Blood sugar diet thread 13

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Well I haven't posted for a while as the weight wasn't coming off as it seemed to be for everyone else. I've stuck to it though, between 800-1000 calories every day since the second week of January and I finally got up the courage to weigh myself and I have lost ten pounds Shock. My clothes are looser, my face looks thinner and my daughter took a photo of me yesterday where I realised that I don't look haggard and puffy, for the first time in years. Another ten to go but I will not stop now till it's gone. The hardest time of the day is about 9/10 pm when I am SO hungry but I WILL keep going. I can't go back to how unhappy and self conscious I was.

I'm sorry I've not had time to catch up on this thread but today I've eaten sugar. Quite a bit of it as I've been to an afternoon tea and I've got that horrible permanent hungry shaky feeling back. Possibly proves there is something up with my blood sugar! Back on it tomorrow.

Jacksback · 24/02/2019 11:47

Hi all
I posted on another thread but realised this is the main one for advice and motivation

Never done this ( or heard of it before ) but bought the book on my kindle ( the joys of technology ) last night and am speed reading

Currently 13 stone 3 at 5 ft 4.5 so far and fed up
Have previously done sw , ww etc but did not achieve much

BIG wedding coming up later in the year ( not mine lol ) so want to be in something lovely rather than something that ‘ will do ‘

Any advice gratefully received
Thanks lovelies

Jacksback · 24/02/2019 11:47

So far , should read ‘ so fat ‘

Welcome Jack and good luck! It definitely takes a bit of adjustment to work out what and how you’re best eating to stick within the guidelines so be kind to yourself as you get going.

hottub and carol great news from you too! Well done.

I’ve got back down to 10st 12lbs today which is where I was this time last week, which is good. I know weight can fluctuate so much for so many reasons though, so I’m trying to not be too obsessive about it.
It’s getting easier to make choices as I go, though still planning a day in advance. Want to start trying to up my exercise now and hopefully push off the next 12lbs. This might be the longest I’ve stuck with a plan and feeling good about carrying on, but hope the weight loss picks up again!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/02/2019 17:31

Welcome jack, well done carol

Completed my race today, smashed my personal best for 10km and completed the 15 in 83 minutes. 32nd out of 116 runners. I'm bloody chuffed with that for my first ever race!

I realise just how stressed I have actually been about it, and as a result how chaotic my eating has been recently. I really truly intend now to get back to a lovely clean, low carb lifestyle. I have been scraping the bottom of the barrel with my food, eating good meals and then succumbing to the worst quality snacks, and quite frankly, irrespective of weight loss, it cannot be good for my health. I have gone up and down on the scales and the highest UP has been a big number I do not want to see again, which hopefully will be a kick up the bum for me. To put it bluntly, there is no point in pushing my body to these extremes in terms of fitness and then poisoning it with all this horrible processed muck and sugar.

So: the week ahead. I am going to sit tonight and write and calorie count my menu and shopping list, and then endeavour to stick to it 100% for the week. I find that the easiest way to stay on track as it removes any question of what to eat and all the thinking is already done. I'm going to aim for 1200 cals but keep the carbs low (under 50 ideally) and try and shift some of my bloat!

I'm going to peruse Jamie Oliver for some inspiration, but I desperately need lunch ideas or I just have salad which gets a bit tired after 4 days....!!

First day tomorrow feeling a bit nervous as 800 cal is quite a drop from my normal levels of scoffing

Plan is 300 cal lunch
Small chicken Breast , tomato’s cucumber and salad leaves , drizzle oil /balsamic

Evening meal under 500 cal ?( From the book )
Steak with mushroom sauce
Can I add some veg to this or is that not allowed ?

Oh and if I made a dip (feta and olive ) what would I have it with for a lunch , have both i fridge already so a possible for tue

Thanks in advance for any replies , advice

thisyeargoodyear · 24/02/2019 20:59

Jack I made the prawn korma with the coconut cauliflower rice from the fast 800 book this weekend and it was delicious, I highly recommend. I am going to make a veggie variation of it again next week.

I can also recommend the thai red lentil soup from the fast 800 book. It was very tasty and filling.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/02/2019 21:01

Jack just replied on the other thread too, but you can have green veg etc. I buy frozen usually as it's less wasteful so just weigh out my portion. Green beans, broccoli etc. Be more mindful with carrots, peas etc as they are higher in carbs, but peas mashed with garlic butter or goats cheese are absolutely delicious!

