Blood sugar diet thread 13

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

It's the morning caffeine kick that I'm after.
Ah I see. Well, There's worse things you could do. Something for in a few weeks time maybe?

If you're not veggie but hate cooking, what about fish? I find pre prepped fish things often are the 'healthiest' as they seem to have less additives and the fish itself tends to be in relatively close to original form (as opposed to chicken or meat type things). I have these at least once or twice a week, the salmon is only 4g carbs, the battered one is 13g carbs (others in the range are lower though), big bowl of frozen mixed veg- really simple quick dinner? (Do they have Young's in Australia?)

Hi all. Currently pissed off as I weighed myself yesterday and I was three pounds more than what I was on Friday. And this morning I weighed ANOTHER pound more. What the hell! So cheesed off. I've had 400 cals today and am not hungry so tempted to skip eating anything else

thenewaveragebear1983 · 22/01/2019 17:57

Welcome hiphop, I'm sure it will work, we've had vegetarians on here that have had great success.

President that's a shame, please don't get disheartened. Are you drinking plenty of water? Could it be totm related, or have you started an exercise regime that you weren't before, as these can cause water retention?

PresidentHump · 22/01/2019 18:15

Thanks Bear. I've just had my period over the weekend so lost in the run up to it. Might need to drink more water. So annoying!

greatbighillofhope · 22/01/2019 18:34

Presidenthump, it might be useful to track your weight using an app like happyscale.
It averages out your weight loss so that the weird, random highs, lows and plateaus don't skew your results too much. It also breaks down your weight loss goal into milestones along the way which helps it seem less daunting and let’s you easily see how you’re doing overall.
I am usually the queen of plateaus so hoping I don’t have too much trouble with them on this diet!

greatbighillofhope · 22/01/2019 18:44

Just taking note of what’s been said about diet drinks and artificial sweeteners, there’s lots of evidence now that these may be interfering with our gut microbiome and causing inflammation of the gut and actually contributing to weight gain and obesity.
Personally, I am pretty convinced that a teenage addiction to Diet Coke caused me to develop psoriasis (via leaky gut) which I have been struggling to control for the rest of my life.

MelanieCheeks · 22/01/2019 18:54

I slept really deeply last night - so much I was late getting up! But not hungry, had a cuppa whcih lasted me till 11 when I had a handful of nuts.

A few people have told me how well I'm looking, and I know I have more energy.

My snack tip - celery sticks with a laughing cow triangle squished down the centre. or even a drizzle of Marmite.

Oblomov19 · 22/01/2019 19:50

I'm having a nightmare. I can't stop eating. This Dry January isn't doing me any good at all. I haven't lost ANY weight. Angry

onanothertrain · 22/01/2019 20:05

I'm the same oblomov . Constantly looking in the fridge and have had a few off plan things this month. Where's my self control gone??
I think I'll try going back to eating breakfast, I seemed to eat less then.
Either that or I've got worms 🤔

PresidentHump · 22/01/2019 20:35

greatbighillofhope thanks. I use MFP and only log my weight on a Friday morning. Am going to try and stick with that but will look up your app

TwirlyWitch · 22/01/2019 20:54

Day two for me and didn’t eat a thing until dinner, so finishing today on only 427kcals Shock
Didn’t feel hungry at all and felt quite hyper which is unusual for me! Long may it last!

hiphop I’m a veggie but I try to be vegan a couple of days a week. tofu is my main protein source and very low carb, the legumes not so much but houmous isn’t too bad carb wise.

Was 3lbs down this morning too Star

luckylips · 22/01/2019 21:24

I'm finding it hard too

I think it's a combination of it being cold and skipping breakfast, doesn't seem to be helping.

Shake of the plan tomorrow! But here's today eatings:

Menu - coffee, shake, soup, 2 x chicken legs, 20 cashews.

luckylips · 22/01/2019 21:29

*shake up I mean!

Day two and loving it so far! Finished the day on 810 calories and feeling like I’ve eaten well.

Ggirl27 · 24/01/2019 10:31

Hi there - new starter here! This is my fourth day of 800 Calories and I'm finding it easier than I thought. Removing sugar has stopped me feeling so hungry all the time which has really worked BUT I have a lot of weight to lose, realistically about 7 stone and I know that I'll be really good for about 6 weeks and then get really bored of it. I have told myself that I'll follow the diet to the letter Monday to Friday and have 2 days at the weekend where I'm mindful but not so strict. Does anyone else do this? Do you think the carrot of a more relaxed weekend will do the trick this time?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/01/2019 10:49

Ggirl welcome. Firstly, you don't have to do 800 calories at all, and certainly not every day. So I'd suggest you find a strategy that works for you -so it might be one Total 'no count but on plan' day; it might be a 5:2 strategy so 2 days strict fast, 5 days more calories. It might be an occasional blow out 'all the carbs' day (but this is the hardest in my experience to get back on track with) - or whatever. And it can change every week, so you might look at your schedule and decide this week you can do alternate days 800, or accept that maybe you will not achieve it at the weekend, or whatever.

