Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Oblomov tries to recreate Wagamama's Wok fried greens. My fave.

They were good. But nowhere near as good as the real thing.

Well my experimental muffins were quite pleasant actually, a bit cakey in texture which was nice. Quite high in cals for what they are though. I'm going to try again later in the week and take out the veg ingredients and swap for cheese!

Closing the kitchen today on 1003 cals, 70g carbs (I have had a lot of veg today) and 11k steps (no running today)

I'm working tomorrow, so hopefully another good day in store as I can just make my packed lunch and that's it, no snacks or other things available.

870 calories, 23,279 steps. Might weigh tomorrow Shock

onanothertrain · 21/01/2019 20:47

hottub what about olives, a boiled egg or a piece of cheese

TwirlyWitch · 21/01/2019 21:53

Day 1 finished on 803 calories. 49g carbs - is that too high? I’ve found it alright but it’s hit home that this is every day for the next 8 weeks- seems impossible!!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/01/2019 21:54

Hot you could have maybe half a red pepper and a chunk of cucumber cut into crudités, and hummus, or Philadelphia cheese? You'd get a good plateful for 100 cals! Or celery dipped in salsa or Phili?
Tesco do Greek yog in 100g pots so each one is 125 cals, if you need something portable?

Or you could bake mini crustless quiche- eggs, veg, cheese, bit of baking powder - pour into a greased muffin tin and they puff up into little 'muffins', you can add tuna, ham, bacon etc. Make a big batch and cal count them so maybe 2 for 100 cals?

Can I jump on please? I have been doing 800 cals a day for the last five days and lost 6 lbs! (I want to lose 2 stone overall) Especially impressive for thIs time of the month and I'm extra pleased as I'd been stuck on a plateau for the last 6 months and couldn't seem to move either up or down. On a really good week I wouldn't budge down but even more bizarrely, on a very bad week eg christmas the scales didn't go up either! it seemed as though my body was determined to stay that weight whatever I did. I had been fasting til 6pm several days a week, eating well the rest of the time and exercising but was well and truly plateaued.
So i decided more extreme methods were called for and thought id give 800 cals a try. I have also tried to bring my eating window of about 4 hours forwards to 5pm so I'm not eating too late (MM reports eating late has v bad effects on blood sugar).
I have found it surprisingly easy so far (only 5 days tho) I've made lots of soup as that always makes me feel comfortingly full. I tend to make it just one meal a day; soup to start, protein and veg main course and maybe a boiled egg to finish if I've got a few calories left. Using loads of diff herbs/lemon/vinegars to keep it interesting.

I was wondering if anyone would be prepared to share their experience of eating this way, the weight loss journey etc? it'd be really helpful to have an idea of what to expect and be inspired to continue when things get tougher. I'm scared of hitting another plateau, there'll be nowhere else to go if 800 cals doesn't crack it for me!

PenelopeFlintstone · 22/01/2019 05:33

God, I suck at diets. My weight went back up. I just forget that I'm doing it!
I've just worked out a diet. I'm going to eat the same thing every day: 2 coffees with milk and sugar, shake at lunch, shake at 4, 2 eggs and 1/3 tin baked beans for tea, and a tomato. Equals 776 calories.
I'm going away in 10 days and need to be able to do some trousers up that are a couple of inches apart at the waist! Actually, I'll buy some cans of Pepsi Max and ditch the two coffees - I really need to fit into those trousers!!
I promise to myself right now to stick to this for 10 days.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 22/01/2019 07:13

Morning all.

Hot full fat everything! The calorie difference is not even significant sometimes because low fat stuff often has sugar added. If you like Philadelphia you can get packs of 4 mini 'snap pots' and they do a cracked black pepper one which is really tasty. The Greek yog shouldn't raise your blood sugar as it's lactose, but saying that I do find that if I eat a lot of it I sometimes get sugar cravings, which I think is because the lactose has some effect, so I would just monitor your own reaction to it,

Great welcome! I like the streamlined diet for a few days. It means I don't have to think about food for most of the day! No reason why you couldn't do this for a short period but you might get very bored! I don't think I could manage on one meal a day

Penelope 'I suck at diets' Grin
Repeat after me: I do not suck at diets. This is a 'pillar of belief' you have built about yourself, and it needs to be toppled over. Go and google some 1970's video footage of tower blocks being knocked down!!
Do you mind if I critique your menu a bit? I hope you find it helpful. Personally I would ditch the sugar (I know we've talked about this before, but it could be giving you insulin surges that's making you hungrier), and ditch the Pepsi Max. These two things could be throwing you totally haywire all day, and into the next day. The calories are negligible, but the impact of them could be significant.
I'd check the ingredients on your shakes as well if they are shop bought, post a photo of the ingredients on here if you like? I can give you some good recipes if you want them.
The other thing I would recommend would be getting some fat into your evening meal- beans are relatively high carb to fat ratio, and that could be leaving you hungry through the night. Maybe some cheese?

