Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

I’d like the soup recipe please Smile

CarolDanvers · 17/01/2019 22:12

@PresidentHump I can't come off it. If I do that's it. The only weight loss regimes that have ever worked for me is when suddenly my head is in the right space and I follow the rules to the letter. If I dot I lose hope frighteningly quickly

@thenewaveragebear1983 I will try that but I just find myself obsessing about the meal that's coming later and am totally preoccupied with it. I think I actually have quite an unhealthy relationship with food, which is why I need rules and structure to be able for do it.

Will be two weeks on Monday Shock

PresidentHump · 18/01/2019 07:50

Morning all. Weigh in this morning and five pounds off, making it 23 pounds in two weeks! This is obviously a lot but I'm v v overweight, have never done this low carb thing before and have also had a tummy bug (although I did still eat)

I said I'd do this for two weeks only but its hard to justify not carrying on. Weekend will be tricky as always not least because I have a cooking class on Sunday!

I'd like the cauliflower soup recipe too please.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 18/01/2019 08:26

Amazing president, that's awesome!

I'm down 2 lbs this week and 5 since in total since New Year's Day. I'm happy with that

PresidentHump · 18/01/2019 11:35

Well done Gymtonic!

Justanothergirl19 · 18/01/2019 12:18

Roasted Cauliflower soup (2 portions):

400 gr Cauliflower florets (either buy whole or in florets, this is the net weight after discarding leaves etc)
3 tsp olive oil
cayenne pepper
half an onion
one clove of garlic
50 ml double cream
400-500 ml of chicken or vegetable stock (depending on how thick you like the soup)
optional (but very recommended!): 25 gr of grated cheddar as topping

  1. Clean up the cauliflower, split it into florets then spread it on a baking sheet with 2 tsp of oil and a small sprinkle of cayenne pepper, depending on how much of a kick you want in the soup.
  2. Roast if for 20 mins
  3. Saute the onion in the remaining 1tsp of oil, then add the garlic for one more minute.
  4. Add the roasted cauliflower and sauce for a couple of minutes
  5. Add salt and pepper to your liking
  6. Add the stock and boil for 20 mins
  7. Blitz the soup with a stick blender until creamy and smooth, then add the cream and mix
  8. Shave the cheddar (or gruyere or whatever cheese you like, I had Comte) on top or have as a side
  9. Enjoy!

This for me made 2 decent portions, MFP gives me 175Kcal per portion with 13g of carbs. You can obviously make a lot more and adjust calories accordingly.
I really recommend it x

thenewaveragebear1983 · 18/01/2019 12:30

Sounds lovely just, I will try that next week I think!

Here's my hipster lunch- mashed avocado on rye bread toast with scrambled egg. The rye bread is interesting, but not as bready as I hoped.

That looks really nice, Besr. The Village Bakery makes a nice rye bread, a bit more doughy than the proper German kind. You can find it in most supermarkets.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 18/01/2019 22:26

Well, I'm now 18 days into this and still doing ok. I lost 4lbs in the last weekend. I'm managing to stick to the diet. Dh chomped his way through a pack of Kettle Chips this evening, accompanied by wine. I just gazed longingly!

PresidentHump · 19/01/2019 00:36

Well done Emma. Is alcohol forbidden? I've had two glasses tonight (only just over my cals) and will have another tomorrow.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 19/01/2019 06:13

I think alcohol is strongly discouraged. For me, alcohol weakens my will power. If I have a drink then the temptation to have crisps will.be very strong!

Plus I'm too greedy to swap food for alcohol!

howhowhow · 19/01/2019 07:48

Down another whole lb this morning. I stalled in week 2 and it seemed like a hard slog for not much return but now seem to be on a lb down a day. Which is great. I am wondering why I didn't go on this diet when I was 13 stone or 12 stone and why I waited until I was 16. 15lb 2 now from a starting weight of 15lb 13 on 2 January. Can't wait to break 14.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 19/01/2019 08:31

Morning everyone.

