Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

Sorry to hear about your DD, West. Hope she starts to feel better soon.

TwoLads · 14/01/2019 07:21

PenelopeFlintstone yes, but since posting I've felt terrible! Woke up repeatedly through the night and have a very dodgy tum!

Oblomov19 · 14/01/2019 07:30

Hope your dd is better West.

I am seriously fucked off. Majorly pissed off. I've been trying for 2 weeks. I've lost 2.6 lbs. is that it? Is that all? FFS.

And Dry January. So where's my supposed weight loss from that?

Justanothergirl19 · 14/01/2019 08:55

Morning all, day 6 here. All good, 7lb down (though not quite as much as TwoLads, that is incredible!) feeling pretty good if not a little, erm, "bunged up".
Thrilled that I lost 0.5 visceral fat on my scales (from. 11.5 to 11, anything under 13 is good), plus 2% body fat.
Wishing you all a motivated and strong week.
P.S. West, bets wishes. Be very good to yourself right now, you clearly have something better to worry about right now x.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/01/2019 09:12

Morning all. some good results, well done two and just!

Oblomov 2.5lbs is great, don't be so hard on yourself. It's always going to be slower for us that have been low carb for a long time and especially for you with your insulin. What's your plan for this week?

I'm up to 10.1.5 which is completely expected as my loss last week was excessive due to my illness. So I'm happy with that even though it's a gain. I'm really going to be good this week, I promise, scouts honour so I've started the day with a pint of water and a 5km run.

Good luck everyone!

That photo!

Oblomov. You’ve lost two and a half of those piles. I think that is pretty great actually.

Forgot to weigh before I got dressed and obviously I can’t weigh then, I need all the help I can get. My coat feels looser though...will definitely weigh in the morning. Spinach, mushrooms and poached eggs for brunch.

MelanieCheeks · 14/01/2019 09:46

Morning everybody! Going into Week 2 for me, and I'm feeling strong and positive.

Foodwise, this is the sort of meals I'd choose to make for myself anyway, so it's not a hardship. What has surprised me is how frequently DH has been having the same as me - he's a very fussy eater, but has loved the tasty chilli garlicky concoctions I've produced.

My downfall is alcohol and crisps, so I'm being realistic and keeping them to weekend treats, and just the one glass

Scales are showing a downward trend - it's very hard to measure accurately, and weight fluctuates so much, so I try not to get too precise with actual losses, but I reckon I'm down at least 1 pound, and I'll happily take that.

Off to write up this weeks menu plan, which will feature a chickpea chilli and coq au vin, both from the book.

Shoobydooby09 · 14/01/2019 12:23

Ok complete newby here and I admit to not having read the whole thread(s) please don't judge !! So I have about 2 stone to lose to bring me into healthy weight category. Ideally I would like to lose some of this before my holiday in the summer. Im not diabetic or pre diabetic. I'm currently weighing up my options as to what plan to follow and was considering the new fast 800 or the classic 5:2,maybe a mixture of both, I'm a bit confused at the minute. But my question is really I have seen a recipe book for the BSD, and just wondered if these recipes would be ok on either of the other plans. I'm an OK cook if I have something to follow, and knowing what foods to eat. I'm not great at thinking of things myself. Thanks.

Gymntonic · 14/01/2019 12:37

Sorry to read about your daughter west . Hope she continues to mend and you all continue to get over the shock.
Four pounds down on last Monday and back to pre Christmas weight.
Couldn't sleep last night so succumbed to a cup of hot oat milk with cinnamon and half a banana. Off like a switch. Gotta love those carbs😁.
Got brunches sorted but need to plan and shop for dinners

Gymntonic · 14/01/2019 12:51

Hello snooby. Yes I think the recipes generally use the same principles of Mediterranean diet but fat and fibre levels higher in 800. Fast800 uses more current science too as it's a newer book.

For what it's worth, if you find yourself comfort eating or eating when you're not hungry - any level of food addiction if you like- then I found it easy to overeat on the non fast days of 5:2 and the fast days made me anxious. I'm finding 800 easier because it's the same rules every day. And it's low enough carb for me to not feel hungry and therefore not to think about food. Although I do go over 800 calories ( up to 1100 probably) if I'm hungry , by eating another "approved foods" mini meal. Otherwise I know I'll find myself craving carbs. I am quite active atm and use MFP to track calories.
You can also combine 800 days in a 5:2 pattern I think - the book has details - although maybe more as maintenance programme.

