Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Thanks wow I’ve been wary of rye bread as don’t want to muck up and it’s still quite high carb, but I’ve added a dark sourdough rye to my Abel and Cole to give it a try. I think I’d benefit from the extra fibre at least, and could have it with a low calorie veg soup for lunch as well. I didn’t have breakfast for ages but found I was hungry for something a bit more starting this diet, so good to have options. Haven’t had breakfast today though, haven’t been hungry so just left it.

wowfudge · 12/02/2019 12:27

Rye bread is in the Fast 800 book - one slice of the dense German type has around 19g carbs, it's high in fibre at more than 3.5g a slice and contains no wheat for anyone looking to avoid it.

BuffaloCauliflower · 12/02/2019 13:05

Yeh I know it is, I’m just wary! But I’m sure it’ll be fine and fibre is as important to me

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/02/2019 13:19

I had a reasonable pumpernickel type bread from Tesco, it's 100 cals a slice, but personally it's not 'bready' enough for me and has a very strong taste. It was nice as an occasional thing though, and it freezes well so I just took one slice out at a time and toasted it.

Breakfast mini quiches or muffins are a good idea for work, you can make a batch and they last a few days. Or joe wicks Fish cakes, although maybe not socially acceptable for an office environment?!

I don't tend to eat breakfast, but then I do need my lunch quite early. I've been experimenting with having something small on the days I run because I read an article about fasting ,exercise and cortisol which basically said not to do it as it causes massive cortisol release, which in turn causes belly fat and insulin resistance (which could explain my ravenous appetite recently as I've been doing a lot of longer runs?) but today I have just had 30g of cheese at 8 am and even four hours later had a miserable stitch for at least half my run.

Does this rye bread look alright if I had reasonably thin slices? It looks very traditional/unmeddled with and I like that it’s sourdough too, but it’s not that really thick and dense dark rye that comes in ready thick slices

MikeHannigansStripyShirt · 12/02/2019 14:55

Bear I never eat before I run - I’ve read about fasted running not being great for women too, but I my experience, my body hasn’t read the science! I feel sick every time I try it.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/02/2019 15:25

Buffalo if it's any help, the one I had had the look and texture of cork tiles, but was very dark brown in colour! Yours looks much more palatable!

BuffaloCauliflower · 12/02/2019 16:57

I thought you might say that! I’ve had the other one before and I don’t hate it... don’t want to muck it all up with the wrong bread 😂

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/02/2019 17:40

I bought a polish pumpkin seed loaf today, it's 100 cals and 18g carbs a slice, but it's half and half rye and normal flour (I realised after I got home) so not sure how that will be on plan. I had one slice with cheese and loads of salad at lunch and it was really lovely.

I have actually had a really good day today, after a positive start yesterday. Despite the cheese this morning giving me a stitch, I haven't been rattling around gnawing my own arms off like I have been of late, despite running 15km. I actually went to Tesco after running and didn't buy a single treat 'for the kids' me, or even allowed things that I know I binge on (such as peanut butter or nuts) which is miraculous really. I wonder if that's the result of eating before running, and if so whether I can eat but counteract the stitch somehow? I was getting to the stage of not wanting to run because my appetite was so unmanageable and i was eating far more than I was burning, so today has been a very welcome change.

I'm not eating dinner til late tonight as I'm going to circuits, so I've moved the weekly menu around to accommodate.

I'm having chicken tikka with cauliflower rice and kale for tea. Just as soon as the cat moves from my lap.

BuffaloCauliflower · 12/02/2019 22:08

Had salmon fillet with broccoli and asparagus for dinner. No breakfast, lunch was a salad with avocado, feta and olives, and I had apply slices dipped in peanut butter for an afternoon snack. Finishing the day on 758kcal, 40g protein, 48g of fat and 47g of carbs, so a lower protein day for me, but stayed in calories and on plan.

BuffaloCauliflower · 12/02/2019 22:09

Oh and 20g fibre - very important!

wowfudge · 12/02/2019 22:53

Tea was filling. I've made a cheesecake for DP for Valentine's Day. Not much of a risk I'll want any as I don't like it.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/02/2019 08:27

I closed the kitchen yesterday on 1209 cals, 76g carbs (somehow, need to check the list as that seems high although I did have that 1 slice of pumpkin seed bread), and a ridiculous 29,800 steps (incl a 14.5k run). 2lb off this morning.

OP posts:
wowfudge · 13/02/2019 09:39

Well done bear - I'm still stalled at 12lbs off and was below 900 calories yesterday. I think this must be down to totm. At least I hope so. I am finding cravings for sweet stuff less than before embarking on the diet though. Lunch today will be houmous, feta, a few olives and celery and cucumber - I think they call it the Mediterranean platter in the BSD book.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/02/2019 18:59

Closing the kitchen today slightly over on calories at 1449 and 75g carbs, although I've not had anything off plan. 17k steps, no run today. It's just worked out as a higher carb day due to my dinner which was a Jamie Oliver chilli type stew and it was a-maz-ing. Lots of fennel seeds and paprika, and I used a tin of mixed taco beans (which is where the extra carbs came from), it was delicious and very filling. I have a portion saved for lunch tomorrow too.

Tomorrow I'll have that for lunch with salad, and then for dinner we are having lamb steaks, roasted fig and feta salad, and greens. Mid-distance run planned too. I might make some sort of chocolate mousse for dessert as it's Valentine's Day.

wowfudge · 13/02/2019 19:04

Ooh - any chance you could post your roasted fig and feta salad recipe bear? I've decorated the cheesecake with a cack-handed heart.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/02/2019 19:52

Wow i will just bake the figs in a splash of olive oil on a low heat until they are a bit sticky, and then probably a green salad with feta and maybe some balsamic vinegar. In a previous life, a drizzle of honey would have gone down a treat on there too, but.....!!

wowfudge · 14/02/2019 07:27

Sounds lovely bear. Finally down another lb this morning - hoorah!

BuffaloCauliflower · 15/02/2019 15:55

I’ve been doing well all week, though last couple of days feeling crappy and today I’ve left work early because I feel sick. I thought exhaustion was PMT, and it still might be, but the sickiness is something else. My go-to when I’m ill or feeling down is rice, or really just carbs in general. I’d geared myself up to stay the same or maybe even go up a bit during AF but finding it hard now I’m ill Sad

BuffaloCauliflower · 15/02/2019 15:58

I really want cheesy mash 😫 would cheesy and buttery mashed cauliflower fill this hole? Or maybe Jeruselem Artichokes? Would still be over calories but stay on plan

Thanks hottub I drink about 5-6 litres of water a day without even trying so dehydration is not an issue! I’ve got this horrible dry mouth and throat which makes me know something’s wrong, considering how much I drink. Beans are yum but not what I want when I’m sick. I actually don’t want anything to eat at the moment, despite being hungry, which might not be helping.

BuffaloCauliflower · 15/02/2019 16:47

Is there such a thing as a low carb Indian takeaway?!

wowfudge · 15/02/2019 16:47

I wouldn't have Jerusalem artichokes - they don't agree with me. Frozen cauliflower rice is really useful. The Ocado one is 33 calories a sachet.
