Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

First it won't affect your weightloss too much to do 1000 calories, as long as you keep the carbs low. And please don't feel guilty about not going to the gym! I was a bit like that as I ran every day (well, 6x a week) and felt that if I missed a day it was the 'beginning of the end' and I'd just miss day after day- however, since switching to alternate days, I run further, much faster (eg taking 3 minutes off my best time in just 3 weeks) and I know I'm recovering and resting my body properly. Be kind to yourself!

I've had another good day today- I ran this morning, had a small portion of porridge for breakfast, and had salad and a homemade sausage roll (Blush) for lunch, then for dinner I've had chicken wrapped in Parma ham and asparagus. With baked figs and Greek yoghurt for dessert! Very yummy. I will loosely tot up the calories later but only as a rough estimate. 15 steps (7k run)

Tomorrow- quick run in the morning, then 2 play dates which will involve coffee shop for 1 and lunch for the other, so will need to be on guard and focussed. Not having my Coffee with cake doesn't bother me, but healthy food always seems so expensive in pubs (I really resent paying £10 for a salad when a hearty meal is £7/8) so it makes the decision harder.

I'm teetering on the edge of losing a stone! That will feel good. Not eaten yet but a Quorn steak beckons. Not actually hungry either, but I will be soon.

onanothertrain · 19/02/2019 21:00

Well done wow

wowfudge · 19/02/2019 21:12

Thank you!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/02/2019 07:51

Weigh in day today, and I'm back down to 10.3 after going waaaay up over the last week. Bodies are weird aren't they?? My mindset around food this week has been much calmer, and as a result my eating behaviour has been much healthier, I feel much more in control. I do wonder if I will ever lose those final 3lbs though!

However, it's not the time for extreme carb reduction or calorie cutting this week! Today I'm going to skip breakfast, lunch is out at a local pub, and dinner will be something light maybe white fish in a curry type sauce with veg. I decided against running as I have a twinge in my knee, but will be walking a lot as I'm out with the children.

I'm getting a bit frustrated tbh but I think hormones are playing a part in my weight loss slowing. Just making sure I keep on track. I think I need a lunch shake up today: any ideas? I usually have avocado on rye bread or the carb free Ploughman's, that kind of thing. I can easily get to a supermarket at lunchtime. I don't mind soup if there's a ready made one that's on plan, for example.

wowfudge · 21/02/2019 08:22

Still not lost more weight but I have measured myself this morning and I've lost 2 inches off my waist and my hips, so that's something. A colleague said I looked slimmer yesterday too - she knows I'm dieting.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/02/2019 08:51

That's great wow, well done! It's hard when your hormones are fighting you isn't it? As you know, I really struggle with it, and I totally empathise!

I am getting peed off though! I'm only three and half weeks in so need to bear with it Grin

BuffaloCauliflower · 21/02/2019 13:05

Ended up eating more, though on plan, over the weekend as had my period and just felt like I needed more, and lost another 2lbs then wobbled at the start of the week due to needing to eat out due work things and had sandwiches and pasta. Went back up a couple of lbs which is annoying, though I’ve just got back on the horse.

Tbh the challenge for me isn’t the low calories, it’s keeping carbs under 50g when I’m pescatarian and love veg! Anyone got any good tips? I want to be eating things like veggie soups but they still end up being quite high carb so I tend to be closer to 60g. Quorn sausages for example are great for protein but also higher in carbs than most meat ones. I don’t want to end up eating the exact same things every day but I’m really committed so probably will. Ive eaten so much eggs and salmon over the last few weeks!

BuffaloCauliflower · 21/02/2019 15:38

I’m looking at 65g of carbs today in 800 calories. That’s with fried cauliflower rice for dinner. I’m eating totally on plan, maybe I shouldn’t worry so much about exact carbs as Dr Mosley suggests in Fast 800? I really want my results to go back up though.

howhowhow · 21/02/2019 23:38

I'm in my last week of the 8 weeks and I have lost 24lbs which is just over the 10%. Now having to work out what plan I'm going to follow next. I'm thinking 5:2.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 22/02/2019 07:51

Planned a day off yesterday as we had an afternoon out bowling and a meal (selected by the dc at Frankie and Bennie, which was horrible) but hey.

Today- dc going out all day with Dh! Hurrah! I'm meeting my friend, for lunch out- again. Although it's at harvester this time, so plenty of salad and probably chicken, and no dessert today.

Dread to think of the scales after this week, although I feel more confident that I will be able to be strict next week, plus I haven't been snacking on rubbish like I was last week even though some meals have been terrible. I'm not usually such a social butterfly, all these lunches out!!

