent fasting and adding fermented foods to his diet helped with his reflux. He's on lanzaprezol (spelling?) which is similar to omeprezol which helps too.

LittleSwede · 27/02/2019 08:24

Bear, wow that is a great loss!

Seawig · 27/02/2019 08:30

Morning all. Day 3 here and away for work so no scales to see if it's helping. Feeling find headache and energy wise, bit tired but no more than normal.

Hoping lunch options will be high protein and low carb but prepared to ditch the bread and eat fillings if need be.

Feeling ok but a bit lost in the evenings without snacking. Watched something and read and drank water and was ok. Need to get used to it.

Still doing 16:8 so eating my two meals a day of 800 calories between 12 and 8. Had to skip the free breakfast this morning as I'm avoiding temptation and want to eat a bigger lunch and dinner more. I don't feel very hungry in the mornings so need to make the most of that!

Hi all, week 1 day 3 here. Are any of you vegetarian or vegan? I'm vegetarian and obviously can't use most of the recipes. I briefly tried BSD a few years back when I was more of a flexitarian and ate some fish but even then found it hard to come up with meal ideas. Of course I've struggled with my weight exactly because I've got into the habit of eating too many simple carbs at every meal from cereal at breakfast to pizza for dinner and biscuits in between...

I'm probably going to be relying heavily on beans, pulses, Greek yoghurt and different types of cheese...

I have 4kg to lose to get to 'normal weight' BMI and about 10-15kg in total to get to my happy weight.

onanothertrain · 27/02/2019 10:16

Hi vic I'm vegetarian and have been doing BSD for 8 months so have passed the 800 calorie part. I haven't got round to buying any of the books so don't have those recipes to follow. I'm pretty good at adapting or making up recipes though.
I eat Greek Yoghurt with Berries for breakfast during the week and vegi Sausages, egg and mushroom at weekend. Lunch tends to be salad or soup and dinner varies - this week I'm having courgette and Feta fritters with poached egg, peppers stuffed with Mediterranean cauliflower rice and halloumi, curry, cauliflower cheese and beetroot burgers. As you can see I love cheese 😁
What kind of things do you like?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/02/2019 11:14

If you look on Pinterest for recipes, use searches like blood sugar diet vegetarian, paleo vegetarian, keto vegetarian, you'll probably find some good ideas too. The paleo/keto will be slightly different to ours, Keto particularly can be v high calorie I find, but it's a good start. And of course you can use tofu, quorn, etc in replacement of meat in any recipes?

Hi everyone. Hope I can join in?
I've been doing a low carb diet since 2nd Jan and been very successful. And think it sounds very similar to this anyway.
I've been below 50g carbs and 1200 calories every day (with prob 1 or 2 days a week below 800 calories) and I've lost 20llbs so far with around the same to go.
However the last few weeks have been very disheartening as I've barely lost a llb in that time. I have started doing some exercise classes so I'm thinking it's maybe that that's stopping the scales going down?
I'm going to try and do some intermittent fasting and see if that will kick start the metabolism again? I struggle with fasting as I am a breakfast person but managed to not eat till 10am today (light meal at 5pm last night before powerhoop)
Has anyone read about metabolic confusion or similar?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/02/2019 12:40

Laughs welcome. I've not heard the term metabolic confusion, is it a bit like the old 'starvation mode' theory- now debunked to a degree- like you need to mix up your food schedule to confuse your metabolism or it goes into starvation mode?
You might find you've lost inches due to your exercise regime, did you do measurements before you started. Well done on your loss so far though, that's great.

OP posts:
Laughsandgiggles · 27/02/2019 17:57

Hi @thenewaveragebear1983 yes it does sound like something similar to that. Wasn't sure if it was a new way of thinking but obviously not if it's already been defunked.
Just test very frustrating when I have followed the diet 100% and now stopped losing wet.
Interestingly I don't seem to have lost any inches either but then my clothes are fitting better so something must be changing.

Laughsandgiggles · 27/02/2019 17:58

Oops typos that should read -
Just gets very frustrating when I have followed 100% and have stopped losing weight.

LittleSwede · 27/02/2019 18:05

First day over and done with. It was hard a as had a bad night sleep and a grumpy DD at home but I did it! Went over by maybe 40 calories as had another coffee with milk in the morning but otherwise stuck to plan.

Hope everyone else had a good day. The sunshine helped!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/02/2019 18:42

Laughs it's the starvation mode thing that's been debunked- as in, it doesn't necessarily slow your metabolism down if you reduce your calories. You don't store fat differently if you've eaten 500 calories a day compared to 5000 a day. Interestingly, Michael Moseley himself challenged the starvation mode ideas and found evidence that reducing calories to around 800 a day, and intermittent fasting actually increased metabolic rate. The key is what you eat. This plan aims to reduce the peaks and troughs in insulin release, and to calm that whole cycle down, because essentially it is insulin that stores fat in your body. I will add, this diet can be notorious for its plateaus and often once the initial whoosh of weightloss has subsided, you can have a few weeks plateau, which could be what you're experiencing now, which is why we suggest to new starters to do measurements. If you're sure your food is right, stick with it- a good week always shows eventually Grinyou can try increasing your water intake as you do need water to complete the physiological processes involved in fat burning. That can sometimes kick start a flagging weight loss?

OP posts:
thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/02/2019 18:44

Should add, based on my very cursory google searches- metabolic confusion then is the process of say having one high cal day, one fasting day, having breakfast one day, skipping dinner the next, (for example) to sort of trick the metabolism into staying high to avoid starvation mode.
