Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Hot tub I couldn't manage that! I have a really bad addiction to raw cake mix (it's the texture not the taste) and I have to really work at controlling it. The made cakes are not so bad. Currently made 30 vanilla and 30 chocolate! Although I have managed to only taste a tiny bit for quality control purposes.

Wow, both of you must have super-strong willpower for cake making whilst following this way of eating!

I will have a look for the Paul McKenna book, thanks. I do walk quite a bit, and play a little bit of sport but injuries keep cropping up - lack of normal exercise is probably contributing to it all going pear shaped recently, and fatness making injuries more likely. Vicious circle and all that. Maybe there are low impact/no squats/injury friendly workouts on youtube...

Just checking in - day three today!

I’m finding it best to eat 2 meals a day. I woke up with a cracking headache this morning but that has disappeared as the day has gone on. Been drinking loads of water and trying to stick hard to the calorie limit, especially as I’m at the start to get things going.

At the moment I’m really enjoying the challenge of vegan low carb. I did low carb a few times before I went vegan but the veganism is definitely adding to the challenge as is the calorie counting!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/01/2019 20:04

Hippo I'd be really interested to hear some of your meals, I'm not vegan or veggie but I resolved to eat more vegan meals this year as my diet is very meat and dairy heavy.

I'm closing the kitchen, way over on calories (nearly 1800, it was planned though!) but that's still less than my daily tdee so I'm still happy with that. Carbs are over (because I may have sampled a cupcake!) but I have done an insane 30k steps today. Yep, that's ridiculous. 15km was my run, but the rest was just being crazy busy, cleaning, school runs, errands. I am knackered now!!

Hello, can I join you? Been doing fast800 for 3 weeks, I didnt weight before I started as too scared as I know I have just over 3 stone to lose. I did weigh the week after and this week and I've lost ..... 2 lb. my jeans are just as tight as at Christmas so feeling a bit disheartend. Been sticking to between 600 and 800 a day with carb content between 30 and 40, fat about 40 and protein around 50.

I have brunch about 11.30 and dinner at 6 then nothing else until brunch at 11.30 the next day.

Really not sure where I am going wrong, has anyone else had this?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/01/2019 21:54

Hi nick, welcome! Few things it could be- are you drinking enough water? You need to drink a lot to get things moving. Also if you've started a new exercise regime, that can stall your weightloss. Could it be that you're constipated or bloated, or due on?

I'd suggest to put your actual food diary up here if you want to, maybe we can have a look and see. Are you using a calorie tracker? I would say to avoid going as low as 600 cals too often unless you're doing a 5:2 and it's a fast day. Please don't get too disheartened, could it be possible that you lost a lot in the first week before you weighed yourself? Also, if you don't have much visceral fat, or you've been previously doing a low carb diet then sometimes you won't see the initial 'whoosh' of weight, which is usually a few lbs if retained water!

Morning everyone, just wanted to say hi to the new joiners and check in. I'm in the middle of week three and have lost 12lb, 3 inches from my waist and 3% in body fat. Very very happy although, strangely, I have been hungrier than normal lately so struggled with sticking to the 800. I know it's ok to go over but I feel sort of superstitious about it.
Hope you are all doing well.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 25/01/2019 09:47

I've just finished week 3 and have lost a total of 1 stone 1lb. However, the weight loss has definitely slowed in the last week. I think I've been a bit cavalier about portion sizes so will need to go back to weighing and measuring everything, which is a pain but worth it longer term.

I am now aiming at being another 10lbs down by the end of the 8 weeks, so that means 2lbs a week until then. If I can manage more then so much the better.

MelanieCheeks · 25/01/2019 10:04

Just finishing week 3 this week, and a wee bit of a whoosh! I started at just under 11 st, and this morning am just over 10 1/2, which I'm delighted about (because I've not been too good at sticking to all the principles)

This week I've been avoiding snacks, and going with just a cup of tea or 3 for breakfast.

Ggirl27 · 25/01/2019 10:30

Good to hear you are all doing so well with this diet - my trousers are definitely feeling looser! Nearly at the end of week 1 Smile

VenusInfers · 25/01/2019 10:48

Hi all!

Another newbie, transferring over from the thread about the Fast 800 book. (waves to bear).

About 2 1/2 weeks on the diet and lost 10lbs, which is delightful. Aiming to lose another 4lbs. Or rather, aiming to lose enough weight to fit into my smallest dress & pair of jeans. 4lbs should do the trick.

Some of you seem to have very sophisticated weighing scales, my crapulous old mechanical ones are not even consistent about weight! I have to jump on and off a few times and average it out in my head. Such fun! Do you find the info on water percentage, fat percentage etc to be useful? And how do you know if it is accurate?

