Blood sugar diet thread 13

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

I have pcos too. It's only recently that I have gained quite so much weight and whilst my weight was lower I had no problems conceiving. I've got a hairy chin though and low carb is the only diet that gets it off of me. I'm def insulin resistant.

Pleased to report overall a 1lb loss. It was looking shaky in the middle of the week that I was going to be up 2lbs but it came off just in time. Slightly disappointed as I've been really good this week but am committed to keep at it. Week 5 here I come.

wowfudge · 03/02/2019 13:40

I've lost 4lbs. I didn't intend to weigh myself at all, but I'm really pleased.

Thank you. I am determined and have found that planning what I'll eat is key, as is leaving eating breakfast until late morning.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 05/02/2019 07:23

Morning, hope everyone had a good weekend?

Yesterday I found myself a lot less snacky- kept out of the kitchen/fridge and although I didn't count calories I had a good day on plan and had no sugar (which compared to my recent weeks is a complete u-turn!)

Today: going for a long run this morning, and circuits tonight. I'm out for lunch but I've already checked the menu and they do a nice sounding salad so I'll have that, and then a freezer meal tonight (Young's gastro fish and mushy peas!), so hopefully will have another good day today.

Happy Tuesday y'all!

My weight loss is now half a stone. To say I am delighted is an understatement. I want to go back to the gym, etc but my self-confidence has been through the floor and I'm taking steps towards it. Losing more weight is part of that. I had some good news professionally today so I feel as though things are coming together.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 05/02/2019 21:58

That's great wow, well done!

A good day for me, I didn't calorie count again today but have had a good BSD day, no sugar. Ran 13k this morning and a circuits class this evening so feeling on it this week so far!

Hope everyone's ok, very quiet in here this week!

I’m 3lbs down in 3 days from a starting weight of 11st 8lbs (BMI 29.6) and feeling determined. Sticking to close to 800 cals, maybe 50 more. Not finding it too hard, but lots of planning and meal prep in advance is helping. I knew Id be out late at a work thing last night, so took dinner with me to eat before so I wasn’t starving and tempted by the canapes. I’m also trying to get a good range of nutrients and fibre as well across the week, father than just looking at calories, protein and fat. Fibre is so important, glad to see the Fast 800 book (which I read in less than a day, factoring in work time!) also prioritises thinking about this.

I’m getting married in September and can’t bear to try on wedding dresses at this weight, so the knowledge I need to do that soon and therefore lose weight quickly is very motivating! Having a really defined plan is helping me, my general diet isn’t wildly unhealthy, but that makes it easier to make excuses.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/02/2019 22:16

Gah, I've had a bloody awful day today.

Sorry to hear that Bear Sad what happened?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/02/2019 07:11

Buffalo it was just one of those days. Had a small row with Dh (which is very rare, we don't argue really) just on my way out to the supermarket. So I ended buying a few things that I said were for the kids, but they weren't, they were clearly for me! If I'd made it til I got home I'd probably have been ok, but I ate the chocolate in the car so that was it then, I just had a horrible sugary binge, with toast, fruit, crusty bread, cereal, (I know I know. Whoever thought toast and fruit would constitute a binge!!) but basically the plan went out of the window entirely and I ate like a normal person student all day.

Exacerbated by having rubbish sleep this week as well, and it being a week until my period, I think I just hit the danger zone unprepared and, well, carbs. Carbs happened.

I got out alive though, although a whopping 3lbs up for my efforts. Which is mostly water. Maybe I needed a bit of a blow out, I don't know? I've been really struggling recently, and I'm training hard too with long runs.

So, line drawn ~~~~~~~~~~~aaaand breathe.

Today: coffee and milk
Fast as long as possible (living on my carb toast reserves
Eggy something for lunch
Chicken in Parma ham for dinner
Easy peasy!

Hey bear, well done for drawing a line and not being too hard on yourself - and also for not binging on empty calories. Hopefully the extra vitamins in toast/fruit/cereal will have done you some good? Smile

I’m a little underwhelmed with my own progress: week 2 and only 1.4lb off. Could be TOTM approaching (v irregular these days so can never really tell!) but I have also been a bit slack with measuring Blush, so maybe my guesstimates have been far out?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/02/2019 13:53

Thanks doit, and yes I suppose you're right about the empty calories thing, I'd never thought about it that way before.

