Blood sugar diet thread 13

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Thanks thenewaveragebear do you have a week by week breakdown of that. Congratulations by the way.

thisyeargoodyear · 26/01/2019 13:32

End of week 2 and I am down 11.5 lbs in total and I have lost 9.5 cm from my waist and 7.5 cm from my hips since starting. I am very happy. I also took photos (for the first time on a diet) and I can't believe the difference in 2 weeks.

I haven't been so strict with food this week (still sticking between 800 to a maximum of 950 calories a day), and feel much more comfortable with the diet now.

Slinky i don't really have a week by week breakdown, you can see from the graph that it was pretty consistently downward. I didn't get the initial whoosh weightloss when I first started this time though, I kept up a fairly low carb eating regime in the time between.

Having a much better week, my sweet tooth seems to have disappeared and i've been consistent in my exercising.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 26/01/2019 16:20

Well done hottub.

I've now lost just over a stone in 3 weeks, but it has really slowed down.

Realistically I could/should lose another stone but I really don't know if I can do that in the remaining 5 weeks. If I do manage it then I will switch to some sort of maintenance, possibly trying to do a version of 5:2 but with 800 calories on the diet days rather than 500 as I wouldn't want to lose any more. However, my challenge will be not to go too mad on the non-diet days.

thetwinkletoescollective · 26/01/2019 16:41

Hello everyone,

I have just ordered the Fast800 book after people speaking about it on mumsnet. It should be here tomorrow.

I have a few questions: Do you know if Oatley Barrista milk would be allowed?

I already go to an early morning exercise class most week days (but I am getting bigger not smaller..my body loves to lay fat down I think..) do you think I should just stick to the 800 cals or incorporate more food?

howhowhow · 26/01/2019 18:26

So I accidentally drank a glass of Prosecco. Will it stall me for days? (Writing holding said glass...).

thenewaveragebear1983 · 26/01/2019 18:33

Twinkle oat milk, yes- but check the carbs because of all the milk subs I think it's the carbiest one. Buy unsweetened. My Dsis is dairy free and she claims coconut milk is the nicest in coffee/tea.
With regards to your exercise, I cannot really do 800 with any consistency because I run a lot, my body just fights me after a while. So see how you go. If you do increase calories, increase them by eating more BSD foods rather than adding carbs, then you should be ok.

How no, you'll be ok I reckon! What's the cals/carbs in a glass of bubbly?

thetwinkletoescollective · 26/01/2019 19:17

@thenewavereagebear1983 - thank you!

howhowhow · 27/01/2019 17:36

Well the good news is I lost 100grams overnight and didn't put any on after my half a bottle of Prosecco. Have been super careful today thought. Thought I was going to dive headfirst into the lasagne I made the kids for dinner.......

thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/01/2019 18:50

So if I drink 10 glasses of prosecco I'll lose a kilo.... nice! Grin

Rather overindulged last night, although only gin and slim so hopefully not too many calories. But then the toast when we got in, plus not the healthiest day today. Oh well, it was (sort of) worth it, and not the end of the world.

Potential for a good clear week on plan, I'm about to do my menu for the next few days and no major social events planned. I'm feeling slightly like I'm spiralling from one weekend to the next, and every day I'm having sugar battles which I really haven't done for ages. I feel as if I've not really got 100% back on it since Xmas so this week that's my challenge, plus no sugar at all.

It's nearly February, I'm running a 15k race in less than a month, so my training and nutrition need to be on track to achieve that.

JollyHostess · 27/01/2019 19:12

Hi all, I'd love to come and join you here! I read the new Fast 800 book after chocolate pig/fest Xmas, have about a stone to lose.
I'm on day 6 of 800 cals a day and am struggling both with hunger and with staying on track. I've had a few coffees with sugar free syrup and have had a bit of Viennetta couple of times. Work is really hard because I'm a bit bored at the moment and being so hungry is very difficult 😂
Yesterday I had lost 3lb which was great but this morning I had put over half a pound back on, which was quite disheartening.

PresidentHump · 27/01/2019 19:16

Hi all. Just checking in. Took a day off plan yesterday but still only had one meal really - although it consisted of lots of cheese and crackers!! And wine. I weight three more pounds than I did on Friday which is just ridiculous - no way I've put that 'on'. Bit fed up with the constantly wildly different measurements but really am going to try and not weigh apart from Fridays anymore. Will probably go a bit over my calories today but back on it tomorrow. Relaxing at the weekend was always my plan so trying not to stress about it too much

Doittoday · 27/01/2019 19:21

Hey everyone, the prosecco diet sounds tempting!