PresidentHump · 25/01/2019 10:48

Weigh in 3 today and two pounds off. Bit disappointed but will keep going. 25 pounds off in total and lightest Ive been since may last year

Hiphopopotamus · 25/01/2019 14:10

Hi bear

Don’t worry - I’m definitely more hippo than hiphop at the moment!

I’m using a few meat substitutes which I don’t usually do but it’s a good way to get my protein. So last nights dinner was a stir fry with lots of low calorie veg, some vegan ‘chicken’ pieces and a tablespoon each of peanut butter and soy sauce stirred in. Really delicious and filling. I’m also having a lot of tofu - for breakfast I’m doing a lot of tofu scrambles with various things mixed in. (A teaspoon of vegan pesto is delicious in the tofu) I’m finding the food really good. So far I’m down 4 pounds in 3 days!

Justanothergirl19 · 25/01/2019 14:23

Hi Venus,
Just wanted to answer your questions about scales with my thoughts. Obviously, I don't have absolute proof that the numbers I am seeing are 100% correct, however, the trend for abdominal fat, water (always spikes before my period), muscle mass (absolutely rocketed after a week of skiing and always after sustained exercise) are consistent over time and for each member of the family to make me believe that they are correct. Also the fact that for the first time with a set of scales, the number is the same, whether I get on the scales 10 times, in different parts of the bathroom, on carpet or tiles is a good indicator to me. Again, I am mostly interested in a trend (downward hopefully!) than an absolute number. There are a few 🤔 For example body fat changing by a fraction before and after going to the loo but, at the end of the day, the way it works is by sending an electrical impulse through your body which is affected by liquid so perhaps that makes sense.
Hope it helps x

thenewaveragebear1983 · 25/01/2019 20:32

Do you ever have one of those days where it's actually quite frightening just exactly how much you can eat?! Yep, that's me today. All the bad stuff and lots of it.

Try again tomorrow. We're at a wedding reception tomorrow night (which I've just found out there is no food going to be served???!!!- but that might be a blessing in disguise) so provided I can stop scoffing and stick to plan, then just a few G&T slims at the Do, it shouldn't be too awful.

Hot on and off I've been doing it three years. The problem today is that I stupidly ate some sugar yesterday and it sometimes just spirals for me, I am a terrible binge eater. And I think when I'm tired I get tired of fighting it? I'm much much better than I used to be though, although I really need to get back to a nice zero sugar state, as the last few weeks I've had odd tastes here and there and it doesn't help me.

Day 9 for me today. Weighed in first thing and pleased to see a drop so I’m now down by 9lbs! I’m extra pleased as normally I lose 6-7 lbs in the first week of any diet and then stay stuck in plateau-city indefinitely. So today’s result has given me hope that it won’t be so bad this time. It is a good job it has worked tho as I have been super strict, most days coming in easily below 800. I have fasted everyday and only eaten between 4.30/5pm and 8/8.30pm. I’ve had soup to start (homemade with low cal veg like celery or mushroom) a low carb, high protein dinner and maybe another cup of soup later on. That has been it, if that didn’t work I have no idea what to try next- chopping off limbs?!
Also had several trips to the gym. Was brave enough to face the fancy fat/muscle % contraption that they have at gym too thinking that seeing progress on that ratio might be able to motivate me when scales aren’t. Other than being a higher bmi than I would like (obvs) I was pleasantly surprised with my results. I have a pretty high % muscle and v low visceral fat rating so lots of positives for my first week.
I’m off out to friends for a meal tomorrow night so will fast all day and just have evening meal (plus wine) I’ve decided to not calorie count and just enjoy. Also it’s my birthday this week so will prob do the same that day, fasting for the day will limit the damage I reckon so hopefully I can stay pretty much on track. I am framing the weight loss as a birthday gift to myself, a nicer treat than any birthday cake could be!

Is there anyone out there doing BSD for over a month who started at around 13 stone? How much weight did you lose in weeks 1, 2, 3 and 4 and did you exercise?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 26/01/2019 11:00

Slinky i started at 13.3 the first round and lost 21lb in 8 weeks. I was very strict on the food but did no exercise. Last jan I started at 12.6, began running, and have attached my graph, much more of a gentle curve but I'm maintaining much more efficiently.

In the beginning I was huffing and puffing my way round 1-2kms, now I run 35km a week and lift weights so obviously my energy expenditure has increased massively.

Arrrgggh my husband has gone on this diet with me. Pleased for him. Unfortunately he appears to weigh almost exactly the same as me with the same downward trajectory and my Fitbit scales keep thinking he is me and his weight keeps appearing on my mfp weight progress graph.
