Thanks for the welcomes. Well done on the losses. I'm not brave enough to hop on the scales just yet, but I have begun in earnest. I was never any good at sticking to the 800 cals, but the very low (less than 50g) carbs made a massive difference. I still don't eat too many of them, but have a sneaking suspicion it will be much harder this time around. So may have to do better on cals.

I think chocegg asked about reset. I find a good incentive is when a perfectly lovely picture has been taken and all I can see is my large bum taking it over Grin

Westwing1 · 16/08/2018 11:29

Well done Amazing, back on track. Round do take some measurements if you can't face weighing. I found after a few weeks I was scrabbling around looking for the piece of paper I had written my starting stats on, it's so satisfying to see the numbers change. Or download a simple (free) weight tracking app. Have a good day everyone. Pouring rain here.

I am trying to keep extremely busy mostly by forcing DH to do DIY jobs he has been putting off for years

ponygirlcurtis · 16/08/2018 17:51

Junk that's an amazing amount, well done. I second the idea of sticking to low-carb but with a calories increase.

Still not back to anywhere near 800 calories but much lower than it was, and lots of water. I think I will do some batch cooking at the weekend to set me up for next week.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/08/2018 18:51

Today’s ended up as a bit of an impromptu day off, as Dh has invited people round for dinner and is cooking (the dish itself is quite BSD friendly actually, I’ll post the recipe on the recipe thread) but there is cheesecake and wine.

Ran 8km and had a busy day doing jobs to hopefully offset tonight! It’s been nice with Dh being off but I’ll be white glad when he goes back to work on Monday and we can return to normal. The dc are away Monday - Thursday next week so I know I can have a really focussed few days abc lots of exercise and sleep! Now my holiday gain is gone I’m not too concerned.

704 calories and 36.4g carbs today.

veryveryquietly · 16/08/2018 20:24

Decent day today: 963 cals and 43 gr carbs. Mostly excellent eating (salad with roasted salmon for lunch, grilled beef salad for dinner) ... except for a Magnum. Whoopsie! Still, pretty good.

Have friends in town tomorrow night and Sat, but am looking forward to a better work schedule next week and that means more flexibility to go to the gym!

Despite being stable for a week and having some not good days, have had a good week in that I tried a bunch of last year's autumn clothes on and they are all much too big. I'm not going to do a massive replacement shop as I still want to dump a lot more weight, but I have bought a few new things to greet the crispy weather.

ChocEggNoThanks · 16/08/2018 20:54

I had pasta and Pringles for dinner. Getting cross at myself now. Think I need a stern word with myself over the weekend, followed by a meal planning session and a big shop for healthy non carby stuff.

waterandlemonjuice · 16/08/2018 21:45

junkmail once my 8 weeks BSD is up I'm going for the 5:2, which is 5 days low carb and 2 days a week 800 cals. It's also Michael Moseley

I'm looking forward to that, I think it should be fine. I've had no sugar for 3 weeks or something now.

Day 24 no alcohol. Reckon I was about 800 cal today and managed to go on the treadmill too.

DandelionAndBedrock · 16/08/2018 22:45

I’ve had a terrible day today. I managed two gym classes, but apart from that I’ve had a mopey morning in bed, a glass of fizz at lunch to try and cheer myself up (it didn’t) and I went out for a coffee and a brownie. It was conscious sabotage, I didn’t do it on impulse, but considered it for over an hour and decided some quiet time with my book and a cake would help. It’s the first time I’ve tried to regulate my emotions with food since April, and it didn’t work. So I’m still glum, and feeling guilty. But I didn’t go and buy cake as soon as I thought about it, so I am proud of that if nothing else.

Hi all

Does anyone know about Low GI diets?

My 9 year old DS has just been diagnosed with Hypophalamic obesity- he has damage to his hypothalamus due to a nearby tumour. He gains weight at roughly 2kg a month even though we've tried reducing food etc so hence the diagnosis.

It's been recommended that we start a Low GI diet but I'm struggling to find an easy to use guide! How do I calculate if something is Low GI? Anyone able to help?

Thanks

Westwing1 · 16/08/2018 23:02

Hi, dontknowwhattodo80, sorry about your DS, my DH tried a low GI diet a few years ago (can't remember why and he didn't do it for long) and had books by Patrick Holford, that's all I know I'm afraid.