If you are guesstimating and not weighing then it might be a good idea to weigh everything quite strictly for a few days. You'll know pretty quickly whether you've been accurately guessing or not! I was amazed, even just something as simple as buying a different brand of cheese in a different shaped block meant that my usual thickness of slice was nearly double the calories! Our food is very calorie dense so they can really add up.

Cor, it's very quiet in here this week? Is that a good sign or a very bad sign?

My week is averaging out ok, but I won't lie, I'm struggling a little bit. Brewing a cold as well, which doesn't help, sleep still terrible, and I am having daily 'I shouldn't but I want it' battles with all the wrong foods. Tonight I'm refusing to cook so have a Sainsbury's taste the difference chicken bacon and Brie meal which looks delish, sugar snap peas, and salad.

wowfudge · 08/02/2019 20:55

I'll post again if it's quiet - I don't want to monopolise things! This is day 12 for me and I've already lost 4.8kg/10.5lbs which I am amazed and thrilled about. I have been carefully calorie counting and meal planning. For me, lunch is the important meal and needs to be filling and interesting. Today I've had homemade red lentil houmous with cucumber and a slice of very filling rye bread which I cut into fingers for dipping. Tea was a supermarket curry, a fairly dry one, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I've had around 1100 calories today but have stuck to 800 on other days.

I want to lose a total of two stone and be in the healthy BMI range. I'm overweight as things stand.

BuffaloCauliflower · 08/02/2019 22:40

Hey. 4lbs off for me this week which is a great start, losing about a lb a day. Went slightly over 800 yesterday and today but not too much, partly teething problems trying to figure out what’s best to eat so I’m satisfied and not hungry, but on plan. Have stayed on plan even when over.

Also have 2st to lose to get to a BMI of 24. Had the scary realisation what I’ve not been in a healthy BMI since I was 17, my entire adult life. I’m now 31. I’ve got up and down but consistently on the upward trajectory. Now is the time to really tackle this.

BuffaloCauliflower · 09/02/2019 08:47

6lbs off this morning, despite two day’s off 900-1000 days. Feeling pretty good with it too. Off to the gym today to help it along and do my muscles some good 😊

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/02/2019 08:55

Wow, please do post, don't worry about over posting. It keeps the thread ticking along and in people's threads I'm on lists. Plus otherwise it's just me rattling along about how I'm not really doing well and that's not a great advert for the diet!

Buffalo great loss, well done!

I'm up a pound this week which I deserve entirely and I need a big kick up the bum. Off out to bootcamp now and then I've planned my menu out for the day, but I really just need to stop mindlessly eating and grazing off plan. That's my only real plan for the day ahead.

Just joining in. Have posted elsewhere but needed a bit of advice or to see if this has happened to anyone else. Have done 5 days of Fast 800 and been meticulous, drinking water and checking portions and not lost a single pound, have three stone to lose in total. I cant exercise as really bad knee. Feel very disheartened as I was so proud of myself for sticking to it for 5 days Sad

BuffaloCauliflower · 09/02/2019 09:38

Sorry to hear that @Intohellbutstayingstrong
What have you been eating and what have you been using to track? Is it TOTM or any other thing that might be getting in the way?

wowfudge · 09/02/2019 14:21

Well I've now lost 12lbs. Hooray! I weigh everything, count the calories and write it all down so nothing is forgotten. I have almond milk to make a big latte when I get up, but other than a little bit of milk in the occasional cup of tea, I don't have milk. I eat yoghurt and cheese and other sources of calcium in my food so I'm not missing out on it. I used to drink two or three big milky lattes a day.

Please don't be disheartened Buffalo - there might be something getting in the way or you might even have faulty scales.

If it helps, I've done it once before and I lost a stone and a half in 6 weeks and wasn't a diligent as I am being now. I was so pleased I didn't really stick to it for the remaining couple of weeks and I did nothing in terms of maintenance/dealing with the things I needed to to not go back to bad habits. If you are determined, you will achieve your goal hottub.