Have managed to stick to the plan so far, and even stuck to black coffee in a National Trust tea shop this afternoon, whilst all around me were eating brownies.

Do you tend to weigh in on a particular day? Or is it just as and when? Not sure whether it would be better to jump on the scales lots, or only weekly?

thetwinkletoescollective · 27/01/2019 19:50

Oh my word. I am not going on the scales until I fit back into my jeans and I'll start from there.

Probably weekly weighing is preferable due to daily fluctuations though.

I just did my weekly meal planning and an ocado shop which comes tomorrow. I have a plan for tomorrow. Its day one of this diet for me tomorrow!!!

I am off to exercise early in the morning.

Is anyone taking any supplements to help? Extra fibre or magnesium?

MelanieCheeks · 27/01/2019 20:01

Weekly weigh in on Friday mornings.

I take a b vitamin when I remember, which turns my pee a startling bright greenish yellow!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/01/2019 22:04

I officially weigh on a Wednesday because that's the day I started, and that's the only time I record a loss (and I don't record gains on my tracker, (which is why my graph is nice and smooth downwards not zigzag!) - but I also weigh myself in the week if I've had either a brilliant or an awful day. So probably 4 times a week. I think it's too much, and I used to weigh daily. I find that I weigh myself more when I'm struggling to stay on track.

This week I'm not weighing til weds as I'll be way up after this weekend!
In the early days it can be very motivating to weigh daily if you're getting the lovely 1lb a day losses. If it's making you despondent I'd hold off for a few days. I was once told to 'weigh your food not yourself' and I try to apply that- if I'm weighing daily and feeling down about it then I focus instead on having a really good few days and tracking my calories properly.

Doittoday · 27/01/2019 23:20

Only recording losses is a great idea newaveragebear then you don't get all those frustrating time of the month blips! Obviously I am not planning on any gains, but you know.

I am taking about a gazillion supplements twinkletoes - they probably use up 100 calories between them! But think it might help me to stick to plan if I am nutritioned up to the eyeballs. B-complex, Fish oils, some thyroid boosting things, iron, and Cal-Mag, now I am not eating ice-cream 'to prevent osteoporosis'...

MelanieCheeks · 28/01/2019 19:53

Had a worrying dizzy episode this afternoon. I'd skipped breakfast but had eaten lunch, and had a quick walk outside. In case it was just hunger I ate a boiled egg, but that didn't help so I had to go home and lie down for a while. This is maybe the 3rd episode in a year, so I probably should see my Gp. ( And stop googling possible cause)

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/01/2019 20:07

Hope you are ok Melanie, Thanks

A bit over for me today, but I've really focussed on not having any sugar- and clearly I'd been having more than I thought because I've been craving terribly today. Coupled with a terrible night with poorly Ds coughing, it was probably doomed before I even began.

So, closing the kitchen on lots of calories, carbs ok, 20k Steps (5km run). Tomorrow I'm working in the morning so should get a good long fast in as i won't eat until I get home. I realised today that 1) I've been actually pretty rubbish since Xmas as the amount of time I reached for snacks today was unreal; 2) I need to get the kitchen scales out and weigh my portions every single time, as I do a lot of guesswork!

Hello, it’s me twinkle. (But when I am logged in on the iPad I have a different name). So I did it! Wooo wooo. Day one. Went to exercise. Had b- porridge, lunch - chicken and veg with a Greek yogurt and horse radish dressing, dinner was stir fry with halomi. I was feeling great but I am starting to feel hungry....I also took supplements today - Now slim, tricato pepper, fibre, ashwangda. I am going to have vile magnesium before bed.
Feeling like I have made a start.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 28/01/2019 21:18

I have had a good day so far. Two Heck chicken sausages for breakfast, chicken salad for lunch then went to Spin class after work and had a hard boiled egg, natural yoghurt and a handful of blueberries for dinner. However I'm now having to really resist the urge to eat something else as I'm really hungry.

I also managed to resist the crisp fest that the rest of the office indulged in at lunchtime so I dont want to give in now! The trouble is that dh bought some amazing sourdough bread at the weekend and I cant help fantasizing about toasting it and smothering it in peanut butter....