Justanothergirl19 · 14/01/2019 13:34

Phew, I thought that was your lunch Bear!

Justanothergirl19 · 14/01/2019 13:39

Welcome, Shooby! I totally agree with feeling anxious on the 5:2, either about the 800 day coming up ("will I starve all day and feel ill?") or about overeating on the 5 days and undo all the good work the fast did. I did 5:2 for a long time last year (on 500kcal though) and had some very good results, however, like Oblomov, I find the sameness of the day easier to plan for and for peace of mind.
Good luck with whichever root you take.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/01/2019 18:13

I definitely find it easier to do lower cal every day rather than 5:2, I've too voracious An appetite to be allowed to eat what I want! What you say rings true gym as in if you eat emotionally, when you're not hungry, then the normal 'off switch' doesn't seem to work, at least for me.

I also find I struggle to sleep especially when my period is due and also when I've had a very low carb day. It's like my metabolism is faster somehow. I also often come downstairs for a cup of milk, I also use Pukka nighttime teas as well sometimes.

I've had a really good day today food wise, plus loads of steps- just going to tot them up now. I put off eating as long as possible, which does seem to really help. The chicken lentil and coconut curry was really nice, I cooked the chicken separately so I have kept a portion of the sauce to eat later, it's a bit like a Dahl.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/01/2019 18:23

Kitchen Closing on 1031 cals, 63g carbs. I've done 21k steps, 5.5 k was a run.

I'm actually a bit surprised that the cals/carbs were that high as I basically only ate one meal and a latte today! Although they are guesstimated (eg divided the dish up but not weighed etc) and maybe over judged on the tracking- better to be on the safe side!

OP posts:
TwoLads · 14/01/2019 19:28

Excellent work Bear! I haven't done any exercise at all. I think I need to lose a few stone first.

I slept terribly last night - waking up every half hour. Previous three nights I slept 11 hours. Don't know what's up with me.

I was planning on going down to just two days a week but feel similarly to you guys I think. Plan to do it as much as possible for as long as poss. But I'll definitely break for a night out and few drinks soon!

My kitchen is closed too - 869 cals. A skinny mocha (I know, sugar) and I made two recipes from the first blood sugar book - the crustless quiche thing (delicious!) and the bacon, broccoli and mushroom fry up.

(It's TL btw - just done a name change)

TwoLads · 14/01/2019 19:29

Oh doh it didn't change! 😁

Thanks for all your replied / advice, I think I will invest in the recipe book too and give it a go. Fingers crossed.

PenelopeFlintstone · 14/01/2019 23:30

Hey All, this isn't since the other day when I last posted as you may have noticed my dieting is a bit erratic (carbonara on the first night????) , but I just checked on My Fitness Pal and it says I've lost 7lbs since December 16th. I think I've lost 3lbs this week but maybe hormonal fluctuations. Regardless, I'm happy. Smile

PresidentHump · 15/01/2019 11:41

Morning all. Any suggestions of what to eat on a dodgy tummy? I'd usually stick to toast and maybe some plain biscuits but don't want to bust the diet despite being a bit poorly

thenewaveragebear1983 · 15/01/2019 12:36

President I had the Norovirus last week and I existed on flat Diet Coke for 24 hours unfortunately. I couldn't face anything dairy or meat.

OP posts:
Justanothergirl19 · 15/01/2019 13:12

President, my unqualified advice would be to stick to very plain food (if you can stomach it), perhaps scrambled eggs and some toast or some boiled rice and a few greens. If you are poorly I would focus on that for now, any weight loss will happen anyway with a dodgy tummy. Also hot drinks like chamomile tea or miso is quite nourishing. Wish you better soon x

PresidentHump · 15/01/2019 13:49

Thank you both.

Lost three and a half pounds and I am happy with that as I haven’t got loads to lose. I’m on holiday next month and I would love to be in the nines for that even if it’s 9’13 and three quarters Grin.

Around 900 calories today and 14,611 steps so not too bad. Back on to 800 on the dot and will try to fit in a 5km run tomorrow.