What I will say though, is if you tell yourself that after 6 weeks you're going to fall off the wagon 'because that's what I always do' then I virtually guarantee that you will. I bet you never believed you'd go 3 days without sugar, but you did. That's amazing. This time last year I never believed I'd be running 10 miles for fun, but I just did. Time for some positive mental attitude!!!

'Whether you think you can, or whether you think you can't- you're probably right'

OP posts:
Ggirl27 · 24/01/2019 12:19

I thought I'd try and be tough with myself from the start - if I give myself a target I'm more likely to stick with it. I've done the 5:2 thing before and lost weight but I'd like to lose the weight more quickly and consistently I find it very disheartening when I try really hard and lose nothing. Also I would really like to lose 2 stone before April for a family occasion. I suppose PMA is hard to come by, I've been overweight all of my life and have never managed to achieve sustainable weight loss before...

TwirlyWitch · 24/01/2019 12:37

waves to all the other new starters

I’m with newbear on the positive attitude. Day 4 for me and as strange as it is to say- I’m really enjoying it! I feel in control, lots more energy, sleeping better and I’m mentally positive I can totally do this for 8 weeks. The half stone down on the scales also helps! Grin

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/01/2019 13:31

Ggirl this diet will get good results, it's proven! It's probably like nothing else you've done before especially if you are used to low fat, slimming club type diets. Personally for me, I found it easier to go cold turkey on the heavy carbs, but one day a week just have a big feed and not calorie count, so have a big meal but all on plan. I love my food, and found the tiny portions sometimes didn't cut it for me. I still do that now after all these months and to be honest it forms a big part of my maintenance strategy!
However it can be the sort of diet that has plateaus, and occasional unexpected gains, so be prepared for that. (Eg Losing weight so quickly at first can do things to your hormones and that can cause water retention etc), and then suddenly you'll lose 4lb overnight! Taking some photos and measurements at the start can be really motivating at these times.

The biggest motivator for me is amazing food, I love trying a new recipe book and cooking really tasty food. I don't mind not having pudding if I know I'm having something really tasty for dinner. Tonight we're having lamb steaks, and baked figs with goats cheese, so I'm hanging on to that thought to get me through the day!!

I need my willpower today, I'm just about to bake 100 cupcakes for the PTA! Torture!

Doittoday · 24/01/2019 14:07

Can I join you all please? I've tried SW but after a good start ended up putting the same 4lbs on and off for months. I did OK on BSD for a few weeks ages ago, but fell off the wagon with emotional eating/stress.

I have to do something now though, as have 5 stone to lose to get within healthy weight range, and prediabetes/fatty liver/joint pain are all making me feel like an old crock. I am exactly the same age as Faye Towzer, but I look like a fat granny. Blush

The Fast800 book arrived yesterday, and I have started the diet today - will finish reading it tonight!

Does anyone have any tips for dealing with hangry-ness (am going to try taking B vitamins every day in case this helps) and if you have managed to fix emotional eating to do this, what worked for you?

Welcome doit, I am still a pretty bad emotional eater (well, hormonal totm Eater really) and I have tried various things but I do still struggle in the week before I come on and also when I'm very tired. I have found the Paul McKenna sugar hypno book really helpful, plus it's useful alongside this as it gives a really easy to understand breakdown of the sugar science too. Do you do any exercise? That's the other thing that gets me through, it's great for my mental health. I think the hardest thing is when you know you don't want it but eat it anyway, and know that it will do no good but even as it's going in you're thinking 'I shouldn't eat this!' But still do. That's why I harp on about positive thoughts and smashing these beliefs we have about ourselves (eg. I'm Bear and I always eat loads of crap when my period is due because I'm weak and can't control myself) and spend some time building up a different belief, etc etc. It's a big life shift for me and I'm still working on it. Recognising your triggers and having a system in place is really useful. For example, if I know I'm in a snacky mood, I'll cut up loads of cucumber and cherry toms and put them right in through front of the fridge so when I go fridge diving they are the first thing I see.