You can have alcohol but choose low sugar (so, red wine, spirits and soda, etc rather than beer or cider) I usually drink red but I'm doing dry January and actually don't really miss it now. It definitely stops me eating snacks in the evenings.

Of to bootcamp this morning in the cold wet muddy fields. Grim.

Welcome hot! Be warned that when your slimming world consultant finds out you're not eating sugar, fruit, pasta etc and spending your syns on cheese and olive oil she will get attacks of the vapours every time you step on the scales. It is against their business model for people to lose weight without taking out shares in Muller. Ok, I jest. But in my experience the two diets couldn't be more different. I was using up the last 8 weeks of a prepaid countdown when I started BSD, so I attended to get weighed, but I very quickly found that the classes had no benefit and the foods we eat on BSD pretty much mean your 'syns' are Sky high every single day. (However, I was slimmer of the week several tines in the 8 weeks after starting BSD!!) I can see the benefit in a group weigh in though, especially when you're just starting out. Good loss so far!

Bootcamp was grim. Had a delicious brunch of peri peri eggs and avocado. Very tasty. The dc are making pizza tonight, and I'm going to do mine on a whole wheat tortilla instead of dough- still carbs but significantly lower (about 14g per tortilla)

Also hot, I totally understand about your 'fear' of fats, and getting used to them can take a while. I used to feel I could 'taste' the fat in my mouth. You will notice that sometimes you just don't feel hungry and that's because the fat is so satiating. I also really noticed my skin condition improving, and my hair and nails are softer and more nourished. I cannot stand low fat now, but you're right, it's a huge change when we've been told fat is the devil for so long!

My only other tips are: drink lots of water, eat some salt every day, and keep your fats up to see you through the initial detox (although you're five days in now so hopefully the worst bit is over now). Oh, and take some measurements or even pictures to compare in a few weeks, you will be amazed!

Hot that's what I was like last January. I would just say to myself "it's my turn now" like a little mantra. I still say it sometimes now, when I'm running. My turn to be the slim, confident one. Go for it!!!

OP posts:
howhowhow · 19/01/2019 16:49

Oh dear. I took the kids to pizza express and had the mozzarella salad and chicken Caesar. I racked up 1000 cals. I didn't eat the dough balls that came with it though. Going to have an oxo cube for dinner in the hope of minimising any damage! According to mfp I have done 32 grams of carb, 74 grams of fat and 59 of protein.
It was yummy though.

Justanothergirl19 · 19/01/2019 17:14

Welcome hot! Just another thing to think about in relation to the fat fear, fats are not the devil and play in important role in many digestive purposes such as the absorption of many vitamins. Beacuse of how many calories they contain, realistically on 800 calories you won't be able to have a crazy amounts of fats because you will want to get the most amount of food for your allowance. It will be a matter of quality vs quantity and you should be having mostly good fats like olive oil and avocados.

8lb down here today!

thisyeargoodyear · 19/01/2019 17:35

Hi everyone

I am a neewbie to this forum, but thought it was time to get involved. I have been following the Fast 800 book for the last week and I am 8lb down after week 1 with 8 cm lost from my waist and 5cm from my hips! Starting weight was 14 stone 6lb.

I can already feel that week 2 is going to be a struggle. I have felt very hungry the last few days and my husband has suggested going out for breakfast tomorrow to Dishoom. I really struggle to have 'cheat' meals and would rather stay on plan 100% but I also still want to be social and know it's not realistic to stick to the plan 100% all the time. This is always my problem!

I am doing no exercise at the moment (except light walking) as I am recovering from surgery, but I always find I lose weight much easier with diet alone rather than diet and exercise (exercising makes me eat more).

Smile

Hi this year!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/01/2019 09:32

Morning everyone! Resisted temptation to step on the scales for a midweek weigh in, I will wait until Wednesday! Hoping for a good day today, food is planned (soup for lunch and roast chicken with roasted med veg for dinner) but unfortunately resolve is low....! Dh out playing football and I'm bored already. Working up the energy to sort a load of old clothes out and stick them on Facebook/Ebay but gah, I can't get up from my chair!!
