Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Morning everyone Smile I start tomorrow and think I’m ready and prepared. Re read the book last night but I wondered if anyone knows if you can do this for longer than 8 weeks? I have a lot of weight to lose and I’ll be lucky to lose a quarter of what I need in those 8 weeks Blush

CarolDanvers · 20/01/2019 11:10

I didn’t do too well yesterday. First day that I slipped. I was looking after five children Shock so couldn’t do any exercise at all and then we ordered a dominos because I just couldn’t face cooking for them all. So I’d eaten well and got to my 800, but then scarfed down two slices of pepperoni pizza, which are apparently 234 calories each Sad. Back on today though and will go for a run later.

PresidentHump · 20/01/2019 11:18

Morning all.
Ate 630 calories of food yesterday plus a milky coffee and then several glasses of wine. Then a fistful of grated cheddar when I got home. I must say I don't feel great!

Twirlywitch yes I think in his fast 800 book he says 12 weeks? But I don't see why you couldn't do it for longer if you had more to lose. Bear is the expert though! Good luck!

Bluestitch · 20/01/2019 11:49

Just been catching up on this thread, some great losses, well done everyone.

I'm still only 6lb down since New Year's Day as this week have had unwell kids, lack of sleep and diet gone to pot. Starting afresh today though with renewed determination, feeling lucky I've not regained any despite lots of toast!

luckylips · 20/01/2019 11:49

I'm sorry I have been AWOL but jumping back in today starting the 8 weeks again.

Start weight 11st 5.

Menu - coffee, chicken & Halloumi salad... not sure on dinner as yet. Will report back later with a good day hopefully!

howhowhow · 20/01/2019 12:14

Pleased to report my pizza express excursion didn't lead to the 5lb gain I was fearful off. Am the same weight today. Resolved to be good today....... so interested in everyone else's menu as I struggle to know what to eat!

notapizzaeater · 20/01/2019 12:16

I'm 12lb in 12 days but out for lunch today to a birthday buffet with cocktails 🤞. Will try and be good !

notapizzaeater · 20/01/2019 12:20

How how how I had yesterday, cupful of warm water and lemon when I got up. rasher of bacon with scrambled egg mid morning copious cups of tea. For tea I had steamed smoked fish and stir fried cabbage with garlic. For supper I had 100g ice cream (actually more than I would have had if I'd just scooped it) with a drizzle of chic shot and had a cube of cheese for snack.

onanothertrain · 20/01/2019 12:20

I have had a shocking week, I've had such a sweet tooth which is unusual for me. I've had chocolate, cheesecake and sticky toffee pudding with custard. So bad that I was awake at 4am this morning feeling sick. I don't even have any excuses!
I'm determined to be good this week......

MelanieCheeks · 20/01/2019 12:49

Yeah, I've been a slacker this weekend too. But determined to be back on track again soon!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/01/2019 12:55

Welcome Twirly! you can do more than 8 weeks, I think on the fast 800 thread with Michael he said you can do up to 20 weeks. But you might find that after 8 weeks at 800 calories you could switch to 5:2 and still see good results (if not better, because you won't be as likely to 'fall off the wagon' What I found after the initial fast loss was that the weight loss slowed to what might be considered a good 'normal' (so eg 1-2lb a week for me) but it wasn't a chore like with conventional diets, wasn't a constant battle with cravings etc, and was consistent. If you have a lot to lose, a consistent weekly loss of 1-2lbs is over 7 stone in a year, which is marvellous and healthy and sustainable.

TwirlyWitch · 20/01/2019 14:37

Bear that’s great info thank you so much. I’m excited to start tomorrow! I have just over 7 stone to lose and to do that in a year would be absolutely incredible!

Notapizzaeater I’m an absolute tea monster (over 10 huge mugs a day) do you drink it with milk or black? There’s no mention about milk in the book so I’m not sure whether I’m going to have to give up the milky cuppas.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/01/2019 14:50

You can have milk but just count the cals, 100 ml of semi skim is 50 cals, I get 3 coffees with that.

OP posts:
howhowhow · 20/01/2019 16:35

I've switched to almond milk (unsweetened) cals are much lower.

CarolDanvers · 20/01/2019 17:38

700 calories today, clawing back the pepperoni pizza calories from yesterday. Didn’t get out for a run for various child related reasons but definitely will tomorrow.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/01/2019 18:03

Good day today, I haven't calorie counted but I've had 3 decent meals all BSD friendly, and run 10km.

I am really going to try my best to have a good week this week, I'd like to get sub-1000 cals at least a few times! The key is for no sugar, I had rather a lapse of self control last week, and it becomes a habit very quickly. We are at a wedding reception on Saturday but otherwise I have nothing that should affect my meals, and I'm actually working on Tuesday and Wednesday which should also help as I'm away from the kitchen!

notapizzaeater · 20/01/2019 18:41

@TwirlyWitch - I drink gallons as well, I use BOB milk, it's 41 calories for 100ml. I can get lots of cups out of that !

howhowhow · 20/01/2019 19:21

I skipped breakfast today (had 2 cups of coffee with almond milk). At lunch time I had 120g of total with a squeeze of lemon (surprisingly filling).

Dinner was lemon chicken with baby corn and sugar snap peas. I had it with quinoa which has shoved me a bit over on my carbs (I've been aiming for 20g but think I've done 50 today). I'm absolutely stuffed. Finished eating about half 6 so will get a good fast in. Bang on 800 calories. X

thisyeargoodyear · 20/01/2019 20:00

Does anyone know what the ideal macros are? I have been looking for the recommended carbohydrate: protein: fat ratio, but I can't find anything. In his book it says at least 50-60 g protein per day which is about 30% of my daily calories but I don't know how to split the remaining 70%. I am using my fitness pal to track calories and macros.

ThanksSmile

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/01/2019 21:21

This this is a typical good day for me: (bear in mind I tend to have more than 800 cals because I exercise a lot and I'm on maintenance!). Fat and protein should form the bulk of your food.

Good morning all, Monday again!

Hot I probably would give the fruit a miss to be honest, particularly the oranges as they are very high in fructose. It's not the calories per se, it's the fact that the fructose skews your appetite as it's not 'recognised' by the body in the same way as glucose. If you need a snack I'd either have something more substantial but fat/protein like some cheese, avocado, nuts etc, or add those extra 80-100 cals into your meal and do without the snack (although you are diabetic aren't you? So would you be able to do this safely?)

luckylips · 21/01/2019 09:49

Day 1 done and 2.5lbs down already!

To the PP asking for meal ideas, I eat a lot of eggs, chicken and green veg on this diet. Limit fruit to berries. Nuts as snacks instead of crisps.

MelanieCheeks · 21/01/2019 10:22

Plan of attack this week - lots of water, no snacks, and time restricted eating. Probably delay breakfast to about 10, but I need my morning cuppa!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/01/2019 16:21

A good day so far for me, I've made chicken bone broth soup with lentils, butternut and chilli for lunch, and then l've made a bolognese sauce with half mince/half quorn which I think will actually do two portions.

Small experiment with some almond flour, courgette, leftover roasted beetroot and a few other bits and bobs to make these. Now they look lovely, they smell lovely, but the proof is in the eating! I'll post the recipe on the meal planning thread!