Hope everyone has a good day. I'm working today, with a long lunch break, so will come home and go for a quick run before going back for the afternoon!

I'm loving the food pics - thanks for sharing them!
I've not been logging but generally keeping to BSD principles.
I don't know what I weigh because my scales are jumping all over. It's a problem I've had since we moved. I'm not sure if something was bumped in transit or if the floors in this house are uneven (its quite an old house). Either way it makes it difficult to keep track. But, on the plus side, in the last week, both my DM and my DSIS have said I look as though I've lost weight.

luckylips · 22/01/2019 09:38

I failed at Day 2 as I was at a memorial and the food was little homemade pastries. No breakfast and was ravenous for dinner so overate.

Day 3 and back on it though! Coffee for breakfast, shake for lunch, nuts and blueberries for snacks, chicken and roasted veg for dinner.

PenelopeFlintstone · 22/01/2019 09:43

Thanks AverageBear
I don't want to respond to the coffee and Pepsi Max suggestions quite yet, if you don't mind clinging desperately to fizzy drink can but do you think I should just ditch the beans and add another egg and some cheese instead? Cheese omelette instead of eggs and beans?

PenelopeFlintstone · 22/01/2019 09:43

And, yes, I'll repeat that mantra in front of the mirror Grin

Hi everyone, just checking in. 2 weeks gone today and lost exactly 10lbs. Very very pleased with that. Really recommend a chicken, broccoli and cashew nut stir fry with (optional) a side of cauliflower rice. Really really yummy.

PenelopeFlintstone · 22/01/2019 11:08

Hi hotubhotties
I actually only have two a week at the moment (one on each of my two work days) but I like two sugared coffees every day and was thinking of having a Pepsi Max a day instead of the two coffees.
Good luck with your decision too Smile

PenelopeFlintstone · 22/01/2019 11:09

Whoops - I missed out a 't' in your name!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 22/01/2019 12:02

Penelope would you be able to drink sparkling water instead of Pepsi? I understand about the thirst quenching issue with fizzy drinks, but would soda water with lime or lemon slices, or maybe even mint help?
You don't have to give up anything btw (there's no naughty corner in here!) but when people are expressing that they are struggling the simplest advice to give is to start with the 'obvious' things! I hope you didn't think I was bossing you about! I clung to my sweeteners in coffee for so long because I convinced myself that life would be miserable without them, so I totally empathise.
Are you vegetarian? Beans are ok, they aren't the worst thing to have but they are low fat, so maybe increase your fat in that meal. You could try the taco spiced mixed beans (they tend to be with the tinned chickpeas/butterbeans etc) or the merchant gourmet puy lentils in tomato sauce (they come in a pouch) - they are both really tasty alternatives to Heinz beanz .

Penelope would you be able to drink sparkling water instead of Pepsi? It's the morning caffeine kick that I'm after.
the simplest advice to give is to start with the 'obvious' things! and I appreciate it very much Flowers
I hope you didn't think I was bossing you about! Not at all! I appreciate your help. I was joking when I said I didn't want to talk about that right now - maybe I didn't get the joke across fully Grin Sort of like, I know you're right but don't want to hear the truth Grin
Are you vegetarian? No, I'm not but I hate cooking.
really tasty alternatives to Heinz beanz I'll look in the shops but I'm in Australia and the range for that kind of thing is smaller. I might just have a cheese omelette. It's easy and I like them.
Thanks again for the advice Smile

Can I join this group? I’ve got a lot of weight to shift and need to reset my eating habits. It’s going to be more tricky as I’m vegan but I think I can do it. Started today with a scramble of tofu and spinach and a few slices of Seitan bacon. My carbs will definitely be slightly higher due to the veganism but I’m thinking that if I stick to the 800 calories and cut out all obvious carbs it can still work. Am I being delusional?