Your feta and olive dip sounds lovely too, I'd just have it with crudités of peppers, cucumber etc. Or you could make little 'roll ups' of lettuce leaves, cheese, ham, dip like little wraps?

Thanks thisyeargoodyear and
thenewaveragebear1983 for your tips

I am amazed at all the losses and that you all say once you get into it , it works quickly

Fingers crossed 🤞

Seawig · 24/02/2019 22:46

Right. I'm going to start the 800 fast tomorrow.

Work and home are hectic for various reasons but if I wait for a quiet period it'll never happen.

Away for work a couple of days this week too but I can manage to eat between 10 and 8 as a start, aim for 800 calories per day in two meals, and get some more ingredients for the recipes in the book as I go along.

I've weighed myself and measured my waist as a motivator. Horrified by my waist measurement. Something has to change!!

VenusInfers · 24/02/2019 23:23

Congrats to Carol and HotTub on the great progress! You should both feel SO proud.

I've been off diet for the last week or so visiting family. The sudden return to enforced carb-heavy breakfasts mixed with a little too much lovely booze has put a couple of pounds back on. Normally that would lead to a small spiral of guilt and eating toast. But not on Fast 800. It was with a sense of almost GLEE that I portioned out my egg & toms for breakfast and made my veg soup for lunch.

Just knowing that I can eat tasty, satisfying food for a few days or so and get back to where I want to be is really empowering. Plus I love an excuse to buy a big chunk of smoked salmon!

Really hope you find the diet works for your lifestyles Seawig and Jacks. If you can get through the first few days and keep on weighing your portions (even when it gets dull) you should see great results.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 25/02/2019 08:14

Stepped on the scales this morning and oh my days- I have gained rather a lot a few pounds in February. Now hoping that some is water due to increasing carbs and also possibly some is muscle gain due to my increased training and increased calories- but some is definitely just gluttony and poor choices and I feel it too.

So I'm on it this week for a strict Fast800 week, at least on non training days, (with 1200 on running days) but focussing on cleaning up my diet to eliminate all these things that have crept in recently.

We have a fabulous weekend away planned in April with dh's work, to Italy, so that's going to be my target- to be Poolside-ready by then! I'll never be bikini ready, I've had 3 babies!!

Managed to grab some basics on the way back from the school run so set for today.

I'm wondering about the protein though - the book said essential to have 50g of protein a day? Is that right for the 800 fast days too?

I've grabbed smoked salmon, tuna, turkey but it looks like I'll need to eat a lot of them to get that much over two meals?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 25/02/2019 13:19

Seawig I'm not sure of the exact wording of the fast 800, but ideally for BSD you would be getting the majority of your calories from protein and/or fat, so yes, aiming for 50g protein is a good start, maybe even more.

OP posts:
thenewaveragebear1983 · 25/02/2019 13:22

Just googled and the source I read said 0.36g per pound of body weight. So I'm 10 st 3 so 143 x 0.36 = 51g protein. Bear in mind that's protein content, not protein sources so it's not saying eat 51g of chicken for example, you'd have to eat over 200g chicken to get 51g protein (just by way of example)

OP posts:
Jacksback · 25/02/2019 13:31

Lunch over
Did enjoy my chicken salad but itching for my normal crisps but resisting
Tea is planned and hope to have that about 630
Dp has been advised of changes ahead lol but he will get some potatoes on his plate

Seawig · 25/02/2019 13:55

Thank you Newaveragebear, that's really helpful.

I went with omelette, smoked salmon and lots of baby spinach with a drizzle of olive oil and balsamic.

Halved a small pack of nuts so about 300 for lunch - I weighed it all out. Thought the nuts would help with the protein too.

Trying very hard to resist 70% chocolate ... planning on saving some dinner calories for a few dark chocolate drops this evening so looking forward to that.

Ratatouille76 · 25/02/2019 14:12

Well done everyone. I've just has my blood test results and as I thought am pre-diabetic. Score of 42. Not good. They want to test me again in 3 months time.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 25/02/2019 15:35

Ratatouille is that the hba1c test? I have to have an annual one, you've reminded me I need to book it! It will be interesting to see the difference after 3 months!