Day 11 no alcohol, scrambled eggs for lunch, chicken and green veg for dinner. Out for family birthday dinner tomorrow night, will try and save my 800 calories for that meal.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/08/2018 00:39

Don’t know I don’t know much about GI but i know a bit- each food has a GI rating which relates to its absorption in your digestive system. It’s to do with how quickly sugar (glucose) is absorbed. Also look at GL (glycemic load) - related to how much glucose is in there (portion size). If I was following a low GI diet I would be avoiding easily absorbed carbs such as potatoes, sugar, breakfast cereals, bread, pasta, rice, flour, plus avoiding foods with a high GL, so avoiding large quantities of ‘mid range’ carbs such as carrots, squash, corn, wholemeal products etc.

As this is related to a medical condition and not a weight loss plan per se, I’d seek alternative and professional advice to be honest before you change your son’s diet.

Hope you are ok, please feel free to post on here in the meantime Flowers

Morning all,
Don’tknow I’d had rather too many glasses of wine when I posted last night, but hopefully my response was coherent. I have definitely read about this condition in one of the books, it might be in the clever guts book. I’ll see if I can find it later and let you know.

Pleasant evening last night but I ate and drank far too much for a Thursday night, and now it’s the weekend which inevitably means more food and wine! I’m thoroughly looking forward to getting out of holiday mode on Monday, night out myself on something of a boot camp style ass kicking regime! Although even as I write I’m remembering that at least one of those days I’m out at the theatre and taking dd for a meal!!

Well done to everyone who is winning right now, and sympathy for everyone who is struggling. It’s so hard to get back into it sometimes and I don’t really have much advice except to hang in there because suddenly one day it always just clicks back into place.

Have a great day everyone

Don’tknow me again! There is some mention of the hypothalamus in the clever guts book which depending on your current position of understanding/knowledge might be a good starting point? I think Rather than low GI the advice might lean towards eating foods that decrease sensitivity to Leptin and ghrelin (2 hormones that regulate appetite). Ghrelin makes you hungry, leptin tells you when you’re full- and the condition your Ds has (I think) means that he doesn’t regulate this properly meaning he is especially hungry all the time? Anyone can have a milder form of this whereby they are leptin resistant so don’t get the ‘off switch’ message. The CG book might give you some ideas of how to boost his gut bacteria to become more sensitive to leptin and not produce so much ghrelin, and foods to eat in order to do this, but that would all be dependent on how much function your ds’s hypothalamus has.
This plan and it’s basic principles can have the effect of reducing ghrelin and improving leptin sensitivity, and almost certainly by removing quickly digested carbs and sugars it helps to balance out appetite in people with ‘normal’ function, so cannot hurt I suppose, and many foods you might have to increase leptin sensitivity are low GI/GL so I can see why they have pointed you in that direction- but be careful because for example things with artificial sweeteners might be low GI but they would damage the gut bacteria and affect ghrelin/leptin sensitivity.

Thanks everyone Smile

Posted too soon!

We're under a Endocrine team inc a dietician and I'm awaiting some info through the post. Just feels a bit overwhelming at the moment Sad

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/08/2018 20:32

Gosh I can imagine, it must be very hard as obviously being overweight is one thing, but being overweight with very little to nothing you can do about it is another. How old is Ds?

I’ve had another off plan day, deliberate (as in, I decided today was the last supper) but I cannot wait to get back into being healthy from tomorrow. Dh’s holiday has gone on forever it seems and I feel so groggy and overfed and yucky. Too much bread, too much sugar, far far too much alcohol. It had made me realise how I can never return to eating like this full time, it’s so gross, I feel like a slug.

Tomorrow I’m going to fast, I’m going to eat light meals and go for a bloody long run. I feel like I need a day sipping iced sparkling water and lemon and cleanse myself a bit.

Can't add anything to the fantastic info from bear, except to add that I am sure there was a TV programme (Doctor in the House maybe, on BBC?) in the last year or so that featured a young lad who was struggling to lose weight despite trying - tests identified a gut bacteria issue and sorting that out did help. Might be worth a look.

That looks delicious Amazing. Bit of a weird one here, went out for wonderful meal in seafood restaurant, not difficult to stick to BSD principles. We had a lovely evening, even the picky eater in the family ate well. However, I did have 4 glasses of champagne and a dessert wine, very late night. Woke up hung over and expected scales to swing in the wrong direction but strangely I still lost a little weight. I am probably dehydrated, can't face food or coffee yet. Back on the straight and narrow today.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 18/08/2018 14:19

I'll add the recipe to the thread. I had them with hummus and cherry tomatoes - 324 cals, 26g carbs for the whole lot. The bites are 62 cal and 5 carbs each. They were very satisfying.

TheAmazingShrinkingWoman · 18/08/2018 20:40

Closing the kitchen on 866 cal, 47g carbs. Really pleased with myself! Round to brother in law's for a roast tomorrow. Hoping his DH still low carbing.