Just been reading about this and wondering if it's for me.

I'm 44 and stuck at 1.5-2 stone over the weight I was after having my two kids by 35. It's just crept on bit by bit and won't shift.

I have some permanent core injuries so can't do any impact exercise. Work full time. Kids. Do an office job.

I've never dieted, I've always tried to eat a healthy mix and have the odd treat. But the pounds are creeping on and I'm all squidgy round the middle. Not healthy and not great for the weak core and dodgy bladder either to have the extra weight on it.

If I get the Fast800 book and the recipe book would that start me off? I've always avoided diets as the evidence has been they don't work. Is this different?

onanothertrain · 22/02/2019 11:34

seawig I'm the same age as you and also found that after 40 it was difficult to maintain my weight and noticed it more round my middle. This diet had been amazing for losing fat from this area and I noticed it very quickly as well. Initially I did no exercise for the first 2 weeks and still lost inches. I think in the first 10 weeks I lost more than 20 inches mostly from bust, waist and hips.

Seawig · 22/02/2019 13:48

That is really encouraging. I feel sluggish and it sounds like a kick start might help a lot.

I've ordered the books and a quick 15 minute recipe book so now just need to do it properly and see how it works.

It's the challenge of shopping for what I need to eat and perhaps having separate things to DH and DC - another layer of work.

But if I see energy increases and lower belly weight so quickly that would be very motivating to stick to it as a change of life habit not a fad.

I have dropped all drinks except water in the past few months to help my bladder. Surprisingly that's ok now. I find it harder to have the odd fizzy drink and then back to water than I do just having water all the time.

Hopefully a Med diet would also become the norm.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 22/02/2019 16:48

Seawig yes I agree with onanother, this diet is great for changing stubborn body shapes and you don't need to exercise alongside it. When I'm properly 'on it' I feel very energised- annoyingly I'm not so angelic at the moment but was moaning to my friend only today about how sluggish and unhealthy I feel right now (despite being the fittest I've ever been in my life, ironically) because of all the unhealthy food I've been eating. I'm desperate for that lovely clean energised feeling again!

Welcome aboard!

Justanothergirl19 · 22/02/2019 20:27

Hi everyone, long time no speak! Just wanted to give a quick update, as I enter my last week of BSD (that's if I don't carry on). I have stuck to it pretty much to the letter and have lost 24lb so far. In the last few weeks, I lost 2.5 lb every week, which is interesting because I reckon I would have lost the same amount on a 1000-1100 kcal diet (from previous experience). Anyway, I am really pleased, I found that after a few weeks I just went into autopilot and had a rotation of the same things throughout the week. I must say my hunger has decreased dramatically. Very strange for me as I am a constant snacker. I think that I will start Keto with Intermittent Fasting after this, as I am practically there in terms of the habits. Will still keep a close eye on calories.
Anyway, it sounds like everyone is doing great. X

BuffaloCauliflower · 23/02/2019 08:04

Justanothergirl19 thanks for the check inc great to hear about your good results!

I’ve now been stuck at 11st all week, going nowhere. I wish I’d done measurements before because I think inches might be changing if scales hadn’t. Haven’t had a perfect week as wobbled at the beginning but though it would have recitified by now ☹️ Losing nearly 10lbs in two weeks was very motivating though, I’m sure I can get back there just need a strict week. I am struggling more than I thought I would just eating the same things over and over as I love food and want variety. Need to think about what I can do to mix things up and stay in 800 cals

wowfudge · 23/02/2019 08:10

Buffalo - my week has been the same although I did try to mix up lunches instead of eating the same things. I'm going to have eggs for breakfast over the weekend to shake things up a bit.

thisyeargoodyear · 23/02/2019 09:36

Hi everyone, so day 42 of the fast 800 diet today and my totals to date are: 8.2 kg weight loss, 13.5 cm waist loss and 11 cm hip loss. The last few weeks have been quite slow and this week has been especially challenging as I have been totally on plan but have gained weight! However, I am now seeing a pattern related to my cycle in that the week that I ovulate I am the most bloated and gain weight (even more so than my period week) which is frustrating but at least now I am aware that is week will always be a challenge. I am planning to continue this diet until the 12 week mark and will then do 5:2. I went to the Dr Mosley talk in the theatre last week which was a good motivation at the half way mark!

Well done to everyone so far Smile

wowfudge · 23/02/2019 09:50

I hope the same is true for me too! Last time I did the BSD I didn't weigh myself until I'd done 6 weeks and I'd lost one and half stones. I've been much stricter on the calories this time so I'm a bit down not to have lost this week. Had dark rye bread with scrambled egg and spinach for breakfast which was a nice change.
